zoberg Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Last night, I dreamt that I was checking my Facebook and I received a message from the University of Wisconsin. In the message, they had written, You are rejected. in blue font and everything. I dreamt I was denied admittance by Madison via Facebook. How lame is that? Have you had any admission-related dreams, now that grad school is on your mind so often?
mm_donuts Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I had a dream a few weeks ago that I received a letter from Harvard that said only one thing, in the center of the page: REJECTED I didn't even apply to Harvard!!!
burntcheezits Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I've had multiple. Two of them were about getting emails of acceptance, and for one I actually received something in the mail. They've all been acceptances I've been dreaming about though.....I guess that makes me an optimist? The only problem is the dreams are so realistic that when I wake up in the morning and realize it didn't really happen, it's extremely disappointing Thanks for posting this though...I was hoping I wasn't the only one this has been happening to!
socialpsych Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Yeah. For sure. Ages ago I had a dream that my top choice program wasn't accepting anybody this year. Fortunately not reflected in reality...I got in!
rocket_queen Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I have had two dreams. One was just hearing from people that CUNY was sending out emails to people and that if I did not get an email, then it meant I was rejected. And I was rejected from CUNY, but they sent it through the post 2 days after I had the dream. And I had a dream just last night about Amherst accepting me with funding. So, who knows? But yes, this bizarre process has invaded my dream world and I don't like it!
schr Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Multiple dreams, all about acceptances. Very vivid. Waking up was absolutely heartbreaking. It's nice to know I'm not the only one.
nandelle Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Haha yeah, I had a dream the other night that I was rejected from one of my schools...and I wrote to them and asked why, and they told me one of my letter of recommendation writers had written that although I was smart, I was a very nasty person who mocked him and his class, and he felt I would be trouble for their program (note - I have nothing but respect for this prof and never said bad things about him/his class...i liked it quite a bit). I woke up in a cold sweat and it took a few minutes to realize that this was a dream and not reality. Then I had to go back and read all previous correspondence with said prof to reassure myself that he had, in fact, written me a positive LOR.
OnceAndFutureGrad Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I had a dream about three weeks ago that I was accepted to Harvard without funding, Notre Dame with full funding, and Cornell with partial funding. So then I had to decide whether to go to Ithaca, NY (4 hours' drive away) or Indiana (something like 20 hours' drive away, so likely needing airfare/shipping). Not an easy conundrum but certainly more pleasant that the present reality. Still praying for Cornell...
sundv004 Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Yes, I actually dreamt that I was accepted by the University of Idaho. I don't even know if there is a University of Idaho, although I am guessing there probably is (which is to say that I obviously did not apply to the University of Idaho). In my dream one of my professors congratulated me; but, needless to say, I was not very enthused.
MDLee Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I had a dream a few weeks ago that I received a letter from Harvard that said only one thing, in the center of the page: REJECTED I didn't even apply to Harvard!!! ::giggle:: that sounds exactly like my dreams lately. Lots of big "REJECT" letters from schools I didn't even know existed. And I woke up in a cold sweat three nights in a row with the same dream that none of my materials had made it to the schools I was applying for...and that none of them were going to tell me because they all thought it was funny... it was baddddd.....
Emilee Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 I haven't have any acceptance or rejection dreams. But the process is doing some strange things to me. Last week I dreamed that I was opening a restaurant with an aunt who has been DEAD for several years. Then I woke up yesterday and could not remember where I was for five minutes, before I realized I was in my own apartment where I have lived for two years?????? This process is brutal. Maybe I should quit trying to get into a PHD program and open a restaurant like my dead aunt suggested.

biodork Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I had a funny dream a few weeks ago. In the dream, I got a letter from MIT, and a package from Harvard. I opened the package first, which contained a tee shirt with a large cat on it, which said in big bold letters across the front "YOU'VE BEEN REJECTED BY HARVARD." In the MIT envelope was an acceptance letter. I thought the whole thing was very funny while dreaming it. In reality, MIT rejected me. Still waiting on Harvard.
MDLee Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 In reality, MIT rejected me. Still waiting on Harvard. So maybe this is a backward prediction of the future?
lauraeli Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I used to have dreams about being rejected (the rejection letters came straight to the door of my bedroom, and were comically oversized...the envelopes must have been a foot wide) but since I discovered this forum a few days ago, I've stopped dreaming completely. Mostly because instead of sleeping, I sit and click refresh while looking at the new posts and results pages here all night. If there's nothing new, I'll go refresh my email page a few dozen times, then come back. I know I'm going to hear from schools this week... and now that this week is finally here the waiting is killing me! Also, I think I'm going to be hearing back from my reach schools this week, so I have a good chance of being disappointed. My safeties won't get back to me for another month or so!!
whateverneveram3n Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I had a dream two nights ago where I was asked for a phone interview at one of my still-waiting-to-hear-from-schools (my first choice in real-life). The interview went ok and the dude on the phone was nice, but then I spent the rest of the dream worrying if I had done ok, if I should've expressed my interested in the program better, etc. The dream ended before I found out anything. I don't like that this is starting to percolate into my dreams, either. I thought I was going to be so much cooler about this than I'm finding... :|

sparkle456 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 This is a relevant post for me too! I had a dream last night that the prof I interviewed w/at Brandeis called me. The words in the voice mail were showing up as text. It said that there was a woman, whose name now of course I can't remember...had declined her admission so that opened a spot for me. So, I was waitlisted in this dream. I woke up thanking her...it was a name that started with a "P"
melancholyway Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 This last week I had a dream about receiving an invitation to interview in person for a school that is very much at the top of my list. I carefully prepared for the interview and eventually the committee sent a plane to pick me up. I was taken to some desolate island in the middle of no where with only a large castle occupying the land. I walked inside and was escorted to a room where three professors were waiting for me. While I was being seated one of the professors pulled out a large folder with the words "top secret" in bold print across the cover. She opened the file to reveal three separate files each for a different person. The committee told me that they were very interested in me as a potential candidate, but first they needed to know that I was truly devoted to the idea of being a graduate student and future professor. Then they explained to me that the three pictures and files belonged to three other applicants for the program. To gain admittance I needed to kill one of them. I declined their offer and woke up. I am glad to hear that I am not the only one having such strange dreams. I had a good laugh once I remembered all that had transpired in the dream.

It does help to have one acceptance in hand though  Congrats on Brandeis.
psycholinguist Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 At some point I had a dream about a very weird visit to the University of Toronto linguistics-department. It was one big long narrow room in an irregularly-shaped office-building in the centre of Toronto, with cubicles placed haphazardly all over it. I was looking for one potential advisor and got sent around the same corner about four times trying to find her office. I don't think I ever succeeded, either.
TulipOHare Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I know I've had dreams about it, but my dreams are usually very incoherent and hard to remember. Then they explained to me that the three pictures and files belonged to three other applicants for the program. To gain admittance I needed to kill one of them. I love it. You're a good person for not asking them "If I kill all three, do I get full funding?"
lauraeli Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 It does help to have one acceptance in hand though  Congrats on Brandeis. Thanks so much- I don't think i'll be having anymore oversized rejection letter dreams!!
nandelle Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I had a dream about this forum last night! I dreamed that I checked my status at one of the schools and it had switched to "Decision Made" but with no other information, so I posted on here to ask what you guys thought and the consensus was that I was probably rejected, b/c if it had been an admit, I would have received an e-mail/phone call or something. I am just ready for this to be over...and trying not to remember that for my undergrad, it was beginning of May before I heard back from McGill...
