JeremiahParadise Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Hi, all: Today, I received an email from a program that asked me to pass along my official GRE scores ASAP. At first, I was afraid I'd just forgotten to submit them. Later, I checked the university's website and was able to confirm that the department requires only the unofficial GREs until offering admission. Now, here is the part where you chime in and tell me whether or not this seems significant to you. Feel free to be frank! This is the fun part of the game -- what do you say? Am I fool to believe that this might somehow be a significant email? Am I foolish to think that they maybe are interested in me because (1) they didn't throw away my application; (2) the department took the time to follow up with me about what most think is a pretty small part of the app; and (3) their damn website says they can't offer admission without the official scores but they're otherwise cool without 'em?? Phew -- well, what do you say? ------ Other folks, have you had anything similar happen? Do you want to know whether or not other gradcaf-ers think that something is meaningless or not? Let's GO. I think we could all use another distraction OctaviaButlerfan and JeremiahParadise 2
asleepawake Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 is the e-mail from the department, the graduate college, or the University?

JeremiahParadise Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 is the e-mail from the department, the graduate college, or the University? It came from the department's administrative coordinator.
asleepawake Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 It is either completely neutral or good. I'd read it as neutral.
JeremiahParadise Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 It is either completely neutral or good. I'd read it as neutral. That's what I'm thinking, really. I guess it's just hard not to fantasize at this point in the game.
Two Espressos Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I read the topic title and expected a game where people list someone or something--presumably literature-related-- and others opine on whether or not they think it is significant. I clicked on the link, thinking "ooh, this is going to start lots of arguments," and was seriously disappointed when I started reading the actual thread. Anyways, I don't really know what to make of your email. I'll follow precedent and go with "neutral." sebastiansteddy, sugarmilk, HHEoS and 1 other 4

Maybe you should start that thread anyway and glory in the bloodbath! And OP, I'm gonna go with neutral on that, too.

iExcelAtMicrosoftPuns Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 It's negative... just trying to be different. alright fine, neuter. JeremiahParadise 1

And OP, I'm gonna go with neutral on that, too. Haha, I think what made me think that is the "let's play a game" part: if it had just read "is it significant?" or something of the sort, I don't think I would have reached the same conclusion. And I'm ambivalent about such a thread. It would certainly be a bloodbath, though.
asleepawake Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I have now gotten 3 total e-mails titled "Important information about your Duke Application!!!!!!!!!" Ok, there are no exclamation points, but that is how I read it anyway. OctaviaButlerfan and JeremiahParadise 2
bluecheese Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 (edited) I think it is probably neutral or positive. There is a good chance that it is positive though. If they were simply going to through out your application they may not have bothered to ask for the scores. You have that going for you. I found out similar news because I had a tardy recommender. I received an email from a grad student at one of my top choices that said "I can't forward your application to the next round unless we have all three of your recommendations." So, I at least made it past the first cut. I'll probably still get rejected, but it provided a (much needed) morale boost. Edited January 11, 2013 by bluecheese

DontHate Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Allow me to play as well: Most of my friendships with men tend to be more emotionally distant than my friendships with women. Is it significant? Does its significance have to do with gender dynamics, or just with me? DontHate, bfat and isawnewton 2 1
