Ok, maybe he's not terrible, but he's far more interesting as a politician than he is as a poet.

Sorry that I'm not more philological, rsmease :P.

Yeah, I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone say they wished there were more philologists in the room. But maybe that's because I don't hang out with enough non-historians?

(Don't get offended: some of my best friends are philologists!)

In my opinion, the best ancient historians are also philologists, so I certainly have nothing against philology.  For me and my interests, though, it's a means to an end and not an end in itself.

Depends on what you're after I guess, plus what you're calling Philology, there tends to be a difference between the UK, Greece, Europa Propria and the US from what I've seen, not to mention the new world in general. I mean Greece has a very wide remit for philology in that its language based criticism, the UK has a division between hard line philology (historical/comp) and proper work with Greek and Latin texts e.g epigraphy, textual etc rather than just literary. Very few people here seem to deem themselves philologists. Basically you'd expect them to have the typical skills, but also some auxiliary languages and dialects too. This is why I tend to prefer the term Classicists. I also dislike the typical Oxonian "Literae Humaniores" since its kinda chauvinistic.

I don't mean to say that ancient historians shouldn't have strong language skills, hanbran.  That's definitely not true!  I think I'm just tired of being surrounded by people who work on literature.  Sorry for not being clearer!

I understand. Most of my comrades completely ignore the historical backgrounds of ancient literature, which leads to some incredibly inaccurate opinions (to my great annoyance :P ).

Seems I'm in the opposite boat. There are pretty much no lit people in my undergrad program right now. The Program in Classical Studies offers two degrees, one in Classical Studies (some language but mostly history and humanities courses) and another in Classics (mostly lang/ lit). I don't think we currently have any Classics majors in the program... and a lot of the Classical Studies students are jumping ship over to History, sadly.

Edit: Also, interview-related question! I'm freaking out a little bit. The director of IPCAA is going to be contacting me via telephone this weekend, ahead of my attendance at their recruitment weekend in March. I am not really sure what I should say! I feel like I should avoid sounding over-eager but I also have no idea what he's going to ask me, or what he's going to expect me to ask. I suppose it's much too early to be asking about funding... and that's a bit of a silly question anyway, since I know IPCAA students are well-funded. Do I stick to talking about the recruitment weekend and then ask my more important questions at that time? Help!

I interviewed with IPGRH, so if you want to talk about what they asked in specific (not IPCAA but kind of close), feel free to message me.  You're in rather a different situation, though, so I'm not sure how much help I'd be.

I interviewed with a history department last month, and they asked me what I was currently researchng, what I would like to work on if admitted, why I applied to that particular school, what I was looking for in a department, and what books/classes/historians have been most influential in shaping my interests. I asked about funding (it never hurts to ask), job placement rates, predictions/plans for departmental development and changes, and what made their department a great place to study. My interviewer seemed to like those questions. Well, he didn't seem to be offended, at least.

I just read some of Solon's poetry. My God, he's a terrible poet.
I wouldn't say terrible, his Greek verse greatly outshines mine. I do agree that he is much more interesting as a political figure.

He reuses phrases and he transitions poorly and often quite suddenly into new thoughts, but not in a charming way.

Hello all! New here. Is anyone else out there attending the Berkeley prospectives weekend this March, or done so in the past? If so, do you know if international airfare will be reimbursed?

I would expect so, but you've scared me a bit--has Berkeley sent out their admits? No one's reported this, and you have the odd feature of being marked as a 'spring 2013' applicant, which confuses me. Do tell.

Sorry, I am applying for Fall 2013. I must've selected in error.  I have heard from Berkeley, but I don't know if the other programs (Archaeology, Joint Program in Philosophy) have sent out their admits, or even if all the admits have gone out (I think that the  university vs. departmental funding decisions at Berkeley in particular stretches out their notification period).  Good Luck!

Wow, lots of new results! Who got invited to recruitment weekend at Ann Arbor for Classical Studies? I wonder if it's the same weekend as IPCAA! Might see you there if it is!

Has anyone heard anything back from Stanford Classics?

Word on the street [read: department gossip] is that no one has heard back formally.

And congratulations to everyone who's gotten good news lately!

I am not the poster, but I am attending the Michigan Classical Studies recruitment weekend.  It's at the same time as IPCAA (and IPGRH), so I'll see you there!

Thanks for the reply.

I saw on the results board that Harvard has already sent out interview offers, and I haven't received one. So I guess I can take Harvard off my list. :P
