Fockatar Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Pretty distraught any Classical suggestions for consolation?
hanbran Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 Well, you could go watch a few ship wrecks. That's what Lucretius would do. Conscia Fati 1
hanbran Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 How should I dress for a recruitment weekend? (I'm a man.)
kaloskagathos Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) Business casual, I think. (I would offer more advice re: details of what that means, but I'm a woman and, uh, frankly I relied on googling + friends' sartorial savvy.) Where're you headed? Edited February 8, 2013 by kaloskagathos
kaloskagathos Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Exciting! (Just scoping out to see if I'll be seeing any of you lot soon.)
ciistai Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 I'd better fetch my blazers from my parents' house before I head down to Ann Arbor then! I was wondering the same thing haha
kaloskagathos Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) I think "recruitment weekend" is the hardest of the possible events to decipher the dress code for. And don't forget to bring something more casual in case you have to go out with current students. Edited February 8, 2013 by kaloskagathos
hanbran Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 I'm...awkward in suits (I'm sort of short,) so I guess I'll rock a nice sweater and tie?
kaloskagathos Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Yes, that's exactly what you'll want to wear. A suit is too much, I think. We're not business students.
hanbran Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 Has anyone heard from UNC? I was sure that there would have been a few UNC results up by now.
ciistai Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Anyone else snowed in or has the storm not hit the American northeast too badly yet? People have been snowshoe-ing, cross-country skiing, and dog-sledding through the streets of Toronto today. My university cancelled all of the day's activities and classes, and the stairs leading down to my basement apartment looks more like a great hill for tobogganing... Conscia Fati 1
hanbran Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 We got some bad rain here, but I'm somewhat south and inland.
hanbran Posted February 10, 2013 Author Posted February 10, 2013 So, I've been trying to think of fun things to say during visits and interviews, particularly to overturn an embarrassing situation (e.g. "No, I'm not familiar with that book/scholar/theory.") So far, I've got: "γηράσκω δ᾽ αἰεὶ πολλὰ διδασκόμενος." (Sorry for the hyperlink; I didn't feel like typing out the Greek ). Anyone have anything good?
ciistai Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 That's a good one ahaha! I'm planned to brainstorm things to say in those situations but haven't gotten around to doing that just yet. I'm so nervous about my recruitment weekend! On the bright side I've already made contact with two others who are interviewing with IPCAA so it's nice to know people who will be there too (even if they're kind of the competition...)
hanbran Posted February 10, 2013 Author Posted February 10, 2013 It's a fascinating concept. Part interview, part visit, part personality test. I look at it as an opportunity to interact with like-minded scholars, whom I have not yet met. If I happen to get an offer of admission out of it, even better.

hanbran Posted February 12, 2013 Author Posted February 12, 2013 (Can't tell if season is over or has yet to really begin.)
ciistai Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 A very weird feeling - getting into a program you can't afford...
Seneca Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 It seems as though the University of Washington has sent out many results; has anybody else yet to receive a response from them?
ciistai Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 No funding? I've applied for funding at KCL, but haven't heard anything. Regardless, what I've applied for won't even cover a year's tuition in an MA program.
hanbran Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 Ouch. Well, in the modern world, one will always find oneself in debt for some reason...
