I'm more worried about missing an opportunity to speak with a professor than with a graduate student. I get the impression that visiting students will meet most of the current graduate students, or at least a sizeable portion.

The schools are going to arrange interviews in most cases. I wouldn't worry about missing the profs unless they're emeritus or on sabbatical.

Good luck to those of you who have interviews coming up! And my two cents: it doesn't really matter if you email grad students or not. If you have some questions or just want to get to know them a little beforehand, go for it!

Welp, given that the offers are out and I haven't got one, looks like I'm not into Harvard. So I guess I can/should spend some time away from my computer.

Based on the "Results Board," it seems like a rough season.  I think that a lot of departments are scaling back this year.

Ooh... first Oxford PhD result I've seen on the board... guess I should be hearing back for MPhil within a few weeks.

It does seem like everything's a bit wonky across the board in terms of people being notified. Not just in Classics; I have a friend in art history and she's experiencing the same thing.

Have any of you ever amused yourselves by cruising random threads on other results boards? I have a friend applying for PhD Art History and the drama that goes on over there is great comedic relief from the nervousness this website otherwise creates in me. ;)

I'm so glad someone else does that!  Lately, the Lit/Rhet/Comp applicants are just taking the cake for drama, although Art History was really excelling back in January.  Reading all the other Humanities boards makes me so grateful that Classics programs don't get 400-odd applications.  At least, we know our applications made it past the department secretary.

(Okay, I just checked out the latest shenanigans from the LRC people.  Wow.)

Oh dear, thinking I may have to run over there and check... in Art History recently there was a nasty post left on the Results Board by someone who'd been rejected by UNC. What a nasty attitude! I'm glad everyone in Classics has been lovely!!

You have to go back quite some pages in the "0% Confidence of Acceptance" thread, and it's pretty horrifying and results in someone actually getting banned, possibly for their posts in the thread and possibly for harassment.  That Art History tidbit does really make me glad that Classics has a very different attitude.

I'm always surprised by people who are shocked and outraged by a rejection.  Common sense dictates that each department can only admit and fund a small percentage of applicants each year.  Sure, it's quite sad and often depressing, but it really shouldn't cause offense or anger.

Thanks for staying classy, Classicists.

If anyone else has applied to Oxford, you might be hearing from them soon. At least for Classical Archaeology; I haven't heard back from the Faculty of Classics regarding my second application yet.

Am Oxford grad, anyway I can help? Also due to various specialist reasons Archaeology, whilst sharing a lot with the Classics dept proper, tends to be administered by Archaeology and Anthropology so that's the reason for the lapse. Offers from Classics might not be out yet since the last deadline (at least for UK funding) is the 18th of January.

Thank you for the offer of help! I'm actually not too concerned about my application to Faculty of Classics as I wasn't even expecting to hear from Arch this early (and I definitely wasn't expecting good news!). Just wanted to make a point of emphasizing that I'd heard back from one program and not the other since I thought it'd be more likely that others reading the Classics board would have applied to Classics and not Arch.

Still no news out of UT Austin, however. I might send them an email just to inquire about the status of my application. I suspect I've been rejected but I'd rather know for sure sooner rather than later. Although I shouldn't be complaining, I've had answers to 6 out of 9 applications!

4 rejections from Toronto today and I haven't heard...Good news?

Might be! Maybe they've been alerting those they've rejected first? Has anyone posted any acceptances to U of T?

So which Classics program is improperly pressuring students to make decisions before the April 15 deadline?

Here is the url for the resolution passed by the Council of Graduate Schools saying that students should not be forced to decide before April 15, with a list of CGS member institutions that indicated their support of the Resolution.

Speaking of deadlines - the difference in timelines between universities in different countries is really stressing me out right now...
