Btw, rsmease -- I took a look at the blog attached to your profile page. Amazing. I'm especially fond of the graham cracker/Nutella Trojan horse.

Woo!!

Also:

Happy Friday and Happy February!

Also:  (Maybe don't click if you're super squeamish or don't like bad tattoos.)

This link didn't work, but I wanted it to.

Thanks! It's offered me quite a ride over the last nine months. Mostly, I just dread having to face the two or three hyper-pedantic high school Latin teachers who read my posts very carefully and point out any and all typos.

And on another note - Cardiff has managed to lose an ELECTRONIC letter of recommendation from one of my referees. How?!?!?!!?!?!!

Because they're Welsh.

Joking aside Caerdydd is a great place for all the archaeological stuff, they really go for that, but I'm always impressed by how much the Cymry can drink! We had some students from there visiting Oxon a while back for a conference and I went out with a few of them - woah....suddenly everyone was nattering in Welsh and downing these snakebite thingies.

I... have an interview in Ann Arbor in March.

I can't even believe this.

Yay!!!!!  Congratulations!!!

Do you eat them once you've peeled them? :P

I cook a lot when I'm nervous so I've been throwing together some healthy, delicious concoctions when I'm taking a break from homework/ research. It helps!

I've been peeling grapefruits to distract myself.

Admittedly an odd hobby.

But a delicious one!

(Also, re Cornell: I do think that sometimes no news when other people get news can be good news.  Try not to worry too much.)

Nomothete, is your username a reference to the Cratylus? I'm doing my senior thesis on the Cratylus, as it happens.

I've been dreaming of the day when another non-historian would emerge from the shadows of the forum.

(edit: never mind, Bebutlittle does philology. My bad... :/ I have a cold, so you can't blame me. My friends and I are going to a French restaurant tonight and I plan to order nothing except this gourmet chicken noodle soup. I can't taste anything, anyway.)

Speaking of food, I hope you're all aware of this blog: http://pass-the-garum.blogspot.com/

What a fun blog! I've made placenta with the spelt flour a couple of times - once for the family, once for a Saturnalia party. I liked it quite a lot but it seems like the blogger had a less than pleasing experience and opted for filo instead! Still, the rest of the recipes look awesome and a few make me wish I had a functioning oven at my apartment :(

Placenta. Hehe. I'm sorry, I couldn't help but giggle a little. I'm guessing you meant polenta. :P

Nope, I meant placenta - that's with a hard C! :P Click the link rsmease pasted and you'll find a blog with ancient recipes. Placenta is a sort of dessert! Quite good - layers of dough, ricotta, and honey.

Ciistai, but of course. Kaloskagathos, thank you for the reassurance. rsmease, I was actually referring to Solon. I've been working on social history through the orators. I am indeed a fellow philologist, but not a philosopher.

Oh my goodness! I feel silly now. What a cool blog!

Don't feel silly; when I brought it to the Saturnalia party in 2011 a room full of Classicists wouldn't stop making jokes about it all evening! :P

I just read some of Solon's poetry. My God, he's a terrible poet.

Really? I think its great stuff.

Oh no, aesthetic discord.

Congrats to anyone who got in at uChicago and Penn.

Does anyone know if Penn releases all their acceptances at once, or if it's divided between the two graduate groups?

Also, if anyone has any questions about uChicago / Hyde Park / the department, I'd be happy to answer, whether here or in a PM. I've been here for four years, so I have plenty of opinions about the place.
