Congrats longfeb (I like your name) and hdsl!!

Still crickets for me...but hopefully something soon. Here's where I'm at:

I did not get an interview notification from SAIC, so just waiting for the rejection letter.

After completing my application, I received an email from RIT of their timeframe, which would put me hearing approx. the end of this week.

I recently spoke with someone from Columbia College and was told they do not interview for photo, notifications go out via snail mail and prob phone call, with an approx. timeframe of three weeks from now.

I'm expecting rejection from SAIC as well. maybe there is still hope since only two people from the forum have heard from them and they are both abroad.. however, with interviews coming up soon I highly doubt it. oh well! I wasn't set on SAIC anyways and I'm definitely grateful for my two acceptances so far. I hope you hear some good news from RIT this week!

i also received an out of the blue phone call from ucla and had a brief interview on tuesday night! i was a bit flustered and forgot to ask when we might hear back for the final verdict. any chance you asked?

Check your messages!

Thanks, emeliej! I have my fingers tightly crossed for RIT. I’m a bit disappointed about SAIC…I was feeling somewhat optimistic due to the feedback I received from them on portfolio day.

My concern is that the denial letter dated Feb 11, then why do they wait until today to send it

Hi everyone,

I just registered and I'm new to the forums. I've come seeking advice for MFA interviews and I saw this thread. Sounds like a lot of you are applying to the same places that I am. I have an interview at SAIC on Mar 2nd that I am flying in for and I am looking for advice (for Graduate interviews in general in relation to the arts, but specifically for SAIC would be nice.) I'm the first of my family to pursue a career in art, I just graduated with my BFA last year, and as you might expect my family doesn't have much advice to offer me when it comes to stuff like this.

I understand the the interview at SAIC is a bit like a "hang out with students of the program" for the day kind of thing. But what else can I expect to happen on my interview day?

  • What kind of attire or dress code is there for an interview? I don't expect that it is too formal (suit and tie) but I don't want to be under-dressed either. Would a nice collared shirt and nice pair of jeans be okay? E.G. Smart casual/Business casual. I kind of have an artist stereotype look going for me, but I don't want that to hinder my chances. I don't want to look like I slob or bum though.
  • I was told I should bring an additional portfolio of work. Since I am flying in I can't bring a lot of stuff, so I've brought my mini-magazine/artist book that I publish every month with new work/in progress work so I can talk about that. Do you think this would be okay to show them? Or should I just bring more work on a flash drive? I do feel that having a book to show would be more interesting than perhaps a slideshow on a projector.
  • The other problem I have is....is that I submitted a lot of different works in my portfolio. It shows that I have a variety of work, but what if they are only interested in a specific group of work that I have done? How do I know what work they are interested in seeing? Is it just a shot in the dark?
  • I saw someone post a list of questions typically asked in an interview. Does anyone have any additional resources in regards to questions I should be able answer?
  • If you've had an interview at SAIC or attended SAIC, any other advice you have to offer would be incredibly valuable to me.

Thanks everyone for your time. In time I hope to share my experience with you all.

Hey all,

I've applied to RISD, Cornell, Rutgers, University of Illinois-Chicago and University of Washington-Seattle.

So far I've been denied from UIC and no news other than that. Anyone else apply to University of Washington in Seattle?

I applied there too for Photomedia. I haven't heard back yet from them either. From the search results on here it looks like first week of March they send out results

I'm not a photographer, but my advice on the specific group of work to bring is that you should bring whatever is the strongest conceptually, esp. if you are able to verbalize that in the interview since they will most likely ask you about this.

congrats on your interview! I haven't heard anything at all from SAIC so I'm assuming rejection. anyways, I think you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in but maybe not too dressed up? I think the magazine sounds interesting! but maybe also bring a few prints from one series? I'd probably avoid flashdrive/projector since that's how they've already seen your work.. I'm sure they'd probably like to se physical work? note: I've never had an interview there so I'm just guessing! I would just call/email and ask if you are unsure.. I'm sure they get that all the time.

also, type in "interview" in the search bar. there is a tread with TONS of questions. I used those to prepare for my phone interview with one school and it really helped. however, they only asked the common questions (why grad school/why this school, tell me about your work, influences etc)

Thanks everyone for your time. In time I hope to share my experience with you all.

Congrats on your interview! I went to interview day last year so here are some thoughts:

  • wear something comfortable but presentable. i don't believe anyone male or female was in a suit. many women were wearing skirts/dresses, though i wore nice jeans and a sweater and felt totally comfortable with my choice(i am a woman). i feel like the attire ranged and was appropriate with each personality. collared shirt and jeans sounds totally fine.
  • if printing is an important aspect of your work you should definitely bring some prints. i'm sure they'd be interested in seeing your artist book too! a bunch of people last year brought books. i brought a selection of new work in print form. they had slideroom loaded and a projector set up. i just clicked through and talked about the work. i wouldn't bring new work in a digital format because it might be problematic setting it up esp since you have limited time. i can't remember how long exactly the interview was but i'm sure you could call the dept and ask, (15-30 min?).
  • since you say your work is in a lot of different places perhaps you should prepare to talk about the work that is most important to you and make sure you do that first. you could also ask which work the panel is most interested in knowing more about. know that you'll prob run out of time. i wish i had prepared for presenting my slideroom portfolio more concisely. I would have skipped over some things...
  • check the forum for interview question lists and definitely prepare answers to the most general common ones.
  • the interview was with 2 faculty members and 1 2nd year student. the day is filled with tours, an all school reception for perspectives and a Photo dept post party. I would suggest attending as many activities as possible. apparently the current grads have some say in the decision and it's good to show your interest in the school. it also gives you a sense of whether the school is right for YOU as you get to know the current students, other prospectives, facilities and faculty.

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!

Hi there, I read in the "All Art Admissions Freak Out Forum" that Columbia University extended interview invitations to printmaking and painting applicants. Have any photography applicants been invited to interview? Thanks!

Posted

I applied to both Columbia University and RISD for photo and I haven't heard anything. But I have noticed other applicants from other programs from both school are starting to get interviews and such, so I'm hoping for the best.
