For those that are needing pre-reqs, Utah State does a lot of the pre-reqs online and they are about $750-$775 per course (they charge the same no matter where you live so there is no in-state/out-of-state difference.  The classes are really good and the pricing is obviously quite reasonable.  I have taken 3 of my pre-reqs from them and they've all been great!  Also, they offer them ALL every term (so you could get a few in over the summer if you have time and need to for your upcoming graduate program!)

This is good info! I was looking at the USU website yesterday and couldn't quite figure out what classes were offered when. I'm going to go find out if it's too late to apply for the summer. That would be a good solution for me. Thank you!!!

And yes, kcald, the transcript thing is getting out of control!

I already have transcripts from the University of South Carolina (undergrad), University of South Carolina-Lancaster (during high school), Austin Community College (messing around/exploring/taking classes for fun), and UT Austin (more exploring, plus my prereqs)! If I throw USU into the mix, then do a master's program, I'll have six different schools to order transcripts from if/when I apply to PhD programs.  lol.

I applied to Adelphi and Hofstra as well. The suspense is definitely eating away at me (especially because yesterday someone posted that they were accepted to Adelphi on the results board..eek). I promise I will let you know if I hear from them lol haha. I also applied to LIU, but the Brooklyn campus. I was very impressed with Adelphi's Garden City campus- did you apply there or the Manhattan program?

Hey Hopefull!

I applied to their Garden City campus. I went to their Grad Open House and I could have swore I heard there that even if you apply to the Garden City campus, you may get accepted to the Manhattan program. I could be wrong though since I went to ALOT of grad open houses! I wouldn't mind being accepted to either program!! I noticed you have the certificate in Autism Disorders. I saw a program like that at Brooklyn College, I was thinking of going for it, do you think it's worth it?

Received my second rejection... kinda bummed.

Don't let that get you down!!! You have great stats and you also applied to many others! When one door closes, another opens  :)

I was under the impression that you had to pick which campus you wanted to apply to, but I could be wrong lol. It's funny that you mention Brooklyn College- that is where I am currently enrolled for the Grad Cert. in ASD! I love it and the professors are awesome, they really know there stuff! I would definitely go for it if ASD is something you are interested in! I also received my B.A. from Brooklyn College as well. If you have more questions about the program feel free to PM me!

Thanks so much! I know I have many more schools to hear from, but it still stings! I just need 1 acceptance....that's all I keep telling myself

Okay, thanks everyone - I just did the USU non-degree-seeking online application, and it was basically the easiest thing ever! No LORs, no statements, no transcripts - just filling in some info. Whew! Now I know I have another option in my back pocket if my current institution doesn't offer the last two prereqs I need this summer.

Yep - I'm waiting to hear back from the place that I think I need the last 2 classes, and if they don't have them available this summer, I'm going to try USU for those classes... hopefully we can both knock out those pre-reqs!! :-)

Blah someone else just posted that they were admitted via phone for UNC-CH. I'm about 90% I've been rejected now. Very disappointing.

Yay, we could be online classmates!

I am looking through USU's summer course offerings right now, and I'm only seeing Pediatric Aural Rehab.  I wonder whether most schools will count that for their aural rehab requirement?

They do have the language development class I need for all my schools, and the language science that I might need for University of Utah.  They also have the speech science class you need, as well an option that sounds like part of what you would said you'd need for UNCG - "Disorders of articulation/phonology".

Also, I noticed that the description for Language Science reads "Study of clinical analysis of syntactic and morphological properties of speech." That would satisfy your morphology/syntax prereq., I imagine.

This link lists the courses they offer for the non-degree seeking at USU:

Also, yes tuckerma- applying there is super easy - it's just basically "you are in!" haha.  But I guess that's because it's non-degree seeking.  So far I have taken Language Development, A&P of the Speech Mechanism there, and I am taking Speech Science this semester.  They do offer Aural Rehab (not just pediatric unless something has changed) and I was told by a couple schools that they had students who had taken it there and it counted.  You may want to check with your programs to be sure, but their classes are pretty legit!  They are pretty thorough and some are harder than others, but I feel like they are preparing me well for graduate school.  They definitely helped me knock out a few courses that weren't offered locally where I'm living now!

Good luck and if anyone has any specific questions about the USU stuff, feel free to ask me!

Hope we all get good news next week!!!

I'm just concerned that I won't be considered competitive anywhere. Only time will tell, I suppose.

I was looking at this "course finder" search page. I put in out-of-state, the department, and Summer 2013. https://rcde.usu.edu/coursefinder/  I think I did it correctly - there was a list of 32 distance ed courses. I'll look more closely later, but I'm about to go take the dogs on a little stress-relief hike.  :-)

Edit: not sure why my link doesn't seem to be working. Login issues, maybe? It's the course finder mentioned in item #4 on this page: http://comd.usu.edu/htm/distance-education/online-bach/onlinebach-applying/nondegree/

I really think that as long as you meet schools' stated GPA/GRE minima (and it seems like more and more SLP programs do not hesitate to post those), and especially if your stats are close to the "average accepted student" profile, you're absolutely competitive, at least in the sense that you can guarantee the adcom will read your SOP, CV, and LORs and fully consider your app. (That's not to say that people who don't meet those guidelines are automatically out, but I do wonder how competitive schools go about narrowing down the applicants.)

Posted

I haven't seen as many GRE minima, just GRE averages.

I remember reading on UVA's site that they prefer 150 or higher on both sections; even so, their data on EdFind shows quite a range:

  • Average GRE:
  • Verbal Reasoning: 145-160
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 142-158
  • Analytical Writing: 3.50-4.50
  • Average GPA:
  • 3.55

If an applicant's stats are decent to good and don't raise a red flag, I truly think she will be fully considered.

I'm really confused as to why only one person posted an acceptance to Marquette... Aaahgjdjaha..

A whole slew of rejections went out on Thursday, and then a whole bunch of wait-lists went out on Friday... and at the end of the day, one person posted an acceptance!  I'm hoping that they are working methodically through the list and the rest will be acceptances... :)

Hi Everyone! Just posted on the older thread so thought I'd come to this one and send out a new message. I applied to:

MGH

Emerson

BU

Northeastern

UVM

Columbia

NYU

I've heard back from BU (didn't get the first interview so assuming I didn't get into that one), and I was rejected from NYU :( I am most certain that my GRE score is what did me in.  I am really hoping that one of the other remaining schools can see past my dismal Quant score!! Everything else on my GRE was decent, but my overall score was 301. Anyone else ready to pull their hair out and full of anxiety?!

Marquette is confusing me too...why not send out acceptances yet? There was nothing in my mailbox today, and anything from Milwaukee would get to me very quickly...

I applied to Northeastern, Columbia and NYU as well! I'm sorry to hear about your NYU rejection. Did you receive an email on Friday? I'm confused as to why so few people have heard back... I'm almost certain that this must mean either I've been rejected or waitlisted. It seems silly for a school to reject solely because of someone's Quant score though; I almost feel as if that's irrelevant in comparison to the other aspects of the application. I'm definitely with you on the anxiety... I just want to have ONE acceptance to ease my worries and help me focus on the my last semester of undergrad. I feel like every time I sit down to study, I end up getting so distracted by looking up grad school things!

Posted (edited)

I also agree that a quant score is silly to reject someone over: Most schools I applied to/looked at said they looked less at the quant portion, or required a lower score for that section.

Though I will say that different people have different ideas of a poor quant. score. Do you mind sharing what percentile you fell into?

Good luck, sroberts!

I know that the Northeastern schools are highly competitive (BU and MGH especially); if for whatever reason you don't get in somewhere this time, have you considered UMass Amherst, UNH, and UMaine?

Also do you think you could improve your quant score? I took the GRE twice; my first quant score was 490 (equivalent to 143). While you can see that my current quant score of 150 is nothing to write home about, I was able to make a significant improvement and feel a bit better about it.

Ooops, I meant to say thanks to SLPtoBEweee! Sorry, I wasn't paying attention. Saturday brain.

Sorry that this post is going to look really obnoxious. SLPtoBEweee (and any others with knowledge of USU's online program), this is the list of what's being offered online this summer from USU's Course Finder thing. It looks like COMD 5330 is just called "Aural Rehab" on the link you provided, but here they list it as "Pediatric Aural Rehab." I imagine it satisfies the aural rehab-related KASAs, but I'll ask my prospective schools.

the aural rehab course at USU is listed as having child AND adult according to their SLP program website... I would imagine that the online course listing search engine just hasn't been formally updated (which at some universities requires an act of congress).

I just applied / etc for USU pre-reqs to complete mine... and okay this is going to sound dumb, but I jumped into the SLP pre-reqs as quickly as possible last Summer because I knew that once I found my new dream (etc) I wanted to start immediately -- I'm kind of mad that I spent $1900 per class at Longwood when it could have been $700 or so at USU ... but oh well.  Hopefully USU will let me get my last couple of courses in.

And for anyone else doing pre-reqs --- I have spent HOURS upon HOURS looking for ANYONE who offered "observation hours" for university credit --- the USU program is the only one I have found that actually offers that.  This really changes the picture for me for my U of South Carolina application -- if I got in there, if I did NOT have the observation hours done, I would have to start on campus during Summer I, which means I have to quit my teaching job early ... ENTER KNIGHT ON WHITE HORSE ... just found the observation hours available at USU and I just emailed the coordinator at USC about updating my application to a provisional Fall entry as long as I provide transcripts of these completed classes.  AHHHH praying for pixie dust to make my application push through there... it's one of my TOP choices ... otherwise I would not have applied out of state at ALL!!!
