Hi guys! Quick question for University of Maryland applicants (past or present):

When did you submit your application? And if you've gotten a response back, how long did it take?

I only submitted my UMD application 3 weeks ago, so I'm not quite so impatient as to have expected a decision already. I'm just trying to gauge about how long this school takes, on average. The research I've done suggests they're on the slower side. And it has me a bit worried, because I'll need to let me other schools know whether I'm attending by April 15, and I'm concerned I won't have heard from UMD by then. I've heard from a few applicants who said it took them 3+ months for a decision.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Hi...im waiting too.  On their website it says decisions are sent out 3-4 weeks after the application is complete.  http://www.publicpolicy.umd.edu/admissions/faq?destination=node/744

Some people have already heard so decisions should continue to trickle in until March when the floodgates open.  Good luck

Also be sure to check out the "Government Affairs" subforum for all public policy info

I imagine it varries from person to person and from program to program. I submitted my application by mid-November and I heard back unoffocially from a member of the admissions committee around three weeks later that I had gotten in. That said, I am sure they will let you know by early April at the latest since most schools recognize most people want to make up their mind by April 15. Good luck! UMD would be a great school to go to for Public Policy!

Although it's a different program, I applied to American Studies at Maryland (our deadline was Dec 15) and haven't heard anything.  Judging by the results forum, typically people heard from UMD by early February for Amer Studies, but it doesn't look like anyone has heard yet this year.  Makes me wonder if the university is going through a different notification process than in years past?

Kingofqueens-- Thanks, I'll go look at that forum now. I noticed the "3-4 weeks" estimate on their website as well, but it doesn't seem anyone has actually had that experience. I suppose we'll see. Good luck to you, as well!

Faraday-- Thank you! I hope you're right; I've had friends who didn't have all their acceptances/rejections back before April 15, and it really threw their whole academic career for a loop. I appreciate your reply.

PubHist-- I've never applied to UMD before so I can't say for sure. I know that, this year, decisions will be posted to our applications under "check your application status" as soon as they're ready. It seems the whole school is taking a bit longer than usual this season, though. My best friend applied back at the end of December and was told via phone not to expect a decision until the end of March. Crazy.

a thought dawned on me today, as i was discussing this whole "sequestration" hoohah with a co-worker: there's a chance that many public universities — and private ones that offer grants, fellowships, etc. — have to delay their admissions process until they have a sense of what their funding will be like. it's really thrown a lot of people in my field of work for a loop: a forest might be able to hire 3 seasonal employees, 2 students, and 2 interns, or everyone except the head honchos might get furlough and find themselves S.O.L. for a full season (which, for many of us, is the vast majority of our income). everyone's holding their breath until march 1st. i suspect it may be the same for many programs.

I got my decision about two weeks after the deadline. I have to locate an advisor myself or they cancel the acceptance, though. I think this is just the MEES program that does this - since there's no TA option available through them. I suppose it could be a weeding policy, but it strikes me as one that would annoy faculty. Anyway, just posting this as something else that could potentially happen.

I applied to AMST too

Contacted the school a few times

Heard nothing

I'm assuming rejection already

I applied to neuro and cog sci with a deadline of December 1st. I heard through a friend that someone she knew was interviewing there this month, however there are no posts on the results search from this year. My POI also mentioned that they probably couldn't afford to bring in international students for interviews. Despite this, I'm presently operating under the assumption that I'm going to get rejected.

I applied to MarylandThe deadline was December 15. I still have yet to hear back from them. My adviser has let me know, based on correspondence with someone there (which wasn't actually about me but someone else), that he thinks decisions were made a month ago and I have probably been rejected. Still it would be nice to get something which confirmed that. It's not that I don't trust my adviser, it's just that I need to go ahead and see my rejection so I don't keep feeling like I threw my application into some black box, never to be heard about again.

I've applied to Maryland twice (rejected twice).

Last year I submitted in like November or December but didn't get my official rejection letter until the following September when I'd begun reapplying.  I'm not sure what their deal is.

This go around I was rejected via personal message from my POI but still no letter or anything from admissions.

That seems awfully irresponsible!

I'm tempted to ask the graduate coordinator about decisions, but I'm a bit scared to because a) it is something I never done and B) the application portal says that decisions will be released by mail only and not through email or phone correspondence.

By mail only? Which department?

My department secretary told me to contact the graduate studies coordinator but she didn't respond:(

All/most departments I believe. It says so on the application site where I check the status. I think it's a university policy. You may get an unofficial acceptance from a prof. or something like that, but I believe the official graduate school acceptance only comes through mail (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

That makes it extremely bothersome especially when the snail mail has to cross continents before decision deadlines are here

I guess I've missed that! I've always assumed I would learn by email or website from past results. Thanks!

My application says that too, and I still got an email from one of the professors with whom I was corresponding. I received a letter too, about two weeks after the email.

I just got an email to check my decision status on the application site (the email said that the official notification would also be sent in the mail). I really thought that UMD was the best fit for me, and both professors I was in contact with thought I was a good fit both for them and the program. Oh well.

Has anyone heard back from the Mech E or Aero/Astro departments?

It is now April and the results show that only one person has been admitted to a masters program. Is anyone in contact with the faculty or staff there?

I have not heard back from Aero/Astro. I am not in contact with anyone, but not for lack of trying. I emailed admissions in August, then emailed a number of professors in October. They definitely missed the boat on me. I have already made my decision. I can't believe that are taking so long.
