I don't want to spread myself to thin with getting all this stuff done.

That's exactly how I feel. The last time I applied I had so much going on that I couldn't keep everything straight. I think that I am going to request only one class to teach next semester and take more hours at my retail job. That way my lesson plans and grading won't take up all of my spare time. I want to approach and dedicate my time to my applications this year like a full-time job.

I can't get out of teaching two classes in the fall, but luckily my other job has been very cool about me only working during breaks. I'll be taking three classes, but I think I should be able to manage ok. I plan on getting a lot of work done over the summer though.

Hi, I have a question about conference presentation: does anyone know if it's ok to use a modified/extract of your MA thesis as a paper to present at a conference? I got a very late notice of a conference that I'd love to participate in and I don't think I'll be able to come up with a completely new paper.

I think that's fine. I've presented condensed versions of a thesis before. The difficult part is shortening it because EVERYTHING is important! Just pick a chapter or section to submit! Good luck!

Ya know, I've never submitted anything before, mostly because I didn't know how before I started my Master's program. But now I have this list of calls I'm going to submit to over the next few months and hopefully, at least a couple come through hehe. My theory prof is actually making us do a conference paper for our class (though it's up to us whether we try to submit) so that's handy. Gave me a nice little motivational push lol.

Sounds like a good plan  :)

That is a good plan of action! I also second your welcome to the party! Good Luck!

Thank you both! I hope it'll work out this time. :D

So what schools are you all (tentatively) considering applying to? I know I've been working on building a list for a while now, and I imagine other people have been doing that as well.

Ha! As if I've gotten that far in the process.

I've seriously got a list of about 30 programs and have only delved far enough as to ask my S/O where they wouldn't want to live.

So, yeah... about that...

It was nice of you to ask your S/O. I, legit, just made a list and said, "After so many applications, location is low on the totem pole." HA! Luckily, she is very supportive and said she will move with me anywhere. She is a creative writer which means 1. that she can work from anywhere and 2. we will be filthy rich. My favorite reaction of hers to my list though was "You want me to move to Reno? THERE'S NOTHING THERE!"

Actually, Reno is lovely.  I was really surprised when I went out there; there's tons of outdoor activities to do (Tahoe is only about 30 minutes away), a beautiful climate, and stunning mountain panoramas around the entire city.

That's awesome. I really liked the feeling of Reno when I was doing my research! I just told her to calm down!

Yup: if you like snowboarding and such (I do), it's a "top ten location." Also if you like the casino buffet scene.

Haha well at least that's something.

Haha my fiancee is willing to move anywhere I go, but he'd probably cry if I tried to move to Arizona or something lol.

I'm so far ahead in planning I already know that I'm going to be accepted at UT and CMU and they'll fight over me. :-D

Haha. I second Datatape! Both great programs. I have a friend in the CMU Rhetoric PhD program and he loves it. Good luck!
