I don't think anyone here applied to UConn biochem but I'll post this anyway in case lurkers care:

Uconn doesn't do interviews. They are in the process of ranking applicants, then a decision will be posted on the ApplyYourself website. They anticipate they'll been done in 4-5 weeks.

Back to waiting for me. Haha

OMG! I would think that interviews gives a clear idea for both institution and applicants for being compatible with each other. Ranking lacks in so many ways! Good luck to you ERR_Alpha

Anyone else interviewing at Mt. Sinai? I emailed the coordinator about lodging and haven't received anything yet.

Acceptances from Johns Hopkins and Columbia! Nice afternoon surprises!

What was the Hopkins interview like? How quick did they reimburse you for travel?

Any idea how far in advance Einstein lets you know who you'll interview with?  I'm interviewing next week and I'm not sure who to prep for as I listed like 8 profs on the form.

The Hopkins interview was great! There were about 30 applicants there and almost the same number of grad students who spent time with us. The first day was interviews, then a happy hour and dinner at the top of the world trade center with students and professors (which was a ton of fun)! Next day was a talk then poster session, then a tour and dinner. The students were all super nice and the faculty were pretty informal at all the events.

They gave me a check for the plane tickets (which I bought in December) when I got there, and gave me an envelope to send my other expenses back to them (taxi ride, shuttle from hotel to airport)

re: Joint CMU-Pitt Comp Bio program - Does anyone know the difference between "enrolling" through CMU or through Pitt?  Seems like PhD is awarded by one or the other based on thesis advisor?  But is the option offered, or is admission based on just one or the other?

My son (not on this forum) is looking for input.  He was contacted by Pitt professor based on his statement of interest (they said)?  Or are there different criteria?

Does anyone have any thoughts?  Thanks in advance.

Hey BostonBio, did you figure out what was going on with Columbia?

I emailed them and they said that the new application system is not yet bug-free, so the rejection email was an accident. Not sure how many people it's been sent to though....

I received an acceptance to CUNY Graduate Center's PhD program in Biology. Has anyone else received one? I'm a little puzzled because I didn't interview! Do they have an interview process?

Musicalscientist, do you know anything about Colombia Biological Sciences? How was your interview?

I applied there (submitted on Dec. 1st), and didn't get an interview invite yet, but when I emailed them they said that they hadn't sent out all of them yet, that there was another interview weekend in March. They said they would send them out in about two weeks exactly two weeks ago.

I literally found out this morning who I was interviewing with about 2 hours later.  Just ask them about their own stuff and they'll talk for the entire time.

Edit: spelling.

Good to know.  Thanks!

Yes, my last interview was more like a lecture. Kind of disappointing because I had all these questions about their research, but for those who didn't have time to read the profs' research, it was a blessing. I think as long as you can reiterate what they say and pick up on their keywords, you should be ok. Honestly, I overprepared for my last interview, but it was my first one and I didn't know.

You should see section five of the program handbook. <http://www.compbio.pitt.edu/policies_procedures/programhandbook.html>

The interview went well! In the past, they have only done one interview day. However, for reasons unknown, they decided to split their interviews into two days this year. In the first wave of invites, the gave us the choice between the first or second interview day. However, I know that they haven't filled their second interview day yet. As far as I know, in the next couple of days they are sending a first wave of acceptances to those who have interviewed and also planning on inviting people to their March interview session. Good luck!

Congrats for real then! Just to confirm, you applied to the Biological Sciences department? And you interviewed last weekend?

I just had a really intensive week of interviews, I was on the plane four times within the last 6 days... Anyway, it seems like it is all over now. I am starting to get the results from my interviews: Acceptances at the Oxford Genomic Medicine and Sanger PhDs, both my top choices!!!  They require me to make up my mind by Monday, so that does not leave much time for decisions....

My situation:

Oxford- Genomic Medicine and Statistics - Interview- Acceptance- 20000£ per year

Oxford- NDM Prize Studentship - Interview

Sanger Institute- 4-year PhD -Interview - Acceptance - 20000£ per year

Cambridge- Mathematical Genomics and Medicine - Interview

Imperial College- Genomic Medicine - Interview - Rejection

Harvard- Biostatistics

Harvard- Public Health: Genetic Epidemiology and Statistical Genetics

Yale- Biostatistics

UC Davis- Entomology- Interview

Penn State- Entomology - Acceptance - 26000$ per year + tuition fee waiver

Cornell- Genetics, Genomics, and Development - Interview

Any advice on which offer to accept? Sanger or Oxford? The main difference is that the Sanger one includes three rotations in the first year, while the Oxford one consists of two rotations and statistics courses. Loved the faculty at Sanger though, so I am slightly leaning towards it. Oxford however might provide a better foundation in statistics...

I can't take the wait any longer, so I started my backup plans.  I applied to a summer internship to Europe.  I am wagering I'll hear back from them sooner than some of these graduate schools.

I am still hoping for UCLA ACCESS Genetics and Genomics to come through.

If I were you I would go for the one where I loved the faculty!

Does anyone know how common it is for programs to ask for a decision within a few days, the way Etern's acceptances have, instead of giving you until April 15? I have a funny feeling one of the programs where I'm interviewing might want a decision very quickly. I wouldn't mind that at all; just curious how common it is.

Penn State emailed me asking for a phone interview! Which is weird because when I was there they said I wouldn't have to interview again. But it's something! Closer to having an offer in my hands!

Maybe they want to learn more about which adviser would be the best fit for you!

That's what I'm thinking. I interviewed with/visited two PIs and one grad student while I was there. They have a ton of faculty though! They only do three three-week rotations and then you're in your thesis lab. Not sure if I'm a fan of the short rotations.

Only one of the three places I'm interviewing does rotations at all, as far as I can tell. I wouldn't mind knowing which lab I'm going into and jumping right into the research that will lead to my dissertation. But I think either way could be good. Good luck with the phone interview! When will it be?
