I got a PM from someone who emailed the social psych coordinator at UNC-CH.  All interview invites have been sent out.

Can the person who got an interview from Harvard PM me your POI? Thanks!

Does anyone respond to POI requests? I've requested one myself with no response. I'm wondering what people must think our motives are, outside plain ole curiousty, of course.

Some freely share their POI when asked and don't think much of the request. Others find the question intrusive and think it's no one else's business.

Hello!

Has anyone heard from the UPenn Social and Cultural Psych program?  I see posts in the results forum that the invitations went out for Psychology (but not specifying an area). . .then again, I know the website says the Psych department admits as a whole and not into specific areas. . .

Any idea about invitations for UPenn Psych with a focus on the Social and Cultural Psych program?

Thanks for the update. Guess I'll add it to my assumed rejection list.

Has anyone ever heard of social applicants being offered admission without a preliminary interview? I just noticed on the results page that someone got accepted to a developmental program (presumably without a formal interview), and I'm wondering if the same ever happens in social programs?

Yes, it happens.  I was interviewed by phone for one program, in person for another, and had a "chat" with one other POI last year, but the rest of my acceptances were all done without an interview.  In at least one of those cases, there was some discussion between my POI and one of my recommenders about whether I was likely to accept, but nothing resembling an interview for me.

Edited to add: Oh, I forgot -- there was one other school where I declined the interview.

U Mich this year did acceptances without interviews, but invited accepted students to a visit weekend Feb 21-22, so I guess it's possible. But is there any way to tell if specific schools have interview weekends or not/ what their process is?

Just saw on the results board re: Pitt Social.  Any chance the poster could pm me your POI?  Thanks!

Thanks so much to the person who messaged me!

Anyone else out there looking at Pitt?

I applied to Bio/Health for Pitt. When I emailed the psych coordinator on the 15th she said that faculty were still actively reviewing and they they wouldn't know anything for a week ...

I applied to that program.  They sent out a mass email invite.

Hi all,

I'm new to this site. This is my 3rd round of PhD applications and I can't believe I hadn't heard about this site until this week! I especially appreciate the comments earlier in this thread about how very few people understand how selective these programs are. My first time applying, right out of undergrad, I wish I had the knowledge I do now! I'm currently finishing up my Master's in Social Psychology and am so lucky to have gotten a PhD acceptance right before Christmas.

What I know: Michigan State accepted me in December without an interview (!) and their visit weekend is Feb 20-21, U of Arizona and WashU first did Skype interviews and then extended invitations for their interview weekends. I haven't heard from U Oregon, but I'm guessing that means no-go based on the results list, and U Illinois U-C doesn't seem to have started contacting people.

Having done this whole process 3 times now, I'm happy to give whatever advice I can! Good luck everyone!

I so admire your tenacity.  Congrats on your acceptance!

There is no way I'm putting myself through this again. If I don't get in this time...oh well!

I'm also going to ask about Washington University's Social area -- has anyone received an invite/contact from someone in their department?

I haven't heard anything, but the Psych website says that interview invites have "started to go out" as of 1/15.

Can anyone comment on University of Alabama Social? On the results page I see phone interviews occured, phone interviews scheduled, and in-person interviews scheduled. But some people simply listed "Experimental Psychology", which covers cognitive, developmental, and social. I am wondering if the differnt foci have a different process, or different dates for in-person interviews. Anyone with info on Alabama?

Also, anyone applying to Alabama social, please PM me your POI if you wouldn't mind.

A post-doc in the social area at WashU said invited were going out 'in the next few days' on 1/18, so I think it's likely that they should all be out either already or by the end of this week for sure

Has anyone heard from UConn Social or Stony Brook Social/Health?

I haven't heard anything on Stony Brook.  Though I think they conduct their interviews a week or two after SPSP (which is late this year on Feb 13-15).

I was hoping that wasn't the case!

Just as an aside, I talked a lot with UIUC profs last year, and they try really hard to let people know as soon as they are rejected.  Now, UIUC is also often slower to get through applications (they frankly aren't the most organized profs in the world, and they start pretty late for Spring semester, which slows them down more), but once they start, they don't (historically) hold all rejects for the end like some other schools.  Instead, they do a Yes-No-Maybe system, where the definite Yes's are admitted (very few of those), the Maybe's are contacted in general preference order (some will be admitted), and the No's are rejected immediately.  The Maybe's will be held on to until they become Yes's or No's.

What does this mean? It means that (historically!) once UIUC starts rejecting people, no news is good news! :)
