far_to_go Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Oh, I see. Mine says "external peer review began on 4/3/14." It's a bit disappointing to be knocked out so quickly :-/ Thanks for your good wishes, and best to you as well!
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 Better knocked out quickly. I applied in August, and didn't get the unofficial rejection until mid-February, and never got the official news. I only found out that reviews were finally up in mid-March because of another forum. With that kind of lag, and the seeming disorganization, I'm not sure it's worth my effort to reapply... But it doesn't matter, because W-G is going to give us all lots of money!
far_to_go Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Yeah, I heard about the disorganized mess that followed after the NSF August deadline. Apparently they've got their shit together now and are eliminating people with ruthless efficiency! C'mon, Wenner-Gren! Give us some good news today! I'm also waiting to hear about a small $2.5K grant and should find out this week. I'm worried that I'll find out that I didn't get the WG and then also didn't get the little one- it would be adding insult to injury!

My advisor keeps telling me that once you get any kind of external funding, it is always easier to get more...such a silly system we're operating within!
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 I have a book review due to a journal on Friday...but that hasn't stopped me from checking my email every 4 minutes!
medler Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 No word about Wenner Gren, but I did get declined from NSF today. Knew it was a long shot.
far_to_go Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Same here, medler. Sympathies. Hoping we both do better on the W-G.
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 My reviews for my (rejected) NSF were so strange. I even got one "poor", but the reviewer critiqued me for not bringing in literature that I think is completely irrelevant to what I'm trying to do. Here's hoping for some W-G news today!
medler Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Thanks, far_to_go. I hope we all do better with WG! I am happy with getting through the first round on my first attempt. I feel like even if I get declined this time, there is hope for next time, right? I talked with my advisor about the reviews, and she said unlike NSF senior research proposals, the DDIG panels consist of certain individuals who are not specialists. For example, my project looks at brain evolution and she said it's really rare that an NSF DDIG panel has an expert in anything related to the brain. She also said there were some comments that showed the panel's lack of knowledge on the subject. But I guess it's our job to make sure they understand our proposal. Not sure about whether to apply again. Will all depend on WG.
Mata Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I'm sure I'm not the first person to point this out, but the window for making revisions to resubmit by May 1st is quite narrow, isn't it? It'll be less than 3 weeks if they send out decisions any later than tomorrow.
medler Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 It's going to be a tight turnaround for those who need to resubmit. I think I've read somewhere that in the past, the turnaround between notification and next award deadline has been as narrow as a week. If I have to resubmit, the Office of Sponsored Programs is going to have a fit! I still think we won't find out until next week.

_ginger_ Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I noticed yesterday that you are considered ineligible to apply to the next round if you still have not received notification from the previous round. http://www.wennergren.org/faq/apply-more That would really throw a wrench in my plans. Does anyone know if they've ever taken that long to send out notifications? Has anyone considered emailing them to see when we might expect to know? _ginger_ 1

Does anyone know if they've ever taken that long to send out notifications? Has anyone considered emailing them to see when we might expect to know? I'm relatively certain that, barring any extreme circumstances, they make their best efforts to get reviews back before the next deadline. However, they've cut it close in the past...like a week or less. I'm hesitant to email, especially because first round notifications specifically say not to...
_ginger_ Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 So it does... well, poo. It's very hard to plan my summer without knowing if I have funding.
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 So it does... well, poo. It's very hard to plan my summer without knowing if I have funding. Yes, of course it does...the worst part of this process is waiting. And waiting. And waiting...
Mata Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Does anyone know if they contacted everyone at once in the past? Or is it staggered like NSF? And e-mail like they did for those who passed the the first stage, I'm guessing? My guess is Wednesday next week...

And e-mail like they did for those who passed the the first stage, I'm guessing? My guess is Wednesday next week... Looking at the last few years' results, I think the reviews come out around the same time (maybe within an hour or two). An email is send either telling you to reapply, or asking for updated budgets. If you get the request for an updated budget, you get the official letter via snail mail about a week later...
far_to_go Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 If I get an e-mail asking for budget revisions, I'm going to be like "nope, still no money coming in from other sources! Definitely still need all the money I asked for!" Ughhhh, I wish they would just get it over with! I doubt that we'll hear anything on a Friday, though.

I keep thinking that, of course, they probably have all the reviews back, and they're just waiting around to get them into emails to send to us. But every day we wait is another day we don't have to either prepare for our research, or to revise for May 1. Seriously antsy...
