jmb04 Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 I offered to send supplementary materials, including another writing sample and rec letter, and the DGS said it wasn't necessary and I just have to wait. Wait wait wait! Ugh. I called an admin to find out where I am on the wait list, but all she could tell me is that there are about 5 people on it. Hopefully I'm the only modernist on it, and that the accepted modernist opts to go elsewhere... and decides it soon!
georgica2 Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 So, does anybody here have any advice for how best to deal with being wait-listed? I've now received three full-on rejections, I've every reason to expect two more any day now, and I've been wait-listed at two schools, one of which is my top choice program. What's the etiquette in a situation like this? Do I fly out, meet with people (again), and make myself as conspicuous as possible? Or would it be more prudent just to sit, wait, hope, bite my nails off, and drink heavily? What do people think? For one, I'd contact the department head, the DGS, and any professors you've been in touch with and reiterate your interest in the program. I'd also make a point of telling whichever school you're more interested in that it's your first choice and that you'd absolutely attend if you're taken off the waitlist (no need to tell them that you haven't been admitted anywhere.) I think that giving a program a guarantee that you'll attend will substantially increase your likelihood of being admitted off the waitlist if there are spots - by the time they're offering waitlist spots, it's getting down to the wire and they won't want to risk getting turned down again. Also, update them with anything new you've done since submitting your application: do you have any publications forthcoming, conferences, additional grades, internships, etc. that might boost your application? I wouldn't necessarily spend money to go and visit again unless it's conveniently located and inexpensive and I don't think any school expects a waitlisted applicant who's already visited to come again - email and/or phone contact is the way to go.
artschoolhopeful Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 just out of curiosity--is anyone still waiting on Northwestern?
ristastic Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 If anyone is waiting on Rutgers, I believe they've started posting decisions on the application status website. Mine switched over this morning. Good luck!
curiouser and curiouser Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Thanks to everyone for their advice on tackling the wait-list issue. I'm diving in, with fingers crossed!
socksocksocks Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 If anyone is waiting on Rutgers, I believe they've started posting decisions on the application status website. Mine switched over this morning. Good luck! What letter does your last name begin with? My status hasn't changed from 'no decision,' so maybe they are going through the alphabet.

Last name begins with G, maybe you're on an unofficial waitlist or something? I'm not sure if they've notified all the admitted students yet.

mitzydoodle Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 what is going on with johns hopkins? A friend of mine was accepted to JHU some time ago...if you look back in this thread you'll find it. Don't know when they will officially notify-I haven't heard anything back but have another great acceptance, so I'm not worried about it. Best of luck to all.
Hugh10 Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 To those who had IFA interviews last week - if you don't mind me asking - did they give you any idea of when decisions would be made?
darts85 Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 To those who had IFA interviews last week - if you don't mind me asking - did they give you any idea of when decisions would be made? Nope. No info.
nowhere13 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Nope. No info. Any info on what the interview was like? I'm sure its very different from what the conservation interviews will be like...but still....
darts85 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Any info on what the interview was like? I'm sure its very different from what the conservation interviews will be like...but still.... Pretty far ranging interview. Sit-down with a five-member faculty committee. More or less about your background, research interests, why the IFA, etc. No real curveballs--the questions were clearly based off my application and what was in my file. Definitely bring questions of your own and be prepared in terms of what about your file you want to highlight though. Plenty of opportunity to direct the conversation your way.
rp3 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 has anyone heard anything on funding from UT Austin yet?
lizart Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 On UT funding: For the MA, yes. After I called and emailed, got a response today. Not good news. Good luck to everyone.
pd24 Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I noticed a posting on today's results page saying that someone was rejected from the IFA's Phd program but admitted to its MA program. I applied for only the MA. Does anyone know if acceptances have been issued for those candidates? Would the person who wrote that posting mind telling us your subfield?

It wasn't me, but just a heads up: last year, IFA notified in waves, so just because some people have already been accepted (and rejected) doesn't mean they're done giving out offers.
Hugh10 Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Looks like IFA is sending out notifications! Any posters care to share their subfield - funding offers ?
Oedipa Maas Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Anyone here currently in University of Chicago's MAPH program/ can weigh in on whether it is worth a shot? I have been rejected by all but one of the PhD programs I applied for (I am still waiting to hear from Berkeley, but I am expecting to hear the worst). I would eventually like to enter a PhD program and I am wondering if going the MAPH route would be an advantageous move, especially considering that I will not be receiving funding for the MAPH program. My concentration is in modern/contemporary with emphasis on critical theory and performance. I do not have any student loans from undergrad, but I will independently finance my graduate studies. Any insight would be very greatly appreciated!
Hugh10 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 As I was making a post in the Courtauld thread I received an email regarding my scholarship application and have just discovered I will be getting no money to go to school in London. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the situation - anyone at the courtauld? or anyone who knows about the school? I was under the impression that they were in a fairly good financial situation so I was absolutely not expecting NO FUNDING - especially being an international student. I'm wondering if I should be offended - or if I'm wrong in thinking that most international students get some money. While I'm on the topic could anyone give me their opinion on the Courtauld - I ultimately want to get my PHD in America - so would be going for just an MA. Is there an advantage/disadvantage to getting an MA at a school different to the one you ultimately want to get a phd from. I'm thinking wider exposure and more contacts versus building relationships... I definitely feel a little less wanted now...

I'm in a really similar situation-- no funding and I eventually want an American PhD. I'm also not entirely clear how solid the Courtauld's reputation is, given that it's only a one year program and has an unusual program of study. I have offers from several American MA programs, but am having a hard time turning down London. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding the value of a Courtauld degree? If it were a choice between, for example, an MA at Courtauld or at Columbia, which would be better?

It's not surprising at all that they didn't give you any funding. They are experiencing some serious financial problems.
