astroyogi Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 As a person in physics, I've never been able to watch more than a couple episodes of the show because of the lack of non-ridiculous, intelligent female characters -- the "dumb blonde vs. aspergian" humor gets old for me before the first punchline
GeoDUDE! Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Well, I originally started the thread as a 'fun' thread because I too think it is funny that academics have strong opinions on it, but I think I've offended some people now. Ooops. You haven't really offend people with the topic, but more over your lack of acknowledgement that some people could take this seriously. Someone once told me to think before I spoke, and I've always tried to take that advice.

There is no reason to be offended by a show or a forum about a show. I embrace my neridness and laugh at myself while watching the show. If you dont find it funny then dont watch it. The show picks on penny just as much though. Also, I don't get why people find it offensive that penny is a female and the dumb blonde type. The show isnt at all sexist. They pick on that man for being dumb too (I cant remember his name but he is the one that dated penny and then amy had a crush on him). There are plenty of intelligent female characters in the show too (Amy, Leslie, Priya etc). I am a female in a male dominated science area where alot of people (probably including me) act a lot like some of the characters in the show. I don't find anything from the show offensive. QASP 1
starofdawn Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 MakeYourself, you're coming off as someone very immature in this thread. When someone disagrees with you, you respond with snark and sarcasm. You should either counter-argue with valid, logical points, or be comfortable that some people will simply have different opinions from you.

GeoDUDE's comment was more in regards to MakeYourself dismissing those who raise points about why academics would find the show bad with snarky comments that are meant to denigrate anyone who disagrees with him or her. There's nothing against those who like the show. Heck, I liked the show once and still appreciate the earlier seasons for being humorous. You enjoy the show. More power to you. But MakeYourself shouldn't disregard anyone else who makes counter arguments. MakeYourself is behaving like a troll, and continuous attempts to raise the point that he or she is behaving fatuously is met with continued derision. Really, really feels like MakeYourself is a troll people, at least in this particular thread. Sigaba 1

Well, the truth is, I dont care enough about this dispute nor do I care if I come off immature on an online forum with grad students.

Im being sarcastic btw. Ok guys sorry for not taking your responses seriously (not being sarcastic). But in all honesty I wasn't expecting anyone to make a friggin diagram model extravaganza on the show so I found it hilarious. Sorry if that was immature of me, please forgive me. I was kinda trollin though eh? Good times.
CageFree Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I've never seen a truly funny sitcom that was 100% politically correct. For instance, the way so many of you feel about BBT is how I feel about Family Guy. I hate that show. Hate it with a passion. I find it incredibly offensive. But what I find offensive, others find funny... and so it goes. And for the record, I don't think Penny is ridiculous. Neither is Bernadette (who is my favorite character because Melissa Rauch rocks). As far as the "well, the show doesn't match real life" - You can't do a comedy that is exactly like real life because real life is, for the most part, boring. Many of the characters (as is the case, I think, with most comedies) are essentially composites... We all do things that are ridiculous on occasion but no person does them all the time. This is not to say that people don't have a right to their opinions... everyone does, obviously. I'm just saying that in general, the objections many have are issues anyone can have with any comedy that's based on stock characters. It's not a problem with BBT exclusively. wildviolet, mop and QASP 3
