While I sit here twiddling my thumbs for the 4 decisions I'm waiting on, here's a question:

I already have a Masters degree. Think that makes me a less desirable MFA candidate than someone who does not? I've heard that most programs look (almost) exclusively at your writing sample, but I have a hard time believing that...

shoopster where did you apply? depending on how you presented your goals in your personal statement, i would say don't give up on yourself just yet. a program might get where you're coming from.

Shoopster,

I had the same concern before applying, but a lot of tenured professors with multiple degrees (before they got their PhDs) told me to toss that concern out the window. I did just that.

No, I don't think it makes you a less desirable candidate at all! I noticed when I was researching various MFA programs, that there are some programs that only allow students who already have a masters degree to teach during their first year, and some programs offer a slightly higher stipend to candidates who already have a masters. Think of it this way, too: maybe you'll feel more prepared to take on an MFA since you have already been a grad student, and perhaps you'll have more teaching experience than some other students. If your masters was in English, it could definitely help, since perhaps you have more experience with lit theory or scholarly writing. If it wasn't in English, I still think it could benefit you- an MFA applicant with a diverse background is appealing, and makes you look like a more "well rounded" applicant. Just my two cents.

I'm confused about this, though, because someone linked the other day that Michael Byers released a statement saying nothing had been sent out—and this was a week ago.

i put that link up, where he commented last wednesday. since he first said that, notifications have gone out. it's been a fast moving week in the notification world for Michigan. it seems like they tend to accept and waitlist at the same time, and rejections follow usually in march.

Ugh, that's a huge bummer. Thanks for clarifying!

I'd love to know how many of the Iowa acceptances posted here are true. I heard today (from someone in the industry who has no reason to lie) that Iowa generally doesn't start calling their accepted applicants until March (consistently). I was also warned that every year people (trollers) get on forums and claim to have received acceptances from the most popular programs.

Of course, this doesn't mean Iowa, for example, didn't start a couple of weeks early this year, but my point is that we really just have to wait and see (especially when it comes to the super popular programs). Should we start demanding an uploaded photo of the acceptance email? LOL I'm kidding.

Good reminder. Keeping it real.

no lies here! promise! as far as when iowa notifies people, it's possible that it may take certain programs a bit of time to figure out who gets what as far as ta positions, research assistantships, etc.? just guessing.

I know I was one of the earliest to get contacted —without going into too much detail, I omitted something from my application by accident and received a call from Iowa asking me to upload the document (an inconsequential financial document). The next day I received THE call from Samantha Chang. I left out a lot of details but basically that's what happened. I'm under the impression that they haven't given out the bulk of this year's acceptances.

EDIT: @theretheirthey're I'll see you next semester at the Dey House! —the kid from NYU

thanks for this HeyIowa! i can still cling to hope! its definitely likely that they haven't notified everyone yet, since its only been about a week and not a ton of people have claimed acceptances. unless someone knows otherwise? im gonna keep my fingers crossed here in chicago :)

I think it's all very subjective and in some cases a big ole crapshoot, haha! But, it is rather fun to be a part of it. Hopefully, we all get accepted into a program of our choice at some point this year or in the years after. I think everyone on MFA admissions committees/teams have very tired eyes from reading, reading and more reading..man, it must be so much reading.

Has anyone heard from NYU for poetry? I know this is around the time they start sending out their decisions.

Is anyone planning to visit their acceptances? Or have visited their acceptances?
