tcolcord Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Anybody know if UC Irvine is good for painting/drawing? Looking for maybe one or two more schools to apply to last minute in CA Columbia Hunter VCU Temple SFAI Berkeley UCLA UT Austin
chewgumdrawlines Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Hey Fellow Applicants! I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out a question that I have regarding my images. Some MFA programs require that you submit your work at 72 dpi. The problem is that since my work/ images tend to be very small, when I reduce the dpi, the size of my images becomes significantly decreased (like, 500 x 600 pixels, type of thing) SO my question is, if after you lower the dpi of an image, can you enlarge the image dimensions? Or will that degrade the quality of your image? Anyone having a similar problem? Thanks people!!
bannedinbc Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 You don't need to change the image dimensions when you change the dpi. If you are doing this in Photoshop, you need to uncheck the box that says "resample image", that way the number of pixels will stay the same, changing the dpi will only change how much space the image takes up eg. a 1200x800 pixel image.. at 300 ppi is 4"x2.7", changed to 72 ppi is ~17x11.
bloodred Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 We have such a long way to go...... Anyone applying to Roski?

bloodred Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Well, nothing in particular happened. The city is lovely the people are amazing....my program just may not be the right fit for me. Also I have almost zero interest in teaching and that is pushed hard over here at IU. I was actually kind of told otherwise during my interview, but the tables have turned. My work has just progressed to a point where the current professor cannot and doesn't give me the feedback I need and want. I think its primarily because of my message/content/media is not what he knows how to deal with. I need to work under a more diverse department that isn't run by very masculine men
jl10 Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Is anyone applying to Tyler? I just submitted my Temple graduate application and it said it may take up to 2 weeks to process. It was mentioned on the website that I should submit it before the deadline because of processing time, but it never mentioned it could take 2 weeks! There is a separate slideroom application that has my portfolio and SOP... and I submitted that as well. Should I be worried about any of this?
d e o Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Columbia University applicants: For the SOP, what is your interpretation of "an exploration of your work's relative place in the history of contemporary art." Do you think they are asking for a connection of your work to contemporary art? Or something else? I guess I'm just thrown off by what they mean by "exploration." Call me paranoid, but I want to do this correctly. Thanks!
Maya31 Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Just finished my application to RISD. Did anyone else log in to find the deadline date listed at January 17th on the top of the slideroom page?
chewgumdrawlines Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Applying to VCU- Is anyone else having a difficult time finding the requirements for the artist statement/ statement of purpose on their website?
jl10 Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 VCU's portfolio thingy sucks. I thought it was fine until I submitted and one of my slides was placed in the wrong order
rebecca_reid Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Graduated with my BFA in 2012, and I am applying to MFA programs in Painting at the following schools: Yale Columbia Hunter Rutgers UCLA University of Wisconsin, Madison University of Iowa, Iowa CIty VCU All applications are submitted.
jl10 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) Has anyone that is applying to Columbia noticed that on the instructions section of the application it says "thank you for your interest in the School of the Arts Summer and Global Programs." I don't see this mentioned anywhere else but just wanted to see before I submit if maybe I'm in the wrong section?! If someone could just confirm that they see the same thing and it's most likely an error on columbia's part it would make me feel much better about submitting! Edited January 11, 2015 by jl10

Jl10, I just submitted mine earlier today and I don't recall seeing that.
jl10 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Jl10, I just submitted mine earlier today and I don't recall seeing that. It seems really easy to miss...I'm assuming there is no way for you to access that main page right?
Moonjuggler Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 It seems really easy to miss...I'm assuming there is no way for you to access that main page right? I see them as different sections. When I'm on the Apply Now page, it says The Fall application for School of the Arts graduate programs. And I see up on top, other sections, one of which is for summer/global but it looks like a different application and it's through the School of continuing ed dept.

Yeah I'm going through the graduate program for sure. The title of my application is 2015 Visual Arts MFA, and all of the sections other than the instructions are relevant to an MFA program.

Strange that it would say that. Just to throw you off a bit and make sure you're on your game
Moonjuggler Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Jl10 I have a question for you, after submitting your VCU application, how long did it take to get the information from them to submit your images? That's my last application and I'm waiting on that.

woolybully Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 BARD PROGRAM This is a call for any and all opinions regarding the BARD program. It's listed very high on the US News list of MFA programs. I wonder if the low residency program results in a more diluted training experience, or perhaps more intense, or both? I am an older student with career change to art and wonder if the group of students there would be more diverse and hence an easier fit for me. Seeking any and all comments!! Thank You!!!
