Hi guys, I've been lurking the last few weeks but am at the point where I would love your input for my situation! Just posted in the funding and decisions thread too - what can I say I'm eager for advice :)

Accepted to Bard and USC.

USC is offering 15k, first and second yr. Tuition is 39k/yr. There is the possibility of a TA ship in the 2nd yr, which covers tuition + 11k stipend (must apply, I think it's competitive - every other mfa student receives one). So that means at the very least a 30k loan and the most an 80k loan. Administration at USC isn't particularly nice or flexible about funding currently. They are also known to have a terrible rapport w students and faculty, but the program does have amazing facilities in an amazing city, and they have some great grants for alum to teach at USC and travel/research. Oh and classes you can take in other esteemed depts.

Bard is offering 11k and their tuition total for summer and spring is 19k. That's 24k for the three summer program. These costs do not include the studio I would have to rent during my time in LA (where I live) and pay for access to the facilities I would like to use. Super nice administration and generous and thoughtful photo faculty. The program is in beautiful Upstate NY, but I do not see myself living on the east coast or moving to NYC. I'm currently in LA and have more of a community hear already so I question how I would nurture these east coast connections. The program is super intense but they say you get more FaceTime w faculty than a traditional school. You have studio visits nearly every other day during those 8 weeks. I'd have to figure out how to operate in a completely different place to achieve what I'm evolving in my work. Could be a great limitation and/or a pain in the butt since I'm moving towards sculpture.

Both have amazing intimate student communities and great faculty. What would you do?

I think if you want grad school to expand you out of your comfort zone into a new place I'd go to Bard. Not that Roski won't do that. Also at Bard you'd be coming back to LA and maintaining your community here.

Also, I really dont like when in MFA programs some people get the full ride stipend etc and others are paying full tuition, it can ruin the sense of comradery thats as important as any other aspect of grad school

Roski will probably stay great but who knows, on the other hand Bard is a great school right now for sure

also, I think you'll b fine either way! congrats on your champaign problems

Hey guys, love hearing all of your nail biting experiences about applications this year.. Been building my portfolio up and hoping to finally apply for the FA/16 year. I have a couple questions and maybe y'all can give me some advice. Obviously it's different for everyone, but at what point did you say "this is it, I'm ready!".

I've been out of undergrad for four years now, and while my resume is getting stronger I'm worried that I'm not where I need to be conceptually with my work. When did you decide to take the plunge and just go for it?

My top choice program is Glasgow School of Art, so anyone who has experience with their MFA program I would LOVE to to hear from..

General application advice/tips greatly appreciated.. Haha.

Also, for anyone who got into GSA this year, can you post a link to your work? Super curious!

Thanks!!

I'd say you are ready once you are confident in the ideas that you're interested in, and have begun to develop a personal voice.  You shouldn't be so solid in your practice that there isn't room for guidance and input (that is the point of grad school!).  To be really prepared, I would spend this year reading up on the artists that are interesting to you (look up interviews online, read some issues of ArtForum) to get familiar with how those artists write about their work.  You'll have a hard time getting accepted to grad school if you can't successfully argue for the choices you are making in your practice - be prepared to defend your ideas!

Also, when it comes to applying, get as many eyes on your application as you can before submitting.  It will help you refine your writing and be as clear as possible about why you want to go to grad school.

Bard is a great school, but USC is also great and has a huge network in the LA art world.  If you are planning on making a career in LA, USC will be a much better bet.

Also, a summer program is very different from a full year MFA.  If you are making sculpture, will you have enough time to get everything done over the summer that you want to?

Perhaps this is a q. for the Decisions topic, but is anyone else accepted to CMU actually going?

Hi MJamesPDX,

It's good to know your taking a thoughtful and metholdical approach preparing for the daunting process of applying to MFA programs.

I'll begin at GSA this fall and I'm happy to share my experience of applying, etc. May we take this conversation private? Is there a link on your tumblr?

I had always had a vague plan to apply to grad school 4 years out of undergrad, its a plan that i abandoned and committed myself to many times over. 2 years ago I moved to a new place where I knew only a few people, got a steady job, and had time/space to work. It really wasnt until a year ago that i decided i was for sure going to apply, as before then it wasnt about "building a portfolio" but just making things and seeing where it went. I went to national portfolio day, and based on the reviews and my own (relatively new) confidence in my work i decided to fuck it and apply. I anticipated a multiple year process, but things went well and im 99% sure im going to saic mfa pt/dw next fall (unless risd contacts me in the next few days, which i dont really expect to happen). I highly HIGHLY recommend going to NPD. I live in chicago, where a npd is hosted, so it was a very cost-effective way to create a list of schools to apply to (4 dollar train fare, cant beat that haha). Edited by Derpderpderp

Deoes anybody know of the merits of a two year versus a three year program?  I have been accepted to the University of Washington for Painting and I am considering this school or another program that is a three year program any thoughts would be awesome?

Also, does anyone who much about the funding at UW or about their studio spaces?

Congratulations! I was also accepted to UW (photo). The funding they offered me was is one quarter per year with a TAship, which means tuition waiver, 5k stipend, and healthcare. And the other two quarters per year vary. They offered me in state tuition (about half of out of state) plus a small stipend.

And the difference between a two and three year depends on the person. I liked the idea of a two year, and having to push myself to develop my work faster, as opposed to a three year where I feel my work would start to stagger near the end.

Of course, some people need that extra year. If your other uni is a three year and a program you love, then you should choose that one. I hope this helps!

I had several people that I trusted tell me that I was ready. I'd say look up old faculty from your undergrad, or other older artists you know and who you trust will give you an honest evaluation. That being said, only YOU can honestly know if you are ready to go through the application process.

I have discovered, that who accepts you and who doesn't seems largely arbitrary. It mystifies me. One person can be accepted to one so-called "well-respected" program, and rejected by another. Another person will be accepted by the opposite school and rejected by the first. It's very strange to me and seems to have as much to the politics within the programs and where they see their own program going more than the "quality" of the individual candidate's work. It's much like our own choices which does not always have to do with choosing the "best" school, whatever that really means.

What I'm trying to say is that if you do not get accepted by a program that you respect, then try again the next year.

I second this! I told a program last year that I couldn't attend because I couldn't afford it and they gave me an additional $8,000. (In the end it was still too expensive, because $42,000 a year is ridiculous for tuition), but in any case, it can work out if you just ask.

was this by any chance at RISD?

Has anyone not heard anything from SAIC just like me?

Does not being informed mean that I am rejected or on the waiting list?

The waiting is killing me........... :(  :(  :(  :(  :(

I haven't heard anything either uuuggghhh called last week and the person I talked to said they're sending all letters out on April 1, so a week or so after that we should hear. I guess that means they are sending them in the mail

MICA Mt Royal has offered me almost the same amount of funding as CMU. Which would you go with?
