2015 Canadian SLP Thread!

Recommended Posts

Hi masumasuda,

It was an extremely difficult decision, as I really could see myself in both professions. I also had invested so much time in both, and was very interested in the content in audiology so I still don't feel amazing about the decision. But I ultimately decided on speech as I would probably do better in a job that doesn't deal with technology as much. Also there is a much higher demand for speech pathologists, although they are both in demand. In addition, I also liked the flexibility of speech and that the degree was more easily transferable to the states.

I did not make it into Western. I was really hoping for it too, as it felt like the only one of the four I applied to that I had a chance to get into. I'm not getting into the U of T, U of A is already taking people off their wait list (which I am not on;my application is still "pending review") and I doubt I'll get into Dalhousie since it is so small and prestigious. I would like to congratulate everyone who has gotten accepted, you're great people who will make great SLPs and Audiologists. Hopefully, I day, I can join you there.

To those who didn't get in or are on the waitlist.. don't give up. A lot of people get in off the waitlist, I actually know of two people who were able to get in right before the semester started. Also many people don't get in their first time applying, in fact pretty much all the speech pathologists and audiologists I worked with were second time applicants. I had a speech pathologist tell me that U of A loves multiple time applicants and that a large portion of her class were second time applicants.

You have worked so hard to get to this point, I know that we all want to finish in as little time as possible but what's one more year in the long run when you are doing something you love.

This is my second time applying.. after working so hard to make my application competitive. Since my ROSI says nothing, I am assuming I did not get into U of T. I am feeling really discouraged.

That's good to hear! I was waitlisted at Western... Hopefully that's good news, but the continued waiting is going to be difficult, especially if it means being in suspense until the beginning of the semester!

Still waiting (like most people here) to see what U of T says this morning.

Good luck everyone!

Hey nins! I know it doesn't feel good to work so hard and not get in! The competition is so incredibly fierce for this program and is only made worse by the limited number of schools in Canada. I am from Northern Ontario so I had to relocate a good distance no matter what school I applied. I was declined admission to Western, and it is not official but I am assuming U of A is not happening either...but I actually got in to Wayne State in Detroit and was interviewed for a University in Buffalo. From my research Wayne Sate offers in-state tuition to those living in Ontario, and I plan on living in Windsor while I attend. My heart was set on Western, however there are way more schools in the states if that's a route you can see yourself taking. Good luck and KCCO!

I am sorry to hear that. I wish you would have at least gotten waitlisted at Western. Wow that is really good information about Wayne State because I am not considering US schools because I know they will charge an arm and a leg. All the best!

I emailed Western about my waitlist place last night and they emailed me back that I am on the top third of the list! Anyone who is waitlisted should try asking!

Hi Nins! Thanks for the feedback :) Would you mind letting me know who you emailed?

I emailed Janet, who is the student affairs person. Her email is on the main page of the SLP website. She is very nice and approachable. I also emailed Melanie, whos name was on the waitlist letter. Janet answered me though.

Ok perfect! I have been in contact with Janet in the past. She wasn't very specific with my waitlist spot, just said top half :(

I have heard 70.... but don't quote me on that. I have heard that by word of mouth. 70 is a lot of people on a wait list for 36 spots... :(

Just heard officially that there are 60 people on the waitlist. So at least our odds are somewhat okay? :)

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted! And for everyone who has been accepted on the waitlist (still a big accomplishment!).  I have also been accepted to U of T!  This is my first time applying, so this has come as a surprise.  I know everyone who applied is certainly qualified and would make wonderful S-LPs!

For those who have chosen U of T over Western, why did you make this choice? I'm from Manitoba, so out of the Ontario loop.  Any advise is welcome!
