GeoDUDE! Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 My POI (or should I just say "contact" now?) said that maybe the admissions committee automatically accepted my application when it was put in the "very good" pool... but no specific faculty have expressed any interest in me, which he knows because I was not invited to visit. And now I'm really freaking out about my visits. What if I only got the UCI one because my UG/current advisor wants to help me get my foot in the door -- but I know he has no funding for me, so I would go there for what exactly? To maybe try to impress a couple other people? Same with Davis... My POI is waiting on a grant. So what if he is the only one who actually expressed real interest in me going to the visit, and then he gets no funding, and then what? Does this make sense? Maybe I don't know how visits work. I feel like I am being teased over here... TAs arent funded by professors, so there is still a possiblity of you getting a TAship. I'm doing a TAship my first year and we have submitted grants to fund the rest of my PhD. It's actually really hard for new students coming and grants to line up, so its more common than you think.
jamesy1116 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I was told that VT has made some decisions, but that no final decision has been made on my application. I'm interpreting that to mean that I did not get in...

When I called up she said that they didn't look at my application yet jamesy1116 1

You mean funded by departments, not professors, right? An RA position is linked to a specific research grant, not so a TA position usually.

Thanks for talking this out with me, GeoDUDE! -- I'm feeling pretty down. I'll stay optimistic about a TAship there, and really try my best to impress people at my UCI/D visits. I'm also holding out hope for the CCWAS IGERT at Davis -- that would mean I don't need a faculty sponsor for the first two years, at least!

Crystalline_Sunlight Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Thanks for the advice all Looks like I'll be visiting after all. In other news!! Just received an invite out to Cornell's Visitation Days for Prospective Students :DDD It's definitely not an official acceptance, I don't think it's even an unofficial acceptance. Anyone know what this means for my chances? Surely they don't invite all prospective students... Will this mean that depending on how the visit goes, it could influence whether I get accepted or not? Cause that puts a lot of pressure on it! GeoDUDE! 1
columbia09 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Do schools send out decisions over the weekend ? Might be a dumb question but I'll ask anyway

Cause that puts a lot of pressure on it! If they are paying for your travel and stay, then you probably have a very good chance. I don't really know why they would have a visiting students day for candidates that aren't high on their list regardless. Just, like has been said before, be yourself and don't worry about "studying" everything or trying to sound smart ect. My guess is that its mostly likely not "interviews" but more of trying to put actual bodies to applications they are interested in. Having someone come into the department for 4-6 years could have a big impact on culture.
idiochromatic Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 UCSC is starting to send out invites for prospective student weekends that include informal offers.
bethileptic Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 (edited) UCSC is starting to send out invites for prospective student weekends that include informal offers. Yeah! I just got invited, and it says that I should be getting a formal letter soon... um, what? My other visit invites did not mention this! Edited to add: I'm surprised, because I thought these visits were for interviews/to make sure prospective students are a good fit. So is this just them wooing us? Or am I still courting them? It's like I'm dating again! Edited February 7, 2015 by bethileptic

It's like I'm dating again! If you aren't accepted, its a mixture of both (more them wooing you). They just want to make sure that the people they send formal offers out to accept as well. And for good reason. I'll have to bite my tongue about which place I think you'll like best because I'm biased, but congratz, it looks like you are going to have a few really good departments to pick from ! bethileptic 1

And, it's okay -- I know UC Davis is amazing I think I would be insanely happy anywhere in my list, though of course the visits will help convince me either way. So the ones who have not accepted yet, but invited... they want me to commit to them before they officially accept me? That sounds so sketchy :/ I'm so nervous now, after that thing with UCLA, I would hate for my hopes to get up again only to have nothing pan out.

The places who have invited without a formal acceptance are probably sorting through the details of funding or perfect fit, while the places who have invited and accepted probably have you at the very top of their list and they know they will accept you no matter what, so they might as well tell you. Also, if the POI has met you--probably more likely to get in before the weekend visit, I think, because you have already passed the in-person sniff test. I'll see you at UCSC's prospective student weekend! GeoDUDE! 1

At least I've gotten some tentatively good news so far.
GeoMex Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Another invitation to the UT campus was posted yesterday... Every day less and less chances and spots available, I wonder how many of the approx. 60 spots have been given.

In any case not everyone is going to go to UT Austin so they'll probably have a lot more spots open up in time. Has anybody been rejected yet or do they just keep those until April/May ? Also the majority of people accepted have been PhD applicants so I don't know if UT has some kind of order in regards to PhD and master students Edited February 8, 2015 by columbia09

I'm still wondering how many have been accepted by now.
