Pennsylvania State University - 2016

Hello,

I thought I would start a Penn State 2016 thread. You can post here if you are looking for roommates, information about State College, or anything of the sort.

Personally, I am looking for housing options. I am a graduate student and I will be living with my girlfriend starting in the Spring. I am also looking to get a dog. I am exploring both 1 BR/Studio and 2BR+ with another roommate.

I look forward to hearing replies.

I'm pretty sure I'll be committing to PSU! Hi everyone. Hoping to find a 1BR, but I don't have a car, so my options are limited. Hoping to find something at the visit weekend...

Hey fellow new Nittany Lions (mebbe?)! I'm not looking for a roommate, because I'm super introverted, but would like to make friends, also because I'm super introverted. What all are you interested in studying within your program? I'm in Mass Communications, which means I've got much to learn about things like criminology, entomology, and education...

Hi everyone! I too am a future Nittany-Lion. Similar to @zephiwho, my GF will be coming with next spring, and she is also in favor of getting a dog. My department funded a visit for me last semester, so I am at least somewhat familiar with the school and surrounding area. We're also headed to State College next week for a little spring break get away, if anyone wants me to check anything out for them while I'm there.

Another PSU admit here! Still waiting to hear from one more program but most likely I will be at Penn State in the fall. I'm visiting campus next week and plan on checking out some apartment options. Is anyone as excited about the nearby Wegmans as I am???

@herstory Please keep me updated on some apartments you check out, I don't think I'll be able to go see any.

I also would like to live with some other grad students. I thought I had a roommate lined up, but since I'm moving there in June it didn't work out.

I'm bringing my dog so it's ruled out a lot of complexes. Anyone wanna share a house? (kidding. not kidding)

@herstory I'll also be visiting next week, and looking at apartments. I'm interested in living alone, but I don't have a lot of other requirements. If you have any interest in looking together, please reach out! Apartment hunting is a weird process, and it might be nice to do it with another human.

Also, totally stoked about the Wegmans. :D

I'm coming to penn state :D Trying to apartment hunt from the UK which isn't so much fun. Looking for 1-beds or 2-beds + a roommate. Think I've found a nice apartment just depends if they will take me. I think, if I can justify it, a one bed suits me better as long as I make sure to socialise! Anyone up for yoga/gym buddies/hiking/adventuring?? Let me know!  I'm so excited about having regular access to some of my favourite things that won't break the bank like Arizona ice tea, trader joes chocolate spread & hot apple cider in fall, and super easy access to "special fairy" food as my dad calls it (I'm celiac). Okay that's enough verbal diarrhoea for one post.

@herstory Wegmans is like a grocery store, right?

@hippyscientist PSU has free yoga at the student wellness center, and there are several inexpensive gyms nearby also! In addition, there is the State College Farmers Market, the Winter Market, and some Amish markets. Among those, you will most likely be able to get fresh foods!

I'm excited about the theatres and museum on campus as well as the really neat library...it will be so nice to be in a more walkable neighborhood!

Yeah I'm going to gym on campus because it's next door to my office :) but yoga will be in town - need a bit of a life off campus too.

The library - oh gosh the library. It looks amazing!

I have officially committed! Whoohoo! Looking for apartments has proven to be even more frustrating than I thought it would be, because I have pets and a desire for more sunlight than a basement would provide. I thought I wanted to live alone, but maybe a roommate would be okay? If anyone is into making a home with some cuddly cats and a homebody who puts together a mean cheese plate (me!), reach out! Psyched to get to PSU and meet everyone. (: @herstory

Wegmans is THE grocery store. They originated in upstate New York and are only in a few eastern states now. I can't really describe them except to say that the first few times you go it feels like a sensory overload.

Hello, I have committed to Penn State, and I am definitely looking for a roommate for a house, preferably, or an apartment. I am a relaxed guy outside of grad school and work, and I like to play guitar, snowboard =( , and do other outdoor activities. I have always lived with roommates (several,, actually) and I have gotten along with every single one, even the weird ones that stay in their room all day. My stipend is very generous, so finances won't be a problem. Also, I will be moving with my couches, my big TV, which I'll probably put in a living room, and a lot of kitchen gear. I plan on getting a dog ASAP when I move there, which is unknown at this point (July or August). My girlfriend will be coming to live with me later in the academic year. Finally, I have a car, so I am willing to live a bit outside of town (already have areas in mind).

I would love to get in touch with like-minded people in a similar situation.

@herstory hahaha okay! I will have to go to THE grocery store :P And @hippyscientist I do love me some Trader Joe's, even though they don't carry certain things I would expect them to, like ramen noodles, silken tofu, and egg roll wrappers (you can tell what I made for dins yesterday).

Hi! My husband and I will be moving to State College in the fall. We are looking for a roommate (or two) as well. We'd like a 2 bed 2 bath but are flexible. House or apt doesn't matter. We're laid back and like to hike, play video games, and cook. We'd love to talk more about housing/ roommate options.

Hi all. I was admitted to PSU and am 90% sure I'm going to commit. I have been looking at housing options and am feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all! I'm definitely going to be looking for a roommate based on prices. A few things about my situation make it unique:

1. I am married, so my husband would be living with us as well. We're both really laid back.
2. We are a bit older than the traditional graduate student. I'm 28 and he's 31.
3. We have a car, so we'd be willing to live outside of State College if that made things more affordable. I'd like to stay on the bus line, though.

I'm in your age range, and I just found a place. I used Craigslist, and responded to everything that seemed relevant to my situation (not married, but two cats!). Individual management websites were fine, but tedious after a while. Highly recommend the craigslist route, even though it's a lot to keep track of. The roommates/shares section is updated constantly.

Thanks for the advice. I've been looking there as well. I'll keep looking!

@Kristen Ackley I'm not seeking a roommate, but some of the students in my program recommended Bellefonte as a nearby town in which to live––it's quiet, about a 10-15 minute drive, and there are other graduate students living there. You might also want to check out houses a tad bit east of Lionsgate apartments/that area of State College. It's an slightly older demographic according to the data I've seen, so finding a 2 bed/2 bath house may work there.
