Hi All-

In my desperate attempt to procrastinate more effectively, I have decided to start this thread. Very soon we will all have lots of news to post here, RIGHT?!

(Breathing heavily.)

Thereby I establish our very own sociological corner of joy.

it's terrifying to know that our futures will pretty much be decided beginning in three and a half weeks. i know a couple top schools start making acceptances at the end of Jan/very early feb.

I was actually wondering about that. Last year I applied to 4 schools and didn't hear back from any of them until late march (2 waitlists and 2 rejections). I'm hoping things will be better this year.

Does anyone know when we should start hearing from schools? I need to find something to keep me occupied until then.

Good luck to everyone!

do some searches for schools using the results page ("northwestern sociology" etc.) -- you'll see when some people received acceptances. i know that UCI and stanford announce end jan/first few days of feb.

I looked up all my programs yesterday and wrote down in my agenda when I should expect to hear from each of them. Crazy? Yes, the waiting is already getting to me!

Yeah, I did this too. So we can be crazy together. Good luck everyone!

Whoa but dude! Be careful, you may find yourself getting anxious over nothing by just putting one date in your planner.

At least mark off that whole week... better yet find out the full RANGE of dates of acceptances from the thingy, not just the first one posted, or you will likely find yourself unnecessarily upset by a few "rejections" that turn out to be tardiness (or just a different schedule from last year). I'm trying to do the opposite... not be aware of the dates other than somewhere mid Feb to mid March.... that way I won't feel specific anxiety, just the general creeping kind.

Oh, no--I put a range, like "early to mid Feb." And in cases when rejections seemed to go out much later than acceptances, I noted both. Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed.

I did the same thing. Yes, I am bit ashamed of it. It's useful when people ask me again when I am going to hear from schools - I have an answer ready.

For anyone waiting to hear from UPenn- I spoke with the secretary today. She said they received about 250 apps this year and will begin their evaluation at the end of January.

Ouch. I feel like I should start bracing myself for across-the-board rejections.

Yup, me too. I'm practicing saying "Do you want fries with that?" haha

Yeah, I'm working on an online TEFL/TESOL course this month to prepare for the job search I'll probably partake in come spring. Teaching English in a foreign country pays better than food-services, but it eats your soul in a similar way.

Really it ain't so bad... but find out about different companies before you go, because they're not all equally good (though in some places they're almost all equally bad). For the most part, I found my students have really appreciated me. Some creepsters.

Actually, what annoys me most is that as a Chinese-American, it's likely that I will be paid over 30% less than a white English teacher with the same credentials here in China. It's awful to be discriminated against in my homeland for being Chinese, and more than just a little ironic. But perhaps this is just more stuff for me to investigate when I finally get into that Ph.D program.

First time I applied I got accross the board rejections....things work out, I'm still in a masters program and planning to move to a PhD. Just have an ace in the hole...

Here's a fun story!

I just called a grad office to check on something odd that appeared on my web application status -- the assistant look through my file, said it's ready for review, and assured me there was no error. I said:

"Oh, great, so I have no need to worry then!"

"Well...you DO have a need to worry. Nothing is constant anymore, nothing is certain. There are plenty of reasons to worry!"

"Oh. Thanks."

Seriously? Seriously?? On the verge of adcom decisions, SERIOUSLY??

I don't mean to laugh at your misery, but thank you for making my day!

We all have a lot to worry right now.. we just don't need anyone reminding us how worried we should be

I have a question for people: Beyond general grad school web application status, have others received notification from the departments themselves that your applications are complete?. I have only received this from one school. Otherwise, nothing! Should I be concerned and take action, or do I just need to sit tight?

Thanks for any input!

I heard back from almost all of mine. Indiana actually sent me something a few weeks ago telling me that they had not received a transcript but their deadline isn't until the 15th.

Eeek. That's good to know, though not comforting!. I noticed quite few on these boards are applying to Princeton and Harvard Sociology. Have others received correspondence from the Soc dppt directly with regards to application status?

Yeah its funny, no one sees to be applying to smaller or less prestigious grad schools on this forum. Interesting...

That's not true, I was surprised actually at the variations of schools people are applying to. I am not sure anyone is applying to even three of the five schools I'm applying to. I think a lot of people are applying for the most elite programs... but people are also applying to a lot of other programs too. Three of my schools are USNWR top ten... and the other two schools are ivy league (ranked 11th and 20th), so I feel like I'm a pretentious prick only applying to only elite schools. Someone was just applying to Northeastern, I've seen CUNY and Brandeis up here a few times, I think Notre Dame, people are applying to a huge range of schools! I think people are being pretty good about applying to the right programs here, and not just to name schools. I've noticed very few people applying to Yale and Brown, for example. I'm surprised and impressed at how much homework people have done and stuff.
