newday123 Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) Fantastic news all around! Thanks for the reminder about checking/resetting my SPAM folder. Usually my SPAM messages are deleted automatically. So hopefully I haven't missed any acceptances because of this! I am curious what that would entail in this context.. Great to hear that! Will I see anyone at the open house in March? Do grad schools usually offer to pay for travels to admit weekends? Only some, I would imagine. Edited January 28, 2010 by newday123

Astronautka, I think it's not very likely that I can go. I'm working as an RA in Taiwan now. And thanks for everyone's congrats messages! Edited January 28, 2010 by tomi
JohnBom Posted January 28, 2010 Author Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) Congrats on the Temple interview, whoever that lucky one is! Edited January 28, 2010 by Astronautka
coffeeandtoast Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Yes, congratulations to everybody! This wait is making me really nervous though. I hope I get accepted or rejected soon. I can't make it until April 15th like this. I need my life back.
ineedcaffeine Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 I agree! I woke up at 4am because I dreamed that I got rejection across the board!
DeWinter Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 I agree! I woke up at 4am because I dreamed that I got rejection across the board! There's a superstition from (Asian country) that says that you'll get the opposite of what you see in your dreams. I also had a similar nightmare and I use this superstition for consolation.
myrrh Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 There's a superstition from (Asian country) that says that you'll get the opposite of what you see in your dreams. I also had a similar nightmare and I use this superstition for consolation. Yes, that's how we always say in Asia. So for the people having nightmares: it's good for you. And, everyone, I think we should think in this way: We are going to do PHD, which would be extremely challenging, and the several months by this fall would be the most comfortable time in the several years to come. Don't spend those time on anxiety. If you are not working, go to do anything you wanna do. Travelling, reading non-academic books or learn something you will never have time to learn in the future (such as cooking, perhaps). Or, according to my experience of MA program, you could also read some academic books not very related to your academic field - who knows when can you touch them next time. For those who are working: we could enjoy our normal life. The daily life of a PHD graduate student would be by no means "normal".
maximus82 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Congratulations to those who got into UT Austin. I was recently contacted by Duke to submit my writing sample (which is weird because they didn't ask for one in their application). Anyway, I take that as a good sign. What do you guys think?

risapiecees Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Hey everyone, Would either of the UNC admits be willing to share some details (who called, did they mention cohort size, how long they will be accepting people)? Has anyone else applied and not heard anything yet? (My application status still just says "submitted"). It seems strange to only have two acceptances posted, and that they are three days apart, but there weren't a lot of acceptances posted in previous years either, so maybe not a lot of grad cafe-ers apply to UNC Soc. Basically, I haven't heard anything yet, should I be worried? Thanks!
Romaniac Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Hey everyone, Would either of the UNC admits be willing to share some details (who called, did they mention cohort size, how long they will be accepting people)? Has anyone else applied and not heard anything yet? (My application status still just says "submitted"). Basically, I haven't heard anything yet, should I be worried? Thanks! Yeah, I was one of the UNC admits. Sorry I didn't say anything earlier. In my case, I was called by the professor whom I mentioned in my personal statement as someone I would like to work with. She told me they were offering me four years of financing, and that details would come in the mail next week, that they really wanted to have me on board, etc... She didn't mention anything about cohort size, but she did say she thought I was one of the first to be contacted, so there is still hope. She took about 20 minutes talking to me, so maybe they take their time in getting around to making the calls because they want to make sure that they have enough time to not be rushed or anything. Whatever the case, good luck to everyone who is still waiting.
coffeeandtoast Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Romaniac, Thank you so much for your willingness to share some of the details. My congratulations to you! Risapiecees, I have also applied to UNC. I haven't heard anything. My application status also says submitted and has not changed. My husband applied to UNC last year (different department) and he said he heard that those who were rejected were able to see that in their application. He was waitlisted, but I think he found out through an e-mail from one of the professors after the acceptances and rejections were sent out. Again, this may not be as relevant as different departments work differently. I was also a bit worried about the number of UNC acceptances posted last year, but if you see the on the UNC graduate school website, it shows that they made 20+ offers in the sociology department but only 11 of those accepted. So I guess there still may be hope. I don't see many people applying to UNC (at least here), which I found surprising, so hopefully only 20 of us applied and we can all get accepted Their number of acceptances may even be lower this year though if they are affected by the economic downturn. All of this is speculation, of course! The fact that last year's results show some acceptances being done via phone or e-mail confirms what Romaniac said above--that he was called by one of the professors he had in his Statement of Intent. My husband had that happen to him with Northwestern--they made phone calls to some candidates first at the beginning of the week and followed up with e-mails. He thought he was out for sure. Well, later on that week he received an e-mail with an acceptance and the same funding package as everyone else (as he later found out). Then, the phone call followed a few days later. Maybe it works that way with UNC--they take their time with their applicants for recruiting purposes. Let's hope for good news for both of us!
risapiecees Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Romaniac and coffeeandtoast, thanks so much for your information. And congrats on your acceptance Romaniac! I am going to try to stay hopeful until I am actually rejected. Good luck coffeeandtoast!
econsoc Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I got accepted by Wisconsin-Madison last week via official e-mail. Hoooray! No info on funding yet though. Does anyone else who got accepted know when and how we will find out about funding package offers, etc.? Thanks and congratulations to all who got in. JohnBom 1
maximus82 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Interview at IU. Does anyone have any tips? I am freaking out.

Does anyone else who got accepted know when and how we will find out about funding package offers, etc.? Thanks and congratulations to all who got in. Congrats! As far as I know, Madison does not offer many traditional funding packages. Most students are sort of left to fend for themselves. You need to click on the link in your email under the paragraph that starts with something like "I am sure that funding your education is a concern.." and read the info. I suppose they expect the admitted students to contact professors individually and negotiate. Interview at IU. Does anyone have any tips? I am freaking out. Wow. I didn't know they interviewed. When is it? I have one with Emory this week. I will be sure to get back to you with some tips.. I am also a bit nervous and really excited at the same time. Luckily, I already have one letter, so I have resolved to have fun and make it a good learning experience. Enjoy the ride on their dime:) Edited January 31, 2010 by Astronautka
smokeypup Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Interview at IU. Does anyone have any tips? I am freaking out. Hey. I am a current grad student at IU and had an interview last year. For those freaking out about not getting an interview invite, don't worry, they don't interview everyone on their short list. Only the ones who either didn't major in soc, or they have some questions about whether you are committed to a PhD or your interests (maybe the prof you listed is soon to retire). They mainly want to know that you know what soc is and is not, and that you are in it for the PhD (not just trying something out). It is very casual and the DGS is very cool. Just be honest. PS: IU is great!
realsoc Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I just got an acceptance email from UNC! (On Sunday morning, no less). Seems like different faculty are responsible for calling or email the students they are making offers too. The invite weekend in March, but doesn't include any help travel costs, which isn't great for me because I'm several states away.

Those visits can really make it or break it when selecting a program. I remember when we visited Northwestern, when my husband was accepted, and we absolutely loved it: the faculty, Evanston, etc. But then again, we ended up going to a completely different city that we had never visited before and we love it, so things work out in the end. Best of luck in the decision you make!

Can you ask them to find you a student host to stay with during the weekend? That way you will save on hotel costs. realsoc 1
