curufinwe Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 It was a phone call from Joe Rollins-the Executive Officer of the Political Science Department. I missed the call because I was in a meeting but his message said I was being extended an offer of admissions, he'd be back in the office next week, and I should call back to talk about the program. He also said I'd get the official offer next week, I assume through the mail but I don't know. I'll be turning it down even though the 4+ hour round trip commute from my apartment in NYC to Rutgers is going to seriously suck. Even though you2ll turn it down, can you ask what the funding is like? At this point, it is ridiculous to hope that they will accept me as well but it has been said they are usually stingy with the stipend.
curiousgeorge84 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Even though you2ll turn it down, can you ask what the funding is like? At this point, it is ridiculous to hope that they will accept me as well but it has been said they are usually stingy with the stipend. Last year when I talked to Eva Bellin, who I think you would be working with given your interests, she said the funding was not very good. I think the reason that most of the classes are at night is because most students work during the day, which might make it take longer to graduate. I think their top funding is $18,000 and not everyone gets it. After taxes that is not enough money to live in NYC without taking out loans or working. She also said the school makes students work really hard for their money, sometimes teaching 3 classes in a semester. I guess its good teaching practice though.

By the way, I don't know why you think it's ridiculous to hope they'll accept you. You have good stats and experience. Have confidence that things will work out OK:) I didn't see anyone else claim an acceptance so it's not like they sent out a whole bunch already. Just wait a little longer and I'm sure you'll be in somewhere for the fall.
gleeful_horror Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I received an e-mail this morning...It was from UA, not ASU Personalized or mass?
SBL Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 a couple of UCLA rejections have gone up on the results page. Anyone claiming? Given it's not even 8am there yet, seems slightly dubious. But you never know...

reader Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Anyone claiming the Johns Hopkins acceptance? I assume it's for theory.
sunseeker Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 a couple of UCLA rejections have gone up on the results page. Anyone claiming? Given it's not even 8am there yet, seems slightly dubious. But you never know... I claim one. It was a generic email obviously sent automatically- time sent 2.59am. Good luck!
curiousgeorge84 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 curiousgeorge, what kinds of side jobs do students get to pay for expenses. This could be a great opportunity for someone like yourself to become a barista. Haha. I'm not talking side jobs, I'm talking full-time professional positions. I know someone who went through the CUNY program and worked a full-time job and went to school. I actually work in university administration and when applying to CUNY I decided that if I were to attend I would probably keep my day job.
curiousgeorge84 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 curiousgeorge, what kinds of side jobs do students get to pay for expenses. blumenrat Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Any idea on when UCLA or Harvard are going to send out rejections!? I just need them to tell me "no" so I can commit already! I spoke to the people at Harvard GSAS about some other stuff today and asked about this as well. They said that decisions have been made and that letters are currently being sent out, and they'll all have been put in the mail by March 15th. Hope that helps!
Keller65 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 However, one of my students is a bottle girl on the weekends and makes $300-$600 in tips per night I googled this term and am afraid to ask what it means.
bassdude Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I googled this term and am afraid to ask what it means. OH! Wow... If this means what I think it means... I guess a girls got to make a living somehow...
curiousgeorge84 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 OH! Wow... If this means what I think it means... I guess a girls got to make a living somehow... I don't think it means what you think it means. If you don't mind working in a nightclub it's not bad at all. It's the high paid hostesses who work in the VIP lounge and get tables to buy very expensive bottles of alcohol. That's why the tips are so high.
ashtangi Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) Sorry ashtangi, I fear most guests of this forum are for PhD programs and can't offer much insight. i would anticipate that those in the professional forum would provide much more info. Oh my! I'm lost! I had no idea this was only for PhDs. My post did get me a PM from a SAIS Nanjing campus alumni though. Thanks for pointing me to the right threads gravityflier Edited March 5, 2010 by ashtangi
APGradApplicant Posted March 5, 2010 Author Posted March 5, 2010 Hey guys! Sorry I've been absent from the boards for a couple of days but I've been at UC-Davis on my first visit. It went really well and I must say that I was very impressed with their program! Anyhow, got my last acceptance today at (and I'm sure few here care as it's not a popular one) SUNY-Albany. On the off-chance someone has applied, however, I will definitely be calling them early next week to withdraw my application. FYI I found out over the phone but also apparently got a letter that was sent out on Tuesday. I hope everybody's staying calm as the admissions process finally winds down and the next step of choosing a program begins in earnest.

thatsnotmyname Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I'm glad Davis went well! Ditto! I hope everyone's visits are going well, I imagine that's why it is so silent around these parts...

Just wait a little longer and I'm sure you'll be in somewhere for the fall. With the rejections I already have, I'm pretty sure I won't get in anywhere this year. Stats are not the only thing that counts during this process, it is sometimes about luck as well. And as my mom often says, "if it rained apples, and only one of'em was a stone, it'd find our head to fall". And yeah, Eva Bellin is awesome and I had my eye on her, and Talal Asad, when I was applying there.
curufinwe Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I e-mailed Brown and asked this: "I applied to your phd program in political science for fall 2010. I was wondering... when does the committee start making decisions? And what is the medium of announcing the results, especially for the accepted candidates that live abroad?" This is the answer: "Decisions have not been posted for this program. You will receive e-mail notification when the decision is available."
gravityflyer Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Accepted to UCSB. Received a personal email this morning from the DGS, Professor Glasgow. Unclear about funding. He said my official package is en route via mail. At least I now have options!

I emailed Brown as well, and they said decisions would be mailed out in mid to late March. Like in the response they gave you, they did not indicate that decisions have not been completely made yet.... So I've given up hope, in other words. I really hope something pans out for you, though.

When I almost lost hope for gradschool, and had planned out what I was about to do instead, I was referred to the MA program in Chicago. It was ecstatic. Just have some faith!
curufinwe Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 I know how it feels. When I almost lost hope for gradschool, and had planned out what I was about to do instead, I was referred to the MA program in Chicago. It was ecstatic. Just have some faith! Not being a US or Canada or EU citizen, I do not think any program that is not fully funded would work for me, no loans available. Besides, faith is the least thing I need now, since my extremely religious dad has started the "god gives us what is good for us. maybe grad school wasn't good for you" talk
