billdozer Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Yeah and it sucks because we don't know what's going on behind the scenes. That's the worst part. I sent another program some addition writing samples they requested and I didn't hear back from them for two weeks. I emailed them to confirm they had received the materials and still no answer. Eventually three weeks went by so I called them and they were very short with me. I felt terrible because I didn't intend to bother them but I needed to make sure they received my stuff. This process is hard on both sides and unfortunately requires more patience on our part.

bbobear Posted March 9, 2017 Author Posted March 9, 2017 @Grad-school-freakout123 If I had to guess, I'd say they wanted people with a few years' work experience. That was most definitely the weak area of the application for me.

bbobear Posted March 9, 2017 Author Posted March 9, 2017 @Willwang I have lol. Got the rejection email this morning. Sucks, but I hope things went well for you
123abc Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 @Willwang i have not either, but based on some of these guys getting turned down with the qualifications they have - i have a feeling i'll be getting that rejection email soon
bobilu87 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Ugh...I got the rejection email as well. Anyone applied HCDE?

Compared to other programs MHCI+D at UW seemed to have the fewest opportunities for pure researchers to develop. I specifically mentioned in my SOP that I wanted to become a UX researcher and that design/prototyping were areas that I wanted improve to become a better researcher. I (personally) feel like other programs would provide better opportunities to study research techniques. Edited March 9, 2017 by siitrasn
bellis Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 @bobilu87 I applied to only HCDE and am waiting anxiously. Seeing the MHCID waitlist and rejections has got me browsing other HCI programs and looking at a game plan for next year. Gah.

Are they looking for purely designers?
Willwang Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 What were you guys majored in if you don't mind I am asking..
123abc Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I'm curious as to if they sent out all the wait lists and rejection emails, or if they are sending them out in waves
sqa Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 (edited) I'm sorry to hear about the rejections for MHCI+D For those who applied to HCDE, what area of specialization did you indicate -- research/design/engineering? Also, what category does your background fall into -- technical or engineering/social sciences/design? Or something else? For the latter, at an info session they mentioned trying to maintain somewhat equal proportions for admitted students, so now of course I'm freaking myself out and overthinking everything. I'm interested in research, and I have a social sciences background. Edited March 9, 2017 by sqa
123abc Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 @sqa i'm pretty concerned too.. i have a business background and i have not even touched design!
