Flight to Open House canceled because of storm--what now??

So I have been looking forward to attending an open house at a certain school in Sunny California, my top choice, for about a month. All of a sudden this blizzard comes along, and before nary a snowflake has fallen, my flight is canceled. No make-up flights are available until Saturday, by which time the open house will be done. What now? Will this hurt my admissions chances? The only contact I've had with these folks is when a professor cold-called me to invite me to the open house; needless to say I was a nervous, inarticulate mess.

Has this happened to anyone else?

im in a similar situation:( im dont know the status of my flight yet but im very very worried about it. and the worst thing is this is not just a visiting weekend, but an interview weekend. its one of my favorite schools and i'd really hate to miss the interviews...

This SUCKS. Sorry I can't be more helpful. This just really, really sucks. They can't really fault you for this... it is completely out of your control.

I'm worried this might happen to me next week. I have one interview a week for the next three weeks. If you can go visit the school anyway and just stop by to see the professors you are interested in working with, open house or no open house, any personal interaction is probably better than none where you can demonstrate that you are a professional and sane individual. If they invited you out then they are probably interested and just need to know that you are a reasonable character who can hold a conversation, etc. You don't need an open house to demonstrate that and could even talk to them over the phone to do that (call them for a change). But I'd definitely go visit...make sure the school is just as impressive in person as it is on paper.

Thanks for commiserating, caput mundi.

My biggest concern is that they'll reschedule this interview weekend for another weekend that I have an interview--I had an interview lined up for the next 4 weekends, and one of them already involved rescheduling. I have practically no wiggle room until mid-March. I just hope it all works out, somehow.

My flight to CA has been canceled also. I did everything in my power to switch to another flight, and as of now, I SHOULD be able to make it to part of the event still. I've been keeping in touch with professors, letting them know my flight may get canceled, and my schedule has been completely switched around. Luckily they are very understanding. Hopefully it is the same for you!

Hi

So I'm assuming you were flying to UCSD? I'm headed there tomorrow as well, and I have no idea if my flight will be canceled. Either way, I'm sure they will be understanding about rescheduling or doing interviews over the phone/skype.

Actually, all may not be lost. Why don't you call the department and ask if you can still come on another day? I don't see why they won't accomodate you...... if they are somewhat understanding.

i woke up this morning to no snow whatsoever (it was supposed to start around midnight) so im slightly getting my hopes up for my flight (and my interviews of course).

I have the exact same problem....Interview is on Friday and there's currently an Epic Cocaine Battle going on outside my window. I also haven't left my house in nearly 1 week (working from home). FML.

so it turn out to be a lot less severe than the weather forecast said (in my area) so i should have no problem making my way out to the airport and flying to my first interview weekend. good luck to the rest of you!
