Would be so fun if this game become a complete fluke. 6-3 on fgs... 49ers miss 4 fgs within 30yards and Colin K breaks both arms after being sacked by his center.. Since the 49ers pissed off Alex Smith; he'll refuse to play, get traded to the jets for sanchez and then the 49ers relocates to Sacramento and becomes a d-league team to new 'sonics (yes we're talking basketball). 49ers are the NFL's version of the Wpeg Blue Bombers. Why Randy wants to play there beats me. I got really iffed when Harbaugh started to cry about that non-reversal call on the reception - reminded me of Adam Morrison..... Only thing that could be worse than this is that if the seahawks would have gone this far. USC uuuh.

Mixing Sociology: Public Policy and Organizational Behavior?

http://www.yale.edu/ciqle/PUBLICATIONS/Brueckner%26Mayer-Destandardization.pdf Herr Mayer at your service. and then: http://www.journals.elsevier.com/advances-in-life-course-research/most-cited-articles/ <- specifically the "now or later" (at the bottom) article and the "towards a new pattern of entry into adulthood" btw - I thought you economists had given up on rational choice theories? (sorry for hijacking this thread - life course makes me randy and raucous) -
Mixing Sociology: Public Policy and Organizational Behavior?
ohgoodness replied to vigilante's topic in Sociology Forum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_course_approach and then read this http://www.springer.com/social+sciences/book/978-0-306-47498-9 but you should really know better. It grew out of various major developments in various disciplines, especially hägerstrands time-geography. I hope you're not applying to Yale or UNC -
Had the same or rather - had a meeting with a POI and two days after - graduate office asked for more information about my transcripts. I'm an international as well so I took it as a good good sign.. Best of luck to ya

Any Swedes Out There? Gather Around for a Fika!
ohgoodness replied to PoliSwede's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Anxious is not the word anymore. I'm considering a vacation to Maine as to be located in the same time-zones... Am starting to regret that I did not apply for schools with early admissions, so that I would have heard things by now (Minnesota?!). A thing I was wondering - did anyone skip applying to schools requiring things to be sent by snail-mail ? I did and do not regret it at all. I know that another sociologist in my program (Demography/Sociology at SU) is applying to sociology programs this year as well so I think there are more of us around. -
Mixing sociology with anarchist studies on the side?

Seeing how this thread has developed. I just thought someone should post a link to Boltanski and the new pragmatics: http://nome.unak.is/nm-marzo-2012/vol-7-n-3-2012/54-conference-paper/349-the-economic-sociology-of-late-capitalism-the-contributions-from-boltanski-thevenot-and-chiapello-2 -
Uh time zones.... The 8 hours silence period, also known as my working hours, before the states wake up and go to work. Yesterday - One of my LOR's sent out private letters to her friends at the places I applied to. I received word that my profile (i.e. research interests/background not the rest) is exactly what they want but that the financial situation is taking it's toll on number of accepted students.

Applying for PhDs in Germany
ohgoodness replied to Seatbelt Blue's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Not your field at all but you could look at a call like this from the uni. at mannheim to see what they usually want in germany. http://gess.uni-mannheim.de/CDSS/Admission/CDSS_Application_Intake_2013.pdf A fair warning about germany and their system - alot of the good schools are located in woeful places, dredful cities, horrible regions. I would scout, scout, scout everything about the school/place but I even thought about going (this is from a Swede and my generation does not like Germany (excl. Berlin) so I could be wrong...) -

My current program (terminal ma) really pushes it's students to attend the better ones as to network, develop their research and push their names. If you look at Essex/GESIS then they are given by some of the leading names in their fields (Jenkins when it comes to multilevel event).

"While we out here, say the hustlas prayer If the game shakes me or breaks me I hope it makes me a better man Take a better stand Put money in my moms hand Get my daughter this college plan, so she don't need no man Stay far from timid Only make moves when ya heart's in it And live the phrase Sky's The Limit" and "You know very well who you are Don't let em hold you down, reach for the stars You had a goal, but not that many 'cause you're the only one I'll give you good and plenty" leading up to: "We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us No heat, wonder why Christmas missed us Birthdays was the worst days Now we sip champagne when we thirst-ay Uh, damn right I like the life I live 'Cause I went from negative to positive And it's all... " You know who

Not to be mean or anything but you should account for the inside-track when applying to universities in Sweden. It is very often that phd calls here are made with certain students (whom usually already are working within the program) in mind. It is certainly the case at Stockholm for alot of programs.

I was bored. The final drop is the one person who got in from waitlist... "The plateau of death" we can call it. *Select sample (81 cases), few school (7), poor calculations (timing), based on 2013+2012

Congrats, congrats and congrats! Now relax, enjoy your time and see how things play out

Yeah good on whoever got in Go Gophers!! I just submitted my final paper for my MA so now I can spend all my time thinking about the future and what's in store.. From my understanding - UNC has sent out acceptances in the week to come (20th) and then Duke is followingly closely. After that UM-Amherst and Princeton come around 1-2nd Feb and then we get into the crazy period.

I can voice for Sweden and say that GPA is superfluous and would be considered uncouth and braggy. Swedes, however, frown upon these sort of things and like it more implicit (going to a good school or working for a good/famed company is the way of saying "look I have a 4.0 but why ever would I say that".) My CV contains all of my professional achievements. Employment, School, and Volunteering. There is, however, zero room for bragging as it is very very descriptive. The only thing that I would say is different is that you should be less pushy and direct in Europe but otherwise - your standards will transfer well. American or British spelling - meh.. Same language, different name.

I can just say that two of my LOR's are semi-retired (emertius at their old universities and now heading up new departments/centers) and they have been the best, best, best persons for helping me in my career. They comment bluntly on things, are very direct and straight, help me with decisions, are always willing to proof-read and network for me. It has led me to believe that most professors who go into semi-retirement (and not full retirement) are extremely interested in helping their students get ahead by writing letters and networking for them. I definitely do not think that age is a factor here - look more towards whether they have applied for a new funding or projects later or whether they still go to conferences etc. A better indicator of what lies ahead. How are their old students fairing? It's good to look at that.

I was really hoping that someone would know some summer schools in Asia/Canada/Latin America/Africa/Australia? (i.e. outside Europe/US . Googling these things gives me zero trustable info.

Best Schools For Race, Sexualityand Gender
ohgoodness replied to BlkGrlSoc's topic in Sociology Forum
A suggestion would be look at the boards of the most prominent journals within this field and see who is where. Looking at the main editors usually gives you someone who is well-established in the field and is likely to have created a "clique" at their department. Another suggestion would look at people well-versed in intersectionality and stratification. Lastly you could also remove the "race" and look at departments strong in gender and sex/stratification and make sure that they understand that you are bringing a strong interest/profile that will join sexuality and gender and the lives of african americans, which is a subfield to excel in. I said it before but Northwestern is a good place. Strong in gender and largely connected to social dimensions of Chicago. Big program with strenghts in all your fields (I have 0 connection to NW but yeah - i'm reppin 24/7..). I'm not gonna list people since that is rather redudant for such a big field. In the same vein - Rice is deeply entrenched in Houston (Kinder Institute, Hobby Center, Houston Survey,) with people who connect these issues. UCSB has a good rep, clusters on feminist studies and race, ethnicity, nation, and I always love what I read from Maria Charles. I could probably go on to list every major program in the states but really - this is such a large subfield where you could go anywhere and develop a niché suitable for your interests. I would just think about my favorite scholars and see who is connected to them. Otherwise look here: http://www.feministeconomics.org/pages/about-feminist-economics/editorial-board/ http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/socpol/editorial_board.html and then a rankings page: http://www.scimagojr.com/journalrank.php?category=3318
