  1. Try anyway. Most programs look for a "range" and really, 4 points is not that much! Besides, as the person above me said, it is totally possible for you to retake the GRE and raise your score in the next 9 or so months!
  2. Hm, I would say no (my undergrad had students apply for housing in February, before they knew if they were admitted or not just because space was so limited) but the 23 January thing seems like a good sign! It could be that you have been recommended for admission by your department and it has to now clear through the graduate school. That's a common next step. If you really want to you could probably contact your department. Tell them you want to fill out the housing form, but you haven't received a formal offer. Maybe they'll be nice enough to clue you in. And congrats!
  3. More interview resources! I listed a few above, and here are some more: 1. What You'll Be Asked on Your Graduate Admissions Interview (follow the links at the bottom to other relevant articles) 2. Applying to Graduate School: The Interview Process Speaking of interviews, has anyone had a school refuse to reschedule? I just got my 3rd invitation for Feb 7, and the school first told me I would have to come visit before then if I wanted an in-person interview, and then called me back and told me I would just have to do a skype interview! This school was in my top 3, so I am pretty bummed about it.
  4. Here is a good site. You can go to the archives and visit all the interview-related posts. Someone uploaded this powerpoint in another thread which I also found to be incredibly useful! Good luck, all! Report back after interviews and let the rest of us know how they go!
  5. I should add that both secretaries were very nice and told me the exact day of the interview and when decisions should be made/I should expect to be notified. They also asked if there was anything else they could help me with. They were very helpful! This has the added bonus of them maybe letting you know your status early, if they are aware of it. For example, one told me that interview invitations would go out later this week, but that I would be getting one and to tell her if it didn't show up by a certain date.
  6. I emailed the department/admissions secretaries for 2 schools: Hello, I applied to the PhD program in YYY at XXX for Fall 2014. I am in the middle of making travel arrangements to attend interview days at other campuses, and I was wondering if you are able to tell me both the interview date and when invitations might be sent out for your program? It would greatly assist me in making my arrangements. I hope this email has gotten to the right place. Thank you very much for your help! Sincerely, iphi
  7. I did it and everyone was very nice. In fact, it prompted an acceptance letter for me from one school! I still missed the 2-week mark for buying tickets though. Now all the prices went up. Also one school refused to interview me at another date even though they were the last of 3 schools (for that date) to get back to me! They were in my top 3, so yeah... avoid my mistakes and ask first!
  8. Given the Results Search, it seems as though they do phone interviews. Why don't you email (or call, that's somewhat more anonymous) the secretary and ask what their timeline is?
  9. Yeah, I ended up with this schedule: 6th: 1 interview in MA 7th: 3 interviews: CO, IA, IN 8th: 1 Admitted Student Day NC IA said I could reschedule any time, CO said no way they would reschedule me, and MA I am still waiting to hear back from. And NC said if I came that day (and only that day!) they would pay for everything, so...
  10. Ohio State has a large number of international students, and both the universty itself and the city of Columbus have a very active Chinese community. I have no idea about Tulane, but speaking as someone who has previously lived in Asia, I think it's a good bet that you would more comfortable with the community and lifestyle in the midwest (Ohio) than in the south (Louisiana). I would get some input with someone who is familiar with Tulane/New Orleans, though!
  11. Just received a phone call from my POI offering me admission at my top choice school. Ecstatic and astounded do not even begin to describe how I'm feeling!

Thank you all! This is my 2nd round of applications so I never dreamed this could happen!

      Late congratulations!!

  12. ETA: Nevermind, I just received a phone call from my POI at my top choice! It was not a mistake, I have been recommended for admission! Also, for MN111 and anyone waiting on Northern Colorado, they should be reviewing files Thursday and sending out interview invites around then. Their interview date is February 24.
  13. Maryland probably has a snow day, as they are in the DC area. Philadelphia and NY schools are shut too.
  14. Well nothing happens on the weekend, and doesn't seem to on Monday either. Things should be happening later this week. Or today if we're lucky!
  15. Well I have another question! I want to reschedule these, but I don't know if I will be invited to more interviews. I don't want to reschedule one for the same date as another! Is it ok to ask programs either when their interview dates are or when they will be sending out invitations?
  16. Thank you all for the advice! I think that I will have to reschedule the two I have not already RSVPed to. There's no point in being rushed, stressed and exhausted. Your point about seeing campuses on a "normal" day is also really valid. I'm also completely amazed that I was invited to this many interviews, so I certainly don't want to blow them off or act uninterested. I am beyond excited to visit each of them and think it's a very important step to deciding where you are going to spend the next half decade+ of your life!
  17. If you feel iffy about them, don't go. But try to make as many as you can, even if you have to reschedule some! Are you pretty confident about your chances at each one? That should certainly be a factor.
  18. I have two invitations for February 7, and one for February 6. They are in MA, IN & IA, so pretty far apart. I heard from one of the Feb 7 schools (IN) a week before the other two, so I have already accepted their invitation. I was hoping to attend the Feb 6 interview (MA) and then fly to the one I have already RSVPed to (IN). The problem is, between the flight times and the shuttle service for the trip from the airport to the school I wouldn't arrive until exact time the interview starts! And that's barring any delays. So I would be flustered, lost, exhausted and have to show up with my luggage. Basically a terrible situation. So my question is, how big a deal is it to reschedule an interview? I don't want the schools to think I am not interested, or for my chances to go down because I couldn't attend the visit day. The school whose invitation I have already accepted does group interviews, so it is very important that I be there. However, the other two schools have individual interviews and a tour; pretty basic, and (hopefully) easy to make up! So what's the etiquette on this? How do I reschedule gracefully? Can I mention other visits? Does it make me seem less interested or lower my chances at all? I know that talking to/going out to dinner or staying with grad students is an important part of the process. I won't get that if I miss the visits, but I don't know what to do.
  19. Nope! Will let you know if/when I do. From the Results Search it looks as though we might have a few more weeks to wait? Most of the entries are marked February. You can call/email the school and ask when they're sending out invites, though! I agree with MN111. You should write the school back, apologize and explain your situation!
  20. Thanks! One of my schools (actually happens to be one of my top choices) requires you to be there on that day because they do group interviews, so that one is a no-brainer. I will reschedule the other interview I was invited to that day. I am more concerned about getting 800 miles in 12 hours between interviews for Feb 6 & 7. It seems silly to reschedule two interviews for the sake of one. But I am going to be a ball of stress trying to make it, especially on off-peak hours when the school is 1 hour+ from the nearest airport.
  21. 3 interview invites for Feb 6 & 7, in 3 different states. What to do?!

      Ask about rescheduling.

I'm having similar problems. I just asked one school to consider rescheduling, but they are only having one interview weekend:-( Now I have to attend during the recruitment weekend for one school and the other during a normal week when they're not recruiting. This might not be such a bad thing, because you'll get to see how the department acts when they aren't putting on a show. Good luck:-)

  22. OK guys, I got another interview invitation this afternoon, but my happiness is quickly giving way to stress! The interview dates I was invited to are: February 6, February 7, and February 7! All in 3 different states! What do I do?! Why does everyone schedule on the same weekend?
  23. Wow, that's AMAZING!!! Congrats! They must really like you! I wouldn't worry too much about the EdS, I think they're on a different schedule. Our app deadline was December 1, and based on the Results Search I honestly didn't think I'd hear back from them for about a month!
  24. Ha, yeah there was a school which specifically told me to contact POIs, but by the time I read it (it was in the application) it was the week before the application deadline and I felt weird about how late it was, so I ignored it... I'm probably not getting in there. However, it is completely feasible for you to be accepted somewhere where you didn't have contact with the POI. Really, it's not a huge deal. Most of them just say "look forward to reading your application" or something like that anyway, it doesn't really give you an edge unless you have some crazy connection.
  25. They must not know that you are in Russia! I can't imagine they would make you fly there. You're right that it seems completely unfair. You should ask for a Skype interview - that way you can still have visuals on each other!
