  1. Everyone in my program except me got it. And everyone told me I had a stronger application and had my shit together better. I feel like poo. Signing off. Message me if you need to file a report for trolls.
  2. I'll stay on until results are up to make sure the trolls don't invade during this campout. Remember to be positive, even if you don't get it (I know it sucks and you want to take it out on someone). Good luck everyone!!
  3. Grad students are neurotic creatures, aren't we?
  4. Your award status from last year will have little effect on your award status this year. You will get new reviewers and be compared against a different group of applicants. However, you can still think positively that your application was liked last year and this year's can only be an improvement. But a lot of the GRF really is luck in who your reviewers are. This can be frustrating, because you feel like it's unfair. But at the same time, if you don't get it, you can also attribute some of that to bad luck. I feel like it's one of the few cases where you can really say a lot of the result is luck based (of course you have to have some merit behind it, so I'm not disregarding that). This is something to keep in mind as the results begin to come out. Everyone keep it positive and remember to take a nap if you're going to stay up late to wait for results.
  5. I missed something. Why do we think it's coming out tonight?
  6. Don't feed the trolls. You have the option to block all content from users who you find annoying. Remember that the outcome of the GRF does not determine your value as a scientist or as a person. It means that 3 people who most likely don't know you, who happen to be in a broadly related field, did not like your application as much as others. There is a lot of bias and luck, but it is also something to be proud of if you do get it. Just keep it positive.
  7. I agree with this. You would need to still go through the application process unless you had a specific lab that was actively recruiting you and had made special arrangements. And more than anything, if I was on whatever committee decides if you can transfer, I'd be concerned about someone who leaves a program a year in. You need to have really good reasoning other than winning the GRF.
  8. Ditched an important meeting to get my partner the last limited edition Majora's Mask 3DS within an hour's drive. Worth.

That's got to be an exciting present to get! Hope they enjoy it, and that the meeting wasn't too critical.

  9. Everyone in this thread when the notifications don't come out today.
  10. I want my neighbors to get kicked out. I'm so tired of them. I don't want to hear your TV shows every day.

      No idea. Something in Chinese.

  11. As the end of the season comes to a close, remember to take a deep breath and do something not academic to relax.

      Wise words, Mono! :-)

  12. Every professor I talked to asked if I was applying for the GRF, and it seemed like not applying was a big taboo. It's a free opportunity for funding, prestige, and writing experience. And withholding that you are applying also seems weird to me. It can only help you, so why not?
  13. Hey everyone! I haven't lurked in the ecology applicant threads in a while, but it's good to see that some of you got into some great programs. For those of you still waiting, ecology programs are notorious for taking their sweet time getting back to you, so keep crossing those fingers! And if you didn't get into a program you were certain that you would, more often than not, it was that someone else had a better research fit (so don't take it personally). The ecology application process is such a weird animal in the grad application world with more factors to consider than I thought possible, so consider it an accomplishment to have gotten through unscathed.
  14. I want the GRF, because I want the ability to control where and when I do my research more. The large stipend (>$10k more than I would make on a research assistantship) allows me to do just that. I can work anywhere at any time with that kind of money. Oh, I want to fly out to Costa Rica to do some pilot studies every other month? Easy with the GRF. I want to visit my long-distance partner every month? Easy with the GRF. Money can't buy happiness, but it can alleviate stress and make our lives a bit easier as grad students. I can live comfortably on my current funds, but I am restricted, and I want freedom.
  15. Peanut butter. I cannot stand peanut butter and regularly went hungry at lunch instead of eating the PB&J that was offered by the school/camp.
  16. My neighbors are loud to the point that I can't sleep even with headphones on and management won't do anything. I'm tempted to just call the cops because my passive aggressive notes and reports aren't doing anything.

      should have call the cops.

I would. Just make sure it's after the time when local laws say people need to start shutting up when you call (I think it's 10pm where I live). I'm sorry management isn't helping.

Please call the police. Sometimes that's the only way for them to wise up.

  17. I like having a partner who isn't in academia. He's a music education major (which is actually a lot more time intense than I previously thought), finishing his Bachelor's degree and teaching crednetials. He is curious about my research and genuinely thinks it's interesting and tries to understand it, but I don't have to deal with nitpicking the minutia with him. It keeps my work/school life very separate from my personal life, and I like it that way. I am not someone who can think about my research 24/7. I need to have specific times I work on my research, and then I ignore it when I have my relaxing time. But, if he wasn't interested in my research at all, I think that would be very difficult. Research is 50% or more of our lives, so it's important to have someone who can support you through that and be interested in what you're doing outside of your personal life.
  18. Asking my advisor if I can complete a year of my program from another state! Wish me luck!

I got permission! It's going to be a while to work out the details, but I'll be living with my partner while he finishes his degree. I might fly out for parts of spring and summer next year to work on some field work though.

harumph. Perhaps the saddest thing is the world is leaving it before having ever truly loved...?

  21. Ignore the trolls and keep the conversation productive. I have removed the post. : ) Notifications should be out within the month. Good luck everyone.
  22. I was surprised at how much my perspective on "needing a PhD to be happy" changed once I got here and saw what it would get me. I still really want one, and am motivated to get one; but I've also realized that there are many things in my life that are priorities over my degree, if need be.
  23. Again, if you're looking for a simple apartment, I recommend 2900 Place. It's affordable and the management is super nice. You can walk downstairs to ask a question and get an answer on the spot (as opposed to email or across town offices). It takes me maybe 10 minutes to get to my office, even in traffic. Covered parking. Community bbq events. Pets allowed. Online automatic rent payments. It's really a grad student haven. It's student-only housing, but the office is strict about noise restrictions, so there isn't a lot of partying. Edit: Although I have been complaining a lot recently about my noisy neighbors, it appears to be just them, not a habit of the complex. Maintenance did send someone up to complain to them at 2AM on my behalf too.
  24. I lost all almost all of my friends. I feel completely lost without a support system to fall back on. It's a struggle to get out of bed every morning, not knowing what the future holds, if anything matters, or if anyone cares.
  25. My life is a Nicholas Sparks novel. They have happy endings though, right?
