Well, I think that's dumb. I scored a 5 on the test, placed out of the intro to psych class, and now am graduating with a respectably high GPA in my psych major. Now that AP courses have to have their curriculum approved to be called AP, it seems a bit silly. If they made their Intro to Psych classes wait a certain number of months after finishing the class to take the placement test, how many of them would also fail, I wonder?

Actually, I'm not. All but one of my schools are in very expensive places to live, so I find it too depressing to look at housing prices. I'd rather be in denial about that until AFTER I get an acceptance. Because I still want that acceptance.

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
RubyBright replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
I would have asked if he knew because he was one of the rejected ones one year... -
(I'm sure your girlfriend appreciates that. ) I was excited for Monday. Then I realized that it's a holiday and all of my schools are closed. Now I can be excited for Tuesday!

I hate that I THINK I was rejected from one school, because I wasn't sent an interview invite, but I don't know for sure, because my application status hasn't changed. I just wait and wait. This is like being told at the end of a bad date, "... I'll call you."

If application decisions were only done through Amazon, we could get free two-day shipping and know within 48 hours. I'll just sit here and look wistful...

Good luck, PhDreams, and let us know how it goes! None of my schools give out much information about when they'll meet/make decisions, so I just check every day... multiple times a day.

Which minor to accompany my major?
RubyBright replied to mind.is.everything's topic in Psychology Forum
I would also recommend minoring in CS. My lab mentor told me that they generally have one programmer in the program at a time, and he/she is very valuable. It would really help both a.) your grad school prospects and b.) your future job prospects. -

Isn't that better? My mother thinks that I can have children DURING my PhD program. -

It's not how many people you tell, it's who you tell. Overall, I received more commiseration and empathy when I wrote on Facebook that I was in the middle of grad madness than when I told my family. The advantages of being friends with academics? Maybe I should have just broke it to my family when/if I was accepted somewhere... -

Even though I'm applying to psychology programs, I'm actually a double major, and spent more time devoted to the first major before I realized that what I really wanted was in the psych field. So here I am, applying to psychology PhD programs with what I consider a solidly average application, which isn't the best for PhD admissions. The catch is that in my other major, I had a perfect 4.0 in the program, wonderful professors who were enthusiastic about my work, and a good body of work experience. All I can think is that if I had applied to programs in THAT field, I would have had a much easier time in the application process. But I'm also committed to seeing psychology through... argh. Anyone else taking the more pig-headed difficult approach?

Any human factors applicants out there?
RubyBright replied to RubyBright's topic in Psychology Forum
I'm kind of surprised that there aren't more HF people, actually. It seems like a good place for the more technologically-minded - that's how I got into it. -
What would you do if you were me? (Living at home and finding a job)
RubyBright replied to Tubulin's topic in Waiting it Out
I would suggest you find a local retail job. It's NEVER a bad idea to earn some money and save it for later, especially if you may be in a grad program soon! Plus, working will give you something productive to do to take your mind off of the waiting game. I wish you all the luck in the word, Tubulin. -

Ahhhh! Sorry, I'm excited to know that I'm not alone. I was looking over the GradCafe results for the schools I applied to, and going back to 2006, only two people posted about the human factors program at my top choice school. I feel like I have very little information to work off of regarding when to expect to hear from the departments.
