HAHAHAHAHA. Hilarious. Oh that just made me think of three other things.. At my birthday party, I offered one of the guys a drink called "Sekt", but apparently I was prounouncing it in such a way that it sounded like I was asking him if he wanted some sex.... At one point I explained to my host mom and 16-year-old host sister what the slang "blue balls" meant. I don't remember why I explained it, but it was hilarious. Another time, my host mom took me to the palace of an old prince that lived in their town. As we were walking by this modern looking cafe near the palace, my host mom points out these weird looking modern chandeliers/light fixtures and said "Look! Those look like condoms!!" Not really a misunderstanding, but hilarious nonetheless. I LOVED my host mom. I will have to try and visit her

Hahahahaha. At least she caught herself! I would probably say something stupid like that and never realize people were laughing at me

Haha, for some reason I think I was thinking it was more like.. in between the Ukraine and Kazakstan, but that's just more Russia, isn't it? I had a general idea, but my my spatial reasoning has been always been weak and I can never really mentually visualize maps very well .. so.. geography always takes a beating too. Edit: Spatial. Spelling, also, is not my forte.

-
Haha, I think we all figured as much! I know I was making frantic phone calls when I found out!! Congrats again!

Didn't Poland hear today too? Maybe it really is getting close, CrystalDee! Let's hope so!!!!

That's what I thought, but I couldn't remember exactly where Estonia was, so I didn't want to jinx it :l i've heard about this thing called googling, though..
-
Sweet!! I forgot about looking there

AhhH! Awesome awesome awesome! Where are you going?

I can't see the link, unfortunately. That is a tough decision.. I don't know what I would do, I would definitely be tempted to just go and do it. I guess, if you think about, it what's a year? You are going to put your PhD off a year if you get a Fulbright, so what difference does it make WHY you are putting it off!! It always seems like the people I have known to get their Phd's get them later in life, so it sounds like you are already ahead of the game!! If you go teach Zumba in Croatia (where?? If anywhere near Zagreb), I might just have to try and take a class with you if I get to visit my family! I have family near Mala Buna, are you familiar with that city? I still feel so incredibly lucky to have been able to meet them; the American side of the family lost touch with the Croatian side when my great grandparents died, but my dad found some cousins online, and I was able to go meet them while I was in Germany. It was like something out of a movie! Given what I have seen of the landscape and the country, I can't blame you for wanting to go back! I seriously considered applying for an ETA there instead of Germany, but I figured I would have a better shot with Germany. They offer more ETA spots and I speak the language (relatively..), so it seemed like an obvious choice for me! I wish your choice were more obvious for you, but lets just hope you get the Full Grant, and you don't have to make that decision anyway

Okay good. Well, at least for you. I agree though. It is really crappy that they did that....
-
God, I probably would have gone into a Hulk Smash RageTM and broke everything in my sight...so kudos for staying calm! And no, not illogical. That was also my thought process.
-
That's exactl how I felt right before I found out
-
Who says ya can't still? Just get contacts and meet up with some of the people on this board once you are there!
-
THat's a good idea, I forgot about teh FB group. Those were the two I emailed, but I just wanted to make sure that I was right :B
-
Also, if there are an ETA's around other than I, it is my understanding that we do NOT get a visa prior to departure for Germany, and that we will get said visa once we are there. Is this your understanding, too?
-
35 days?! Really is that it?! OMG THAT'S PRACTICALLY TOMORROW /scarcasm
-
Hey German ETA's I want to make sure I sent myh acceptance to the right people, so I don't have a mini heartattack. Can you tell me who you sent your acceptance to? Thanks!!
-
Wait, is that what you were applying for?! I mean, at least you are applying for Estonia, so that would make a difference either way, right?
-
Bahahahahahah. hilarious. Makes you sound so misogynistic. LMAO. Maybe it doesn't come across so strongly in China, but it probably does some.
-
I've tried Duolingo... I did it for a little while, but I was not too impressed. Maybe I should try the higher levels, though.
-
Wow, that's hella shitty... After you spent all that time applying. You would think they would figure that out BEFORE the application process began and let applicants know then....
-
Awesooomeeee! You were an alt for the Fulbright, weren't you? I'm so glad to hear you got the Whitaker!!!! Congrats!
-
Yeah, you do have to just stop woryrying about it being gramatically correct and just hope people understand what you are saying!! Once you get over the fear, it all starts coming together so nicely! Mistakes can be so hilarious, anyway! When I was an exchange student, my host family had a big birthday party for me, and I had imbibed quite a bit(they provided TONS of beer!!!) I was helping my host mom put dishes in the dishwasher and I drunkenly told her that there were no more seating places left in the dishwasher for the dishes. She had a good laugh about that. When I first got to Germany, I was looking for facewash. I must have confused the hell out of the drug store workers, because apparently I was asking people for history water instead of face water, (as it is directly translated) because the words for face and history are pretty similar. Those types of mistakes amuse me to no end!

It has four: Nominative, accusative, genitive, and dative. Shit.. six? I'll shut up now
