I got into both of my top 2 schools - with a fairly generous scholarship to Marquette.  I'm waiting to hear about funding from Rush (my first choice), but it is such a relief to know that I will definitely be starting graduate school in the fall.

I didn't get in anywhere last year and I applied to far less competitive schools, so just in case anyone is losing hope - chin up!  I'm certain that completing all my pre-req / undergraduate work at USU is what pushed me over the edge, so there is always another way to get where you want to be.

...and the letter was waiting when I got home.

Waitlisted - which is better than not getting in, but I am still a little bummed that there's still a few more weeks ahead before I can actually make any concrete plans for the rest of the year.

Nothing in the mail from Saint Cloud today.  It made me glad that I didn't stalk the delivery person around the neighborhood until she got to our house, which was my first inclination.

I make no promises about tomorrow, though.

I applied to the University of Minnesota & Saint Cloud State University.  Considered University of Wisconsin, River Falls but they have a separate admissions process for people who are out-of-field - and successful completion of the pre-req program does not guarantee placement in the masters program.  I know that this isn't uncommon, but since both the UMN and SCSU give full acceptance to out-of-field candidates (with the understanding that it then becomes a 3-year program, with the first year spent completing pre-reqs), I decided not to apply.

The U's deadline was on January 7th & SCSU was on February 1st.  I submitted both on January 5th, so I've just been patiently going crazy since then.  I anticipate hearing from the U in about a week and a half, SCSU sometime in the second week of March.

I did get a (very thin) letter from SCSU this Monday - when I saw it was only a single sheet, I fell to pieces, thinking it could only mean one thing.

It was a letter (sent via snail mail) to let me know that my application was complete (it had been for a month!) and under consideration.  *headdesk*

    interviewing tips, from dogs:

    don't be too formal.

don't be too casual, either, and definitely get lots of rest the night before.

talk yourself up, but don't try to be someone you're not.

don't forget: strong, engaging, open body language is important!

a little personal touch to the old "skirt and blouse"/"blazer and tie" look never hurts, but don't get too crazy.

no matter what you decide to wear, a smile is the most important accessory!

Definitely, midnight streetlight - I know that a message from you was the first time I felt really welcomed (and it seems like you've done the same for almost everyone in this SLP forum).  Coming from out of field & not knowing anyone else in a similar situation - it meant a lot.  If you're ever in Minnesota, I owe you a cup of coffee.

I still have two people in my head - one who is sure I'll never get in anywhere & one who is tentatively hopeful I'll be starting my career as an SLP in August.  But I'm with you guys - the waiting is the worst, especially now that plenty of results are rolling in.  At least it should be done (for the most part) in a month.  Then the good stuff starts.

Yeah, in the words of my sister, "I didn't like walking through Riverside alone at night, but I've done it . . ." Sometimes, you will be able to find some very cheap housing in and/ or near Riverside, but there is a reason for that. Riverside isn't the most dangerous area in MNPLS but it isn't the best place to live either.

You should be able to find a similar space in a safer neighborhood with just as much or more personality. If you want to be close to campus, try Dinkytown or Stadium Village. Even if you are going for the Social Sciences and will be spending most of your time on the West Bank, there are shuttles running all the time across the river and the walk is only a few mins. and in the bridge is covered (for those cold winter days and nights).

All of this being said, Minneapolis, unlike most other Big Ten cities is a major metro area and you should be self-aware and careful. I've never had any sort of problem living in the Twin Cities, and I think it is a far nicer area than a LOT of other places in the country.

The standard of living is high, the art is fantastic, and the people are friendly. It is good to be a Gopher!
