  1. Advice on....? Questions to expect? Questions to ask? Dress? My insight would be that if it's the day before you should be relaxing. I'm sure you've been preparing. Good luck!
  2. I would think it'd be best to bring as much (strong) variation to the table as possible.
  3. In ANDS! defense, I interpret it similarly, based on the provided articulation. Nevertheless, ug classes can be absurd at times (as can grad courses). If you find it to be a waste of time then I would pursue the other course and work hard. I assume by your concern regarding your standing that you aren't performing well. (ANDS! probably also linked this to the urgency of the question in relation to avoiding an upcoming assignment.) If this is, in fact, a concern then you will need to decide whether you can manage the heavy course load.
  4. If you want to be at a top program you better be prepared for a competitive environment. If you want to be with the top dogs then go with Scripps. That being said, if you feel that Columbia suits you better, then you have your answer.
  5. Indeed, this might damage your reputation. I would find this highly unprofessional. Yet, not having the paper finished and thus submitting a sub-par piece is also unprofessional. You're between a rock and hard place. I hope you make it work. Good luck.
  6. Good luck to everyone this week :D

      You as well! Fingers crossed!

  7. Unfortunately there is nothing that we can say here. It (as with most things here) really depends. Depends on where you are on the list. Depends when the person you'd be replacing declines their offer. There should, however, be a deadline by which accepted candidates must notify their respective departments. For my programs that tends to be the middle of April. If you are, in fact, interested in these programs, be sure to contact the department to express your excitement about the possibility to be part of their program and your desire to remain on the waiting list.
  8. I bought a stack of GRE prep books, maybe 5 separate books. Work with the reading sections and get a feeling for the types of questions asked and, more importantly, the types of answers they are looking for. You aren't alone. Plenty of people ace the vocab stuff and slip up on the reading. Of course, note cards are great for vocab. For most people 1.5 months doesn't cut it. I consider myself to be a poor test taker (although most people say that). I studied for about 8 months, almost every day. I will say that if you feel like you've studied hard then adding at least 4 points isn't going to be easy.
  9. Know yourself (CV and SOP) and know the program. Have some questions ready for them as well.
  10. I would ask your advisor if she'd be willing to write a letter. Typically, they will find a way to say no if they can't write a decent one.
  11. I survive on chips and protein shakes.
  12. This profile doesn't tell us much, and these questions are usually impossible to answer. But I'm getting the impression that you find yourself competitive. So you are probably right. A top 20 school should be completely doable. And I agree, make that SOP shine.
  13. If you are concerned about the Quant then retake the GRE. Given your pursuit of a top 10 school, I would. A point or two on the Verbal would also help your cause.
  14. I'm a bit confused. Why would the graduate school review admission after a department?
  15. You're on the right track. First, I'd talk to some profs in your field and get a survey of programs as well as some possible feedback regarding which programs might be a good fit for your intellectual interests AND aptitude. You need to know a good program for you vs. a long shot or 'safety' school. I would also do exactly what you're doing. Get a list of all the programs in your field and check out their websites. Do they have faculty that work with your interests? If so check out the work of these profs. Could you see yourself working with them? Of course, be sure to make contact with them. In addition to getting an idea of program rankings, find survey ranking online. Good luck.
  16. What does this have to do with subcultures, i.e. marginalized (subaltern) groups within a larger prescriptive (or liminal) space?
  17. As early and often as possible!! You do not need to be published to present work.
