  1. I think you did the right thing. That's a tough position to be in. I would try to email again, if not call.
  2. I'd call the graduate secretary on Monday morning.
  3. Hermoine goes there!!!! It's an Ivy and yes, some programs aren't top notch. Some are. It depends entirely on your field. I applied for German
  4. Check the results section here. Check the departmental websites.
  5. I did not submit my scores to Oxford. Your verbal is solid. The Quant and AW are a bit low. It's up to you, but I agree, those who choose to submit their GRE scores are probably in the high 90s on each.
  6. That length typically doesn't include notes/bib. But if you're concerned simply ask the department.
  7. I didn't submit my thesis. Always submit your best work.
  8. I agree completely. I would also simply ask the programs which of these options they would prefer.
  9. In my personal opinion LORs from grad students is a very bad idea. Your parents would write "very strong" letters as well. It's not just the content, but the source as well. You must understand how this will look to adcomms. Regardless of how strong they are they will carry very little weight. I highly recommend reconsidering. Submitting two (of 3!!) letters from grad students is a bit suicidal. Is there anyone else? Even a professional rec? Do you have time to strengthen relationships with current profs??
  10. If they do interviews then yes, it's necessary.
  11. Um... of course they matter! Is this a serious conversation? -Reputation within the department -Funding opportunities -Annual reports -Departmental awards -Letters of rec for grants, etc. Those people will take this into consideration -Recommendations for post docs or jobs (!) -Applying for any sort of grant, study abroad, etc. - anything that requires a transcript (what if you apply for PhD after MA?)
  12. 1 out of 7, from a school that you didn't anticipate acceptance. Why would you feel hopeless? Don't let the anxiety get the best of you. All you can do is wait. Stick in there.
  13. I believe most psych programs have some sort of interview process and then narrow it down from there. Not positive though.
  14. Definitely call. It will save (possibly) precious time. I called and/or emailed all departmental secretaries anyways. Just to make sure all of my documents were in.
  15. It's not so much that grad programs don't want to accept undergrads from their institution. It's more an issue for you. It's generally assumed that getting degrees from varying institutions is best for exposure to multiple scholars, methods, frameworks, etc. This is more a concern for people remaining in academia. That being said, people do it. It shouldn't be a problem. Honestly. Especially considering your nice numbers. Don't stress about it.
  16. if you're certain then withdrawing may end up helping the second department anyways. they don't want to go through the trouble if they don't have to.
  17. I'd cut it. Their impression of you is important, and you have to understand the system. I'm a bodybuilder and have to dress myself very carefully for interviews, conferences, etc - any first-time professional environment. I dress to wash out my physique. I'm very big, but unfortunately it's better to simply look huge than actually muscular. It puts a lot of academics off. I'm not ashamed and it's who I am, but there are rules here. Save the disheveled prof look for when you're a prof (at least until you're in)! Just my 2 cents. Best of luck.
  18. YES. I knocked a few schools from my list due to this. A meaningful response can make a world of difference.
  19. I began publishing as an MA student. As long as they read it blind and the paper is, in fact, publishable it's no big deal. But these schools will typically only be impressed by top journals. To some extent I agree with preparing early for the pursuits of scholarship, but that doesn't mean that it will be impressive to everyone. It's hard to know what advice to give without a clear picture. Your choices are certainly top programs. Should you have a more broad range of schools? You said improve your GREs "substantially." I take this to mean that they are very low. This is problematic. One POI said you had a strong SOP. I would wait a few weeks and see if any programs are willing to help you understand why your application was not successful. GRE? Writing sample? LORs? CV? Transcripts?
  20. Perhaps to allow time for the program to contact candidates? Either way, I would expect that you would have heard from them if it were positive. BUT the online systems are useless. Good luck!
