  1. I think it's up to where you see yourself. What fits best. For me, I'm not too concerned about friends, for example. The only con you've listed for the smaller program might not even be accurate. And depending on who you want to work with at the larger program, you might receive just as much attention. The competitive nature of a program should always be a factor. Are you competitive? Can you compete for opportunities? Also keep in mind that if you are competitive then it might benefit you being in larger, more competitive program. Is there a difference in course offerings? It's all about fit.
  2. Don't freak yet. You never know what might happen!
  3. Would you have decent chances of being accepted into another program?
  4. that's pretty lame.
  5. Oh my. That is impossible to answer. A couple of my top questions: To what extent does the program support scholarship (conferences, pubs, etc)? Graduation times? Placement record (if not known). Congrats!!
  6. Is this a one year taught course? It would also depend on your plans after the MLitt. St. Andrews is a great school. Would you continue there? Continue back in the States? Seek employment? Certainly a MLitt isn't a MPhil. I would think it's value would depend on who's judging it.
  7. I, like many of you, agree that entitlement and (perceived) elitism are part of our Eros. However, I also believe that the idea of an 'elite education' speaks to a certain polarity of myth(os).
  8. Do you have any courses in general film studies? Speak any additional languages? Also, it'd be best to submit a (strong) writing sample that displays an aptitude for film analysis. I was also looking into a few film programs.

    Chances

I think you'll absolutely want to bring those scores up, especially the Quant. Keep in mind, everyone has a "great GPA, LOR, and SOP." You don't want that silly GRE keeping you from remaining competitive. BTW, props for pushing through your difficulties!!
  10. If programs aren't paying for your visits then I would narrow down the field and only check out my top choices, but it's up to you.
  11. You still have plenty of schools left. You just gotta hang in there and see what happens. Good luck!
  12. Typically the list would be ranked. It's more of a waiting game. Not much you can do, beyond informing the program (once) that you are excited about the possiblity, perhaps that it remains your top choice, etc.
  13. That's for you to decide. Is money tight for you? Is this one of your top choices (which it sounds like it is)? Have you heard from other programs? It's hard to decide to spend the time/money to visit w/out knowing about funding.
  14. I only sleep with people in the humanities.
  15. Ah, that makes sense. Again, not attending shouldn't be a big issue.
  16. Is this a serious question? We can barely answer this question when it's program specific.
  17. Maybe a difference in schools? I'm in the $2000 range, including the GRE (twice) and mailing additional LORs and materials to all the schools.
  18. Have you tried to talk to the prof and exlain your situation? Ask for a possiblity to make up the time missed?
  19. Why do you need a Visa? Either way, a video conference should be fine. Explain your situation to the department.
  20. I can't imagine you'd be accepted for taking class A instad of class B. Is it not possible to take all 3? orgo, psych, and neuro?
  21. I agree completely with jmarti37. A brief email thanking them for the pleasant visit which has led to your exploration of Somali.
  22. I fear you'd be spreading yourself too thin.

    Gap Year Jobs

Is it too late to apply to one year fellowships? Something that carries some weight on your CV, in addition to experience?
