  1. PhD Pure Math at Florida Atlantic University. Wife and I are very excited.
  2. Just like everyone else, apartment/duplex hunting. My wife and I are flying down in June to meet up with a realtor who is going to show us a bunch of potential places in our budget/area that we want to live. We'll spend the week filling out a bunch of applications to try and get preapproved, and then about a month and a half later one of those places will have an open 2 bedroom apt ready for us. Also, I think we have a couple that wants to rent out our current house, which will be great because we've known them for a long while. Once the market picks back up, the house goes up for sale. Other than that, buying clothes for a warm humid climate, and having a yardsale to unload a bunch of stuff we don't need.
  3. Going out to dinner with a couple of undergrad friends that recieved REU acceptances in the past week. Dual celebration, good times had by all.
  4. Thanks for the helpful suggestions! Yes, my parents live only about 2 miles away from my house, and my brother even closer. So any tenants will be under watchful eyes and repairs will be taken care of when necessary. I was more wondering when a good time to start advertising was, and it looks to be about 45-60 days beforehand. Any more suggestions would be great too!
  5. So I own a house in the city which I did my undergrad. I am moving literally across the country for grad school. I'm pretty confident I will be able to rent my house out, but it still scares the hell out of me knowing that I will have to find tenants that are willing to take over the property at the exact time I am supposed to leave. Does anyone have experience with this? If you do, what month (or date) did you start advertising your house for rent? Did you do it independently or go through a property manager? Craigslist? etc... Thanks in advance!
  6. 1. Summer yard/garage/estate sales 2. Purchase Items for cheap 3. List on eBay for ridiculous prices 4. ???????? 5. Barely live 3 months until Fall
  7. Hey guys, anybody going here Fall 2013? I just accepted my offer yesterday. Very excited to live in South Florida for the next 5-6 years of my life (coming from the Pacific Northwest). I'd be interested if any of you are going here!
  8. C-Diggy, I'd like to personally thank you for your post. I am in the exact same situation, where my wife and I own our house yet will have to rent it out and move across the country to find an apartment. I have written down all the things you have recommended, I can't thank you enough.
  9. One reason, and one reason only: I don't feel like I'm ready to be done learning yet. Will that change after PhD? Probably not. But this is the best route for me. I wasn't even thinking about grad school 5 months ago, and I applied to these schools on a whim thinking that I wouldn't have a chance. Somehow I got in, and I am not naive enough to believe I'll ever have this opportunity again in my life. I must take the opportunity, I must take the risk, I must learn as much as I possibly can -- this is a pretty good descrption of who I am.
  10. The worst is getting unofficial notification that you've been accepted, and knowing that is the school you want to attend but waiting for official notification to come via email/postal so you can actually accept (hoping it was not a mistake, hah).

Hello all! Well, it seems as though my graduate school application season has come to an end, as I'll probably be deciding on going to to Florida Atlantic University for next Fall. Now comes the logistics. I will be going with my wife, 5 year old son, and english bulldog. We need to find an apartment (or house, or duplex) that is within $800-$1100 dollars per month. From what I have see we're mostly going to be looking at the Del Ray Beach and Deerfield Park area, which is a small commute up I95 to campus which is completely doable. That said, are there any specific apt complexes within that are and price range that accept animals that one could suggest for us? We want to be able to walk outside at night and go get an ice cream, somewhat close to the beach, not dangerous, etc.. Very much appreciated guys! Good luck with the rest of the app season!
  12. Im in somewhat of a similar situation. I recieved a PhD acceptance, but the TA/RAships are very competitive and awarded based on merit. That said, I contacted my POI and he said that funding decisions would be sent out mid to late march. I think what is happening is that the department has a certain budget, and they are accepting as many students as they 'predict' they will be able to fund, and waitlist the rest. Also, they want to know what the situation is going to be like with their current grad students, so they have a better idea of that in March. I'm not too worried about the funding aspect of it, because I have no idea how anybody would be able to get through 5 year while working fulltime. Further, if I had the money to fund myself (250k at least) then I certainly wouldn't even be going to grad school in the first place. Good luck to all of us!
  13. "Honey, I'm pretty sure you need your masters degree before you can apply for PhD programs."
  14. I applied to one MS program, and three PhD programs. The MS program is at my undergrad institution, and have been assured that they will have decisions by the end of this week (ugh.. I don't know what I would do if they didn't accept me into my own school). Luckily I have already been accepted into one PhD program (funding TBA mid-late march), and have two more PhD apps pending. My top choice is one of the PhD programs that is still pending, so fingers crossed.
  15. TA app asks, "What date did you finish the online graudate application form", and you respond with ,"Yes."
