You have to look out for yourself. It's frowned upon, but if it's worth it, do it.

So I mentioned that submitted proposals for the first time a couple days ago. I got an email last night about one of them and almost had a minor freak out just from reading the subject line.

Then I read the email, and it was just from the presenter letting me know that they were canceling that session.

I don't know much about funding differences, but I think the general perception is that state schools are easier to get into. I'm not sure how grounded in reality that really is though.

Just made it official: English at the University of Michigan!! So excited to be done with this never-ending application/decision process. And even more excited to get started with the fun stuff in the fall!

Does having 5 kids count as extracurricular activities    While I got my masters I took care of the kids (took evening classes), served on the nursery school board, served on the elementary board, and was room mother for two classrooms.  I agree 100 % about the time management thing.  I feel like I actually get so much more done now because I don't waste much time (except right now when I should be writing and am browsing this forum ).

I second the scheduling advice. I would also say to become good friends with your cohort. They make a great support system and if you hang out and study together it doesn't seem all that daunting, but that was just my experience.

I've learned in grad school that you have as much time as you make. With good time management, I have managed to do all my coursework, work out (run, swim, bike, weight train) about 3 hours a day, join a once a week softball league, spend time with my significant other... in short, you learn how to make time. It's not that hard.

It's official! I accepted my offer at PSU and I feel... weird. I expected to feel relieved and overwhelmingly happy--and I'm certainly relieved--but my stupid brain can't get over all the "what ifs." Also, it doesn't look like anyone else from this board is headed there this year. Sad.

Perhaps a google docs might be beneficial here for a collaborative effort.

Anywho, I've accepted an offer at The Ohio State University (English PhD).

After a great open house yesterday, I decided this morning to accept Brandeis University's PhD offer! Can't wait to head back up to Boston :-)

Can people share their funding packages?

Or, can we start an wiki page where people can enter information about the various funding packages they've received in order to start a database for future applicants?

I think it might be a useful resource...

California is the only location on my list that I would be really stoked about. WUSTL is my favorite program so far, but I would love to live in LA. My girlfriend is not too pleased with the list that I have drawn up--especially the Southern states. I do want to make sure though that we, as a gay couple, will be able to move to a place that is LGBT-friendly (and safe). That's the only thing that is making me a little bit skeptical about a couple of my choices...

So... Kathleen Griffin just called to let me know that travel expenses WILL be reimbursed after all. So disregard everything I posted about earlier.

I agree with Zinc. Unfunded is no way to enter a PhD program.

That being said, after my first acceptance to ASU, I was put on the funding waitlist. A spot opened three weeks later and I got a TAship. So it does happen.

I look at a funding waitlist the same as a regular waitlist because I've been told virtually none but the independently wealthy pay their own way.

If you aren't funded for a PhD program, absolutely do not go.
