  1. An $18k stipend isn't a livable wage in Boston. But knowing where you're going, even vaguely, would help with giving advice.
  2. If only my archives were in the UK, my research trip would have just gotten a lot less expensive.
  3. You wouldn't really want what would take their place, though.
  4. Temporarily would be grand, and I'm not too picky.
  5. The ability to make everyone else disappear.
  6. I used an article I had presented, submitted, and received feedback on, but not yet published.
  7. The people saying don't worry - what happens if they come to the same conclusions, and the professor publishes the book first? If OP wants a TT job, they now have to start all over on the book project. Or worse, if the professor publishes the book before the diss, and its no longer original research? I would talk it over with your adviser, who may know the professor in question better, and if the opportunity is there, perhaps even reach out to them. But I think that just putting your head down and hoping is a great way to end up royally screwed.
  8. Oh but they are, though. You might look up the Idaho stop law. Also, drivers frequently ignore and/or roll through stop signs and no one seems to care very much. Many rules of the road make little to no sense for cyclists, and should be ignored. Similarly, rules of the road that make no sense for drivers (e.g. speed limits) are also frequently ignored.
  9. The Medieval Academy of America (which is admittedly interdisciplinary) said at its annual meeting in February that 46% of its membership was women.
  10. I ride my bike very fast until the only think I can think about is how much it hurts to ride my bike very fast. After that, I stop thinking and just enjoy the endorphines.
  11. I am not impressed by the Important People you know, and allowing your insecurity to manifest by telling me all the Important People you know is really, really annoying
  12. As an avid cyclist, no. Or more specifically, technically yes, but they're super expensive and a marginal improvement. You might look into "baggies" - mountain biking shorts for those who want the glory of lycra without all the skin-tightness

Yeah, there's no way in hell I'm leaving this outside, regardless of how many locks I put on it. If there's no spot left, do you (or anyone else) know of indoor storage options? I'd definitely be willing to pay.
  14. This doesn't work fantastically for Chicago Notes & Bib, sad to say. There's actually ways to get Zotero to "scan" your document looking for citation keys, too.
  15. Is this not explicitly spelled out by your department? Usually, when you're supposed to fill your credit requirements is set there because it determines when you get your MA, and when you start your qualifying exams.
  16. Half my text for any given piece of writing is in the footnotes, and I also use LaTeX, and the bibliographic abilities are fantastic. I use Zotero to generate my .bib files, and the whole system works very well. However, programs that convert (e.g. Pandoc) tex to word can't pull the citations when they do so, so if your publisher insists on word, it's a lot of work to convert.
  17. Yes, you should publish when you have something to publish, and yes, you should try to have something to publish. You will still find the "don't publish before PHD" advice kicking around, but you do want a job when graduate, right?
  18. Woo, cycling team! Yes, it's doable, but you need to learn how to create time for yourself, and it often involves making decisions as to where to put your effort that you would not have to otherwise.

So I'm in Toronto for 6 weeks this summer, and I'm staying at the Graduate House. I bike a lot, and have a fairly expensive road bike I would like to bring with me, but the Graduate House forbids in-room storage, there's a limited amount of indoor storage, and they won't guarantee me an indoor spot before I get there. Does anyone have any advice on where I can keep the bike?
  20. This. Yes, you're a special flower. No, you're not that special.
  21. Writing concisely is, in and of itself, a discipline, and a discipline worthy of practice. If you're within ca. 10%, i.e. 1 page per 10, whatever. Otherwise, you're not doing the assignment, and the great quality of your paper doesn't transform it into the assignment.
  22. I have a paleography course in Toronto, and then I'm off to France for some archival work. Academic life, it is so hard.
  23. Unaffiliated funding sources are not exactly common in the humanities, and were a medievalist to obtain one, they would use it to be near their archive in Europe.
  24. I think they actually mean present like a 1-hr lecture, but it's ambiguous.
  25. I just got this email: Excuse me, I'm going to be besides myself with rage for a bit.
