You guys i discovered the best way to subvert anxiety over waiting to hear decisions .... get the norovirus! I just made it through two days of being super sick and now I'm like, oh yeah, Fulbright emails today. (Then immediately fall back asleep...)

    Feel better!

Just wanted to let everyone know that my FPA just reached out to tell us that Fulbright results will be emailed to us tomorrow directly from the Embark/Fulbright program.  So I guess I can stop obsessively checking my email for the day?

Ughhh, I have to teach undergrad seniors from 9-4 tomorrow. Now they can see what total devastation looks like  Thanks for letting us know.

I would assume that the Fulbright Commission is well aware of the MLK holiday; I doubt they would boldly post such a specific date to their reviewer's guide if they weren't!

Additionally, I figure they would also consider students' feelings (from my own understanding being on the reviewer's side for things). Imagine getting dropped out of the running today and having to cope with the rejection over, say, a pre-planned vacation... Maybe they're letting us have our holiday before breaking the news?

You are probably right, though I'd much prefer to have a cathartic cry in the privacy of my weekend, haha

I think so too, but I wait until 5pm to be sure. At least that means another week where I can pretend I actually have a shot at this thing :)

ha! Right there with ya. I'm already planning for next year.

When did you receive this? Or, was it sent to an FPA and forwarded to you?

(also: hi everyone, I applied for France, currently going low key nuts for all the same reasons.)

I received this email this morning from the Fulbright Program Advisors at the University of Michigan.

@Horb yeah I think the advisors at UM put that date just as a buffer (aka don't start emailing about when results will come in...until January 30)

Does anyone have an FPA who has a close in with Fulbright ? I can vaguely remember people in the past getting a heads up close to the date from their FPA. But I could just be dream'n

    FPA=Fulbright Program Advisor, yes?

UM Fulbright sent the following email this morning:

    Hello all,

We hope that the start of 2017 is treating you all well.

We wanted to take a brief moment to remind you about the application process and next steps for you as a 2017-18 Fulbright U.S. Student Program applicant.

    1. Initial Notifications on Application Status will be sent by January 30, 2017All applicants are notified (via email) as to whether they were designated as "Recommended/Semi-Finalists" or "Non-Recommended" by the Fulbright National Screening Committee.

    •  If you are selected as "Recommended/Semi-Finalist," please be sure to read the email from the Fulbright Commission carefully. All information about next steps will be in the email and notification letter. The email will tell you who to contact at national headquarters if you have questions. It is important to note that while an accomplishment, recommendation/Semi-finalist status is not receipt of a grant. Recommended/Semi-Finalist applications are forwarded to the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy in the host country for additional review.
    • If you are designated as "Non-Recommended," U-M Fulbright Program Advisors are happy to talk with you about resubmitting an application for the 2018-19 grant cycle. We will be holding office hours throughout the semester and are happy to meet with you in person, via phone, or Google Chat. These appointments can be made online using our appointment scheduler. Click here to schedule an appointment. Please note that it is the policy of the Fulbright Board that reasons for non-recommendation of candidates not be given. In many cases, candidates were well qualified to receive a grant and no one specific factor, other than the sheer number of applications to their specific country prohibited them from reaching the next stage.

    2. Final Notifications on Application Status will be sent beginning in March 2017.
    • Notification begins early March and continues throughout the spring (late May 2017). Notification dates vary by country.
    • All candidates in this round are notified as to whether they have been "selected for an award," designated as "alternates," or "non-selected."
    • If you are "selected for an award," please be sure to read the email from the Fulbright Commission closely. Please take note that the email will tell you who to contact at national headquarters if you have questions about your award.
    • If you are designated as an "alternate," please be sure to read the email from the Fulbright Commission closely.  Please take note that the email will tell you who to contact at national headquarters if you have questions about your status.
    • If you are designated as "non-Selected," U-M Fulbright Program Advisors are happy to talk with you about resubmitting an application for the 2018-19 grant cycle. We will be holding office hours throughout the summer and are happy to meet with you in person, via phone, or Google Chat. These appointments can be made online using our appointment scheduler. Click here to schedule an appointment.  Please note that it is the policy of the Fulbright Board that reasons for non-select of candidates not be given.

If you have any questions about the above process, please let us know.

We wish you all the best of luck with the competition!

This is a bit old but how was your experience applying as an artist for Fulbright through U of M ? I am from Michigan and have been looking into their masters programs.

The program is amazing, though not a good fit for all artists. Feel free to message or email me if you want to chat more, I'd be happy to share my experience.

I was looking at UMichigan but wasn't sure if there's much of an art scene in Ann Arbor/Detroit...what do you think of it so far?

Not much of an art scene in Ann Arbor, no. Detroit has a fucking awesome art scene though. There are all different types of galleries, residencies, happenings going on constantly. Art Detroit Now has a great newsletter that goes out if you're interested.

  9. Making a plug for the University of Michigan. Multiple fully-funded positions, teaching experience, stipend, required (and funded) international trip, facilities that compare to NASA, massive studio spaces and faculty that is out of this world. Then there's the funding opportunities outside of the Stamps School of Art & Design...which are endless. I could not be happier in this program. Everyone is really down to earth. It's close enough to Detroit that you can work/show/be part of the art community in the Motor City as well. I strongly encourage those interdisciplinary artists to apply.

  10. Taking three years off between graduating and beginning grad this fall was the best decision I could have made for my art. My work has progressed immensely, I had the opportunity to enter many more juried shows, get a bunch of grants & awards (many grants are only open to those who aren't enrolled in academic study), get art related jobs, figure how to balance studio with a day job and be resourceful with materials, be part of the local art community. The portfolio with which I applied was 95% those three years. I am headed to a fully-funded school where I'll not only be getting paid to attend but will graduate without owing anyone a dime.
Everyone is different, but I urge those considering going straight from undergrad to grad...ask yourself what harm taking a year off would do?
Just a thought; everyone has different circumstances. Do your thing.

  11. Hey everyone. I know it's late but I wanted to post this because there has been a lot of talk here about Hunter not giving any $.

Yesterday I received a scholarship that is two years full ride at in state tuition rates. They also offer supplemental funding outside of financial aid.

Not about me boasting I just want to spread the word...when it comes to hunter never offering $ ... Don't believe the hype!

Congrats! So awesome for you. Thanks for sharing that info for future peeps :)

  12. Anyone here have experience with writing scholarship essays?  I'm applying to a scholarship and the guidelines do not provide a specific word count limitation.  I'm wondering how long these essays usually should be...I have a tendency to ramble if not given a cut-off point, and I don't want to bore the selection committee!  Since they left it open-ended, I'm guessing it's just up to my discretion, but I'd like to know if anyone on here has some insight on the ideal length.  I've seen online that maybe 500 words or so is a good length?

~500 words is a good length. I always try and keep in mind that the reviewers are looking at (sometimes) hundreds of essays. Shoot me an email if you want an extra pair of eyes when you get to that point! ruthkburke (at) g mail.com

  13. What would you do if you have a not very good school but in New York (The New York Academy) and that offers better scholarship (but not a full one), and MICA - more expensive and in Baltimore - to choose from? I have to make a decision in two days.. aaahhh!

I would evaluate the difference in price and then take into account that interest will probably double whatever you'll pay. MICA is a very good school. Have you talked to both programs about how they support you in the year or two after you graduate?

  14. Hey all. Plug for next year...

Just finished a visit with UMich. They paid for EVERYTHING- just to visit. The other funding opportunities are out of this world. Program is amazing and resources are next level shit in terms of faculty, new media, libraries, conference/residency/project funding and I'm very impressed with the work of current students. They really pulled out all the stops for accepted students. If you are interdisciplinary and a go-getter, this university is worth applying to. All students accepted this year (5 of us) are fully funded with material and travel stipend. We had lovely dinners with faculty and current grads while here.

If the school wants you, they will pay YOU to come study with them and pay for your entire visit; I cannot stress this enough. Today, outside curators said UM is competing with the top art schools/programs in the country and, while expectations are very high, they have a stupid amount of money to hand out. Research universities FTW.

  15. I see that a few of you have participated in Yale interviews,  but have included very little details regarding the interview process and experience, this is the opposite from other Yale related forums from the previous years. Hope you guys find the time to let us in on what went on during this years Yale interviews, as Yale has a very unique interview process.

Anyhow, I have taken the time too look over Yale student work, and was disappointed. The quality of work was not exciting, and seemed rather primitive compared to many top MFA programs student work I have looked at. I mainly viewed Yales first and second years painting and printmaking students; which supposedly be the most competitive for admissions.

Maybe it's me, but does anyone feel the same way, I know it's  my opinion--just was wondering what others felt.

Sounds like it's not the school for you.

  16. Scratch that--- just got a call from John Carson offering ACCEPTANCE TO CARNEGIE MELLON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best Bday present EVER. Cannot believe it.

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH happy happy day. Go celebrate! You should be incredibly proud. Now go tell everyone you know :) yay! Very happy for you!

  17. So I'm definitely assuming rejection from my new top choice, CMU. This leaves me w/ acceptances from MICA, SAIC Low-Res, and American U. This week I'll be doing some heavy research on visiting artists, professors and recent grads.

This is going to be a tough decision...Pick one of these schools, or wait again and apply next year???? MICA is ranked high these days, but I was only offered 1/3 funding. I want grad school NOW, but man. Maybe I need to wait. :(

Why do you want it now? Why do you NEED it now? The answer to those will probably also answer your question about whether you should wait or not. Good luck! Tough choice. I was really happy I waited. Sounds like Czarina is too. It's a very heavy personal decision. The debt will take a long time to pay off regardless.
