Honestly, I think that your actions have to speak louder than your words. That is, you'll need to prove to your current and future colleagues that you were falsely accused. Because my reaction, at least upon reading your initial post, is that you were accused of something but it didn't go any further because various authority figures decided that the accuser's story was weak and thus had little chance of being successful in court. None of which, by the way, indicates a false accusation, merely one with a lack of physical evidence or other factors that make police and prosecutors hesitant to legally pursue such crimes and perpetuate a cultural problem where women who are raped or sexually assaulted keep silent, rather than coming forward.

I'll say this, in case you don't get in: it really isn't the end of the world, but it really will feel like it is. The only thing that finally picked me up from last year was submitting apps this year. I was able to replace embarrassment and frustration with hope and a sense of perseverance. This year it paid off. If it's what you want, keep trying.

Now you have another whole year to work, study harder, do well and improve the next application season

Feels like I'm stalking you, cquin, but can I ask the kinds of things you did to revise your list by fit? I hope I'm going about it the right way, but I'm not sure what else I should be looking for besides relevant faculty (and funding, and location, etc.). What am I missing?

I agree, wholeheartedly. Of course, I am only now writing my statements of purpose, so everyone ahead of me can feel a bit better.

It depends on the day. Some days I feel like "yeah, I have a chance," and then other days I'm like "I am so f-ed. This is never going to happen."
