Atropos got a reaction from Adequate Philosopher in Western Michigan MA Spots Available
So, I heard that Western Michigan currently has all of their funded offers out, but they are potentially looking to make a couple unfunded ones as well. When I got my MA at WMU there were a few unfunded grad students in my class, but by our second year they had all moved into funded spots...I'm not saying that that'll happen this time, but it definitely could. But, even if it didn't the cost of living in Kalamazoo is quite low and they're doing some cool philosophy. Just thought I'd pass the word on in case any of you were still looking for a school...I definitely enjoyed my time there.

I only applied to one program this year.
I had been shutout from all the schools I applied in two years of applying, so this year I only applied to my best chance/fit. This gave me time to really tailor my application to Maryland's department. Plus, I really couldn't put myself through the process of applying to tons of programs and being rejected again.
It paid off in the end. I was accepted to Maryland this afternoon.

Atropos reacted to reixis in Decisions 2015!
I just accepted Otago's offer. I will be moving to New Zealand next semester!
I received a pretty good scholarship offer ($25,000, non taxable) annually, plus tutor opportunities that amount to approximately $6,000 each year. It's a research only degree (similar to the UK) and the offer is for three years and a half. I know the department is not ranked, but I have heard a lot of good things about them and I will have the opportunity to work with a leading figure in my area of interest who happens to teach in NZ (though not at Otago). Anyway, after carefully balancing my professional interests and my personal interests, I decided I would give it a shot.
I will withdrawn my name from the places I'm waitlisted. I hope this helps someone. Also, best of luck for everyone and thank you for making this place such a friendly environment. If anyone is ever coming to NZ and needs a place to stay, feel free to shoot me a message.

Waitlisted at UConn, with "pretty reasonable" chance of admission.

I'm in! I'm in! Received an offer of admission from Boston College in the mail today. After having resolved to begin planning my apps for next year. I can't believe it!
Not sure about financial aid situation yet, I'll figure it out when I can think straight.
Time for celebratory wine!!!

I know it's for theology and not philosophy, but I have to share my excitement! I checked my admission status at Cambridge, and it now says: "Awaiting decision by the Board of Graduate Studies - Status: The degree committee is satisfied with your application. However, your offer has not yet been approved."
I know I still need to wait for the rubber-stamp of the BGS, and have no idea if they're going to offer me funding - but it was a wonderful surprise after all the rejections I've received recently!

Atropos reacted to ianfaircloud in Shafer-Landau from Wisconsin to North Carolina
It's huge, and it's a real shame for those who looked forward to working with him in Madison. Thing is, he's such a key figure there. Just to offer some encouragement: When departments lose someone big, often they try to compensate with new hires. Of course I have no information to indicate whether UW Madison will do this. I know that if I were dean of the school of arts and sciences at Madison, I would be thinking very seriously about how to maintain the strength of the philosophy department. For one thing, Madison has drawn in a respectable crowd for an annual conference on metaethics, which I have to believe would be affected after this departure.
Edit: Also, not to neglect the UNC aspect of the story. UNC just lost Bob Adams to retirement not long ago. Adams of course is (among other things) a strong metaethicist. UNC's hire of Shafer-Landau is an effort to compensate. See how that works? So those at UNC are really fortunate.

In case anyone missed it: This is very big news for some people who are considering UNC Chapel Hill or UW Madison. It's a real loss to UW Madison and gain to Chapel Hill. Also, if you applied to UW Madison and mentioned an AOI of metaethics or ethics generally, I wonder whether this move changed anything in evaluation of your application. (E.g. for those who mentioned they want to work with Russ Shafer-Laundau.)

Great. The only reason I was interested in UW-Madison in the first place was because of Shafer-Landau and the day I hear I've been waitlisted there this gets announced ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Atropos got a reaction from Nastasya_Filippovna in 2015 Acceptance Thread
I also received a wait-list to UWM (adding mine to the results page in a sec). This is the first good news I've heard (a ton of rejections), so here's to hoping a lot of those who received acceptances get into even better places.

Got waitlisted at UW-Madison- oh god please I hope enough ppl turn down offers they have to accept me- this would be absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And ugh- I got a huge envelope from Boston College today- all to read that while I was not accepted into their PhD program, I was invited to their MA program. It was a compliment but I wish they hadn't sent it in a huge envelope. That was a real tease.

Atropos reacted to Eigen in 2015 Acceptance Thread
Just to be clear, I really don't care if you down-vote my post, I just thought the irony was quite funny.
Apparently, it was not sufficient moderating, and instead of reminding people to be mature I should have moved straight to removing offensive posts, and warnings & suspensions. I seem to have overestimated the responsiveness of the posters here.

Atropos reacted to Twas Brillig in 2015 Acceptance Thread
Eigen, your first two posts on this page received the downvotes they did because you evidently missed the reason people were reacting negatively to Nikolay's posts. I suggest that you take the time to read through his posts on this thread, starting from page 19. Nikolay claims to have gotten into UNC's top-ranked program, despite not having heard anything from their department; claims to have refuted intelligent design in his six-paragraph blog post; makes fun of other people's news of acceptances; and encourages another applicant to personally write to a professor at UChicago to inquire about the status of their UC Davis application. All of these things point to a pretty clear intent of provoking reactions and derailing the conversation: this is why most people on this forum are downvoting, rather than directly responding to, his posts. No one here is downvoting him because he is from a "non-US cultural background."
Your last two posts received the downvotes they did because, frankly, they are infantile. I agree that there's some irony in the fact that your post about down-voting received plenty of downvotes itself, but this is nowhere as hilariously ironic as the fact that you are lecturing us on "being mature" all the while engaging in what's probably most passive-aggressive display of shit-throwing I have ever seen on this forum.
