  1. I just got a call from CSU San Marcos that I was accepted!!
  2. I spend about $1200/month on food for my family of 7, which is pretty painful. When you break it down it's only about $40/week per person, but it obviously adds up. It's our 2nd biggest expense behind housing. We very rarely dine out and I cook a lot of pasta, rice, beans, and fresh vegetables.
  3. I'm in a similar situation in that I am unable to relocate for school, so I ended up only applying to one school. My husband and I are both from the area and he has a good job that he likes, we own a home here, and we have 5 kids who are in excellent schools that we don't want to move. Also, since we have custody of my stepdaughter we would have to get a court order to move from the county, which would be a long, difficult process with no guaranteed results. Luckily I'm not applying to anything extremely competitive like a PhD program, but having my options so limited makes this process pretty nerve-wracking.
  4. I'll be 32, but I didn't start undergrad until I was 28. I was a teen mom and high school dropout, so instead of college I initially went to a 4 year trade school and spent the majority of my teens and 20's working and saving. I wanted to buy a house, save up enough to go to school without loans, and make sure my family was comfortable before I embarked on traditional college.
  5. I just looked up the requirements for the CSULA personal statement because I was curious to see how it compared to the CSUSM statement requirements. It looks like CSUSM lifted their requirements directly from CSULA. It's identical, which seems kind of lazy. I wrote that 8 page statement over the summer and it was a pain in the ass, but it definitely allows you to elaborate. At least I know that if I don't get into CSUSM I can use the exact same statement for CSULA.
  6. I just need to vent and it looks like I came to the right place. I applied to a program with rolling admissions in mid November with a typical turnaround of 3-4 weeks. Week 4 comes around and I haven't even received my transcript evaluation sheet yet, so I call and they say they never received my application (I have an email confirmation), nor have they received my application packet with all of my transcripts, LORs, and admissions essay. Two weeks later, after several calls to admissions and my department, they discover that they accidentally created 2 files for me and both were incomplete because application materials were in one and my application was in the other. Well, now after 7 weeks we are finally moving forward and yesterday they emailed me my academic evaluation with the gpa they calculated for my last 60 units and a nice little note that they were forwarding my application to my department for a decision. This would be really exciting if they had put my correct last 60 gpa, which is a 3.96, instead of their typoed gpa of 3.06. I called and was told to email the advisor, which I did and I haven't heard back yet. I'm starting to have serious doubts about spending the next 2 years dealing with them.
  7. Ooh, an older students thread! It's nice to see so many people who understand the family/school/work/life struggle. I am 32, raising 5 kids between the ages of 5 and 13, and finishing up my senior year of undergrad at one of the Cal States. I am applying to an MSW program for next fall and am starting to really stress about it. I think my stats are pretty strong, but I only applied to one school so that's always a huge risk. Even if I get in there will be juggling the added stresses of school, field work, and trying not to completely neglect my kids during their teenage years. Anyway, best of luck to everyone in their academic and personal pursuits!
  8. UG Major: Social Science w/ emphasis in Sociology Overall GPA: 3.16 (when I applied it was 3.08) Last 60 GPA: 4.0 No GRE - Not needed Experience: 2 years as a correctional officer and 600+ hours volunteering as a sexual assault victim advocate and attending SART exams Hopefully strong LORs from a sociology professor who always gave me extremely positive feedback, a professor I took 3 grad-level career counseling courses with, and my volunteer supervisor who seemed very positive about writing my letter. When I applied I was very confident. I only applied to one school (a Cal State). It has rolling admissions and it's been 7 weeks since I applied and I haven't heard anything. I'm starting to doubt everything about my application and my qualifications and I deeply regret that I didn't apply to a few more schools.
  9. This! And also movies written and/or directed by Seth Rogen. I want to like them, but I can't.
  10. "Reality" television, Divergent book series, public events, tween shows with overly independent, smart-mouthed child stars, flavored coffee
  11. Hi Everyone! I'm only applying to Cal State San Marcos. It's a very new program and still in candidacy for accreditation, but I live in the town and we're tied to the area and I really don't want to do an online program. I'm doing my undergrad online through a different CSU, and while I love it, I really want to be in class making connections and since next year my youngest child is entering school I'll have a little more freedom to do that. My experience is 2 years working in corrections + 2 years sexual assault response team volunteer which I am still doing. I had a very rough start when I tried college fresh out of high school so my overall gpa is relatively low, but thankfully CSUSM only looks at the last 60, which is a 4.0. I put my completed application packet in the mail 11/14 and now I'm just waiting to hear back. Is anyone else looking into CSUSM? I'd really like to know how long it takes to hear back and what their admission stats are like, but because it's so new it's hard to find any information. Good luck everyone!!!
