  1. Oh, I hear that! I've heard that New York can be difficult when transferring certification from out-of-state. I did end up reapplying for the ETA to Macedonia, and I'm a finalist again; if we both end up getting it, we will have to meet up at some point. I'd love to speak to another teacher. Speaking of which, what did you say your area was? I'm sorry if you mentioned it before. I only come on here sporadically. :-) In any case, I didn't end up applying for any of the positions I looked at. It didn't end up becoming an issue, as I received my graduate school offers in February.
  2. Hi! Actually, I was in the same (or a similar enough) situation last year. I applied for an ETA to Macedonia (ended up being an Alternate), applied to four graduate schools, and started looking for teaching positions (I have my 7-12 English certification). One of the issues is that you can't possibly get a quicker answer from Fulbright. At the same rate, why would you want to go the private school route if you're graduating with state certification? The obvious choice, and I mean that sincerely and candidly, would be to apply to positions in public schools to ensure that you have job security. As far as I know, the majority of private schools do not provide anything even comparable to tenure, as they're not required to adhere to the same state standards. Nevertheless, you'll have to decide which is more appealing to you at this point: an offered teaching position or the possibility of teaching abroad for a year. If you opt for the Fulbright and do not receive it, you could always substitute daily and keep your eyes open for a long-term position.
  3. My relationship ended when I came down here; she couldn't tolerate the distance, I suppose. Why would you willingly live separately? Wouldn't the obvious choice be to find a place in between, so that you each have the same long, but still tolerable, commute?
  4. Any thoughts on publishing in working papers during the first year of a Ph.D. program?
  5. When I was recommended last year, I contacted them to ask about this directly. The reason was that I started at a community college and then transferred to a four-year university. They wanted both transcripts.
  6. Requested my transcripts today and will now attempt to forget I applied until more information becomes available. How's everyone doing out there, especially if you've been recommended?
  7. Recommended again for Macedonia ETA. Here's hoping that I am a Principal this year instead of an Alternate! Congratulations to all who were recommended, and best of luck to all of those who will try again next year.
  8. Although my application materials were strong enough for me to be an Alternate for an ETA, I realized that I needed to improve the focus of my project. Additionally, I also realized that checking this thread once per hour was not helpful in the slightest; fortunately, I have many other responsibilities at this point that prevent me from logging on but every few days. I can second the last part about final notifications. I didn't receive my final notification about the ETA until JUNE 2ND!
  9. The best advice I have is to check last year's spreadsheet and look at the notification dates. If you search for Fulbright 2014-2015, you might be able to find a post in there that has a link to the document. Otherwise, there might be previous years' information in the current spreadsheet.
  10. Tough situation. I made it to the finalist stage last year and wasn't selected. I was so bummed about it that I reapplied, mostly because I still really wanted to do it, but also partly because I internalized the rejection so much. It was only recently that I realized how much of an honor it was simply to make it through the first round, let alone even to be an Alternate at the end of it all. Good luck -- chin up!
  11. For the initial round? Mine didn't. It only contained the following text: "Your Fulbright Application."
  12. I applied for an ETA last year in Macedonia, and they didn't require an interview. If an interview were required, however, I imagine that they would want you to expound upon what you mentioned in your statements. If your country doesn't require any proficiency in the language, it certainly wouldn't be in that language.
  13. I received mine on January 28, 2014.
  14. Can you satisfy it by any other means? My program also permits students to take an upper-level course in the language to fulfill the requirement.
  15. I actually went through the same feeling last year, and I've been sitting here anticipating the email about the survey.
  16. I've been holding off on posting on this thread until it got closer to the end of the semester, but now we're here! I've found this to be my most difficult and most rewarding semester in terms of academic and personal circumstances. Coming from a service-based major (viz. education), I feel like my undergraduate institution didn't prepare me nearly enough for the research and essay writing components, which has led to a great deal of stress, but I can't imagine I'm the only one who feels that way. I have three presentations to give this week, one paper to turn in this week, one paper to turn in next week, and three exams next week. Once all that is finished, I'll be heading home for almost a month -- hopefully with a little relaxation! I wish you all the best of luck with the rest of the semester.
  17. I don't want to be a pessimist, but what makes you feel more convinced this time around that "Licensed Professional Counsel[ing]" is the path for you? You want to be absolutely certain that you're not going to attend school again strictly for the sake of getting a degree, for example. Also: I'm not sure what type of financial aid you received, but you might want to make sure that you are not required to pay the monies back in exchange for having failed the courses.
  18. It all depends where you apply, how you market yourself, and what the rest of your application looks like. I was accepted to a Ph.D. program in linguistics immediately after finishing my B.S.Ed. in May. There are too many variables to tell you outright that you have no chance, and, in fact, my own experience discounts that mentality. Chin up.
  19. Oh, I misinterpreted what you wrote. I didn't think they changed the turn-around that much in a single year's time.
  20. Three weeks? What do you mean?
  21. It was really difficult for me to deal with it last year, mostly because I was taking my last semester of undergraduate classes. However, I'm taking graduate courses this time around. I don't check the forum every day like I used to, for example. What do you find yourself doing these days besides thinking about it?
  22. To anyone who re-applied this year: Do you think there was less or more competition? It seems like the spreadsheet is smaller and the discussion on here much more subdued than last year, not that this is necessarily an indication of the overall amount of applications.
  23. You can also look at Orie (2013) for some recent work on gestures in Yoruba.
