  1. If you haven't already written the paper, it gives you a convenient way to dispense your (preliminary) results and receive feedback before writing it. If you have written a paper, however, you can refine specific areas after the presentation and submit it for publication. Presenting at conferences is also good for making professional contacts and enhancing your CV.
  2. Thanks for your feedback! I did also touch base with them to provide the corrected version. I did find the same type of question from others on different websites, but it didn't seem too frequent on this forum. Phew! Thanks for the reassurance. EDIT: I just received a response from one of the schools, and I was told not to worry about it, that it's not a big deal, etc.
  3. Hi everyone! I just remembered last night that I had copied one line from one of my other SOPs, but I didn't realize that it had referenced a different school. Every other reference is correct in my school-specific SOPs, excluding that one line. I emailed the graduate admissions at each school to apologize for the oversight and assure them that such a mistake is not representative of my best week. Given that I reference the correct school four more times in each SOP, how much do you think this will hurt me? I'm sure they must realize that small errors like this probably (?) happen relatively frequently.
  4. Given that the national committee met during November and December to make decisions about applicants, it seems extremely late to be sending in additional information. Nevertheless, I'm certainly not on that committee or qualified to answer your question definitively. In my opinion, however, it seems like it would be of negligible value at this point in the game. Is there any reason you're trying to submit an additional letter now?
  5. Sorry for the late response! I'm at Kutztown University with a declared major of Secondary English Education.
  6. I'd be glad to take a look at it too. I'm currently a Secondary English Education major. Don't despair!
  7. I ended up spending $430 overall: $185 for the GRE, $220 for applications (four schools), and $25 for an additional GRE score recipient.
  8. Can't it be reverted to an earlier revision?
  9. What can you do with a four-year degree in your field if you decide not to continue? Make sure that every degree counts and contributes toward your ability to find a job. By the way, did you pick up an Associates along the way?
  10. Take it one step at a time. It's less about where you went and more about what you did while there. You get out of college exactly what you put in. And, just as general advice, slow down with life. It's easy to get lost in a five- or ten-year plan, but it's difficult to enjoy the here-and-now if you're always planning for the future. Go to a school that's affordable and has a few majors that interest you. Once you start attending, you might find that your interests change. The worst thing you can do is get locked into a program you might despise in a few years. Good luck!
  11. Have you guys found that anyone else at your university applied? I only know one other student at my institution who applied.
  12. Start shopping for Christmas! By the way, which school do you currently attended? You live awfully close to me, and I also applied to an MA African American Literature program. Good luck!
  13. Would you be able to give us an idea of what your timeline looked like? There are a lot more applicants on here for the research grant, so some advice from an ETA for an ETA would be great!
  14. Thanks for this! Any idea why the notifications listed are much later than January, which is currently listed on their website?
  15. It's great to see another education major and ETA applicant. Good luck! In case you didn't read earlier, I am a Secondary English Education (grades 7-12) major, and I'm applying for the ETA to Macedonia. Although the projected statistics are a little worse (6/2), I still feel really good about my application!
  16. The best course of action you can take is to go to the Registrar and ask about the policy at your university, as the policies surrounding pass/fail courses may differ. At my university in particular, you cannot change the designation after getting a final grade. The basic premise of a P/F course is that the final grade doesn't matter as long as you pass the class.
  17. It says "Notification on January 31, 2014." I imagine that the emails or calls with be sent on that day at the latest, since the "National Screening Committee" is from November to the end of December. In any case, I imagine that is THE day they will go out.
  18. I'm not sure who Jody is; I received a generic (automated) email immediately after submitting the application.
  19. Now that we have a great deal of time left to wait, maybe it would be interesting for us to talk about our projects or goals. I'm applying for the ETA to Macedonia. During the time that I am not teaching, I'd like to be able to increase my ability to speak and understand the language, to learn about the educational system for a comparative study, and to come to terms with the construction of a Macedonian identity through literature. Given that the ETA doesn't require an actual project with a budget, I wanted to cover all of the possibilities in my SOP. (I'm a Secondary English Education major with concentrations in Linguistics and African American literature.) How about the rest of you? Which program are you applying for? To which country? What is your project? Any long-term goals?
  20. I'm not sure about that. I applied through my university, received no notification from them about the application, and still have this listed on my actual application: You submitted this application to Fulbright on 10/4/2013 6:13:00 PM. You can still work on any remaining parts of your application, but the application form itself is no longer available for editing.
  21. I applied through my university, but they didn't tell me about an institution-determined deadline. I submitted it online about a week ago though.
  22. I think what the previous poster is saying is that you should just be careful about how steadfastly you believe what has been said to you. The circumstances for each year's applicants are different. What may not have mattered in the past may be considered as the deciding factor between otherwise excellent candidates. You should still spend some time on the quantitative section, because your score was awfully low and many of the practice tests were not, in my experience, indicative of the "real thing."
  23. I second that. I also submitted my statements in PDF form; it's much easier to control how they are formatted and subsequently seen by the examiners.
  24. Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to participate in the update; however, it does look like it would be of extreme value to the other applicants. Can you speak with them in person (gently) to stress the time sensitivity of the letters?
