  1. I registered for my classes back in April, and I recently bought my books (they were listed on the bookstore's page). I don't have any of the syllabi though. In order to combat the feeling of being unprepared, I familiarized myself with the textbooks and have been reading articles from my field.
  2. Anybody else heading to Tulane? Big school, but apparently not well-represented on the forum.
  3. I'm not sure what the specific official documents are that you have, but you typically only need to hang onto your tax forms (based on the list you provided). You don't need to save receipts or bills unless you need to provide verification for your address. I recently trashed a massive pile of documents -- much like the ones you're describing -- for this very reason. I'm down to insurance cards, identification (license, passport, SS card), and my forms from filing taxes for the last five years.
  4. It depends on how long you've been in this relationship and how serious you are about one another. Taking the London route doesn't secure the relationship; it just means that you're in closer proximity.
  5. I'm sure you'll do well on your TOEFL. Nevertheless, feel free to PM me with your SOP if you'd like some feedback from me (native speaker, certified English teacher, starting Ph.D in Linguistics this fall). Good luck!
  6. What's preventing you from taking a look at the other books in the coming weeks before beginning?
  7. Now that I've put together a polished CV, I've been thinking about professional memberships. Which organizations/societies do you belong to? I know there's no "magic number" for the ideal amount, but I'm wondering what you've all seen for graduate students in your experience. Thanks!
  8. I was accepted into a Ph.D. program for fall, and I have barely anything on my Academia page. I do know, however, that the search committees looked at my LinkedIn account. Do you also have a profile on there?
  9. Hi! I'll be there for the Ph.D. Linguistics program, and I'll be staying in Deming. What about you? Feel free to PM me. :-)
  10. I went back to the office job I left in January when I began student teaching. I'm going to be here until early to mid-August, at which point I'll be moving for graduate school. Apart from that, I'm trying to get rid of a lot of unnecessary items (moving 1200 miles away makes you reconsider what you need/want) and get ahead on some reading in my field.
  11. Thanks! I actually accepted the admissions offer to Tulane for their Ph.D. Linguistics program; however, I was hoping to have been able to have my cake and eat it too. Nevertheless, the final notification about the Fulbright was extremely late by comparison. Good luck!
  12. Is Macedonia seriously the only country still waiting?
  13. Many of my (undergraduate) professors have told me that I will need to annotate my textbooks in graduate school in order to keep all of the information "straight," but I've never been able to bring myself to write inside a book -- due to legitimate OCD (viz. running out of ink in the pen and having to use a different color is a real concern). Anyone else similar in this regard?
  14. I called about Macedonia today. They still have no idea when notifications will go out. I already know what I'm doing in the fall, but it would be nice to have some closure...
  15. Hi everyone! I was wondering if any of our seasoned graduate students in linguistics had suggestions or advice about what to do during the summer before beginning a Ph.D. program. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :-) For the record, I'll be heading to Tulane for their Ph.D. Linguistics program.
  16. Yes, calling would be the best option. I had to call about decisions for Macedonia, and they told me that final decisions haven't been made yet.
  17. I can't afford to become "problematically lazy." I'm in my clinical experience right now, so I am responsible for teaching English/Language Arts to 140 students.
  18. I cannot believe that I'm still waiting to hear about the ETA to Macedonia. Is anyone else still waiting?
  19. I haven't heard from Macedonia either.
  20. I did let Tulane know that I was awaiting a decision about the Fulbright, but they didn't know for sure if I'd be able to defer. In fact, they are still trying to find out if it would be permissible, viz. given the small cohort size.
  21. Seeing as I have not heard anything about the Fulbright, I made the decision last night to accept the admissions offer from Tulane. Was anyone else forced to make this decision?
  22. I used Tyrannosaurus Prep when I took it.
  23. Still haven't heard anything about the Fulbright and need to decide relatively soon about the graduate schools I was admitted to. Anyone else in the same boat?
  24. Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone could provide some additional information about the New Orleans area in general and surrounding Tulane University. I noticed that there was already a thread but it hasn't been updated regularly. I'm looking mostly for information about the cost of life, housing, and parking. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
