  1. Although I applied to the Ph.D. Linguistics program at Tulane, half of the faculty members are shared with different departments, including Anthro. I received an admission offer on Friday, so hopefully you will all hear pretty soon. Good luck!
  2. Just received an admission offer from Tulane University for their Ph.D. Linguistics program!
  3. The spreadsheet should give you an idea of when people received their final notification for each of the previous years.
  4. Think about how you define the role of educator and student, your beliefs on the dynamic of learning, and your procedures for teaching in general. For example, do you aim to differentiate learning in a certain way?
  5. 11.16 here. Average GRE, excellent GPA.
  6. Before you make a decision either way, see the quote below. No need to worry about it until you know whether you have to make a choice.
  7. Yikes, I forgot to check back in! I had a phone interview with UVA on Monday. While she stated that it was not an "official interview," any contact with a prospective graduate school is certainly worthwhile. It went pretty well; however, I was interviewed mainly to clarify some of my limited background in linguistics. My school has neither a department nor a program in linguistics, and I'm an English Education major. In case you have any upcoming interviews, good luck and stay calm!
  8. I received my notification today that I was recommended for the ETA to Macedonia. Good luck to everyone as we continue down this path!
  9. I wish I could up-vote this a million times...
  10. I'm not sure if it will help anyone, but I have a phone interview tonight with UVA. I'll drop back in and modify my post with a general synopsis. Good luck, everyone!
  11. Yikes! I didn't check this thread until a few minutes ago, and there were THREE PAGES of new posts. Who let the crazies in?
  12. It all depends on what your ultimate goals are. I was always told that the Ph.D. is typical for positions in research and academia, which normally go hand-in-hand. If you cannot see yourself teaching down the road, then it might not be worthwhile to do the doctoral degree. On the other hand, the MA/MS could help you decide if research is really what you see yourself doing. If you have an interest in Swiss German dialects, it makes more sense to do it in an area where you have direct access to it. I may have read your post too quickly, but what is your actual major? How much research experience do you have?
  13. You probably won't hear anything from the programs until February/March. That's what all of my programs have told me, one of which is also in the California system. Good luck!
  14. I had the same thought. If experiential knowledge dictates that the notification normally arrives prior to the 31st, it might still be worth consideration though.
  15. I'm at work right now and cannot call, but this is probably the most likely individual: General Inquiries and FPAs Walter Jackson, Program Manager 212-984-5327, wjackson@iie.org Others can be found here.
  16. As far as I know, you shouldn't be "disqualified" for having experience in education. I will be graduating from my education program (7-12 English/Language Arts) in May, and I applied for an ETA to Macedonia. Good luck!
  17. Your verbal score is pretty low. If you think you can improve enough without compromising your quantitative score, it might be worthwhile to consider retaking it. Everything else looks great!
  18. That is correct for 2013. It says at the top that it's listed as Applicants / Recipients.
  19. I always found it interesting that service-based professions are consistently placed at the bottom of everything, e.g. IQ, GRE scores, GPA, etc. Yet, aren't teachers the ones educating all of the future doctors, astrophysicists, and mathematicians? Considering my major straddles the fields of "Education" and "English," I guess I cannot accurately gauge my IQ from these websites. Additionally, this is further complicated by my interest in and study of linguistics. cautiously_optimistic has it right.
  20. I'll be so busy preparing for student teaching, that I probably won't even remember!
  21. I haven't told anyone, because that's all it is: an application. It doesn't make sense to try to use it to your advantage at this point -- unless, for whatever reason, you've already heard positive feedback from them.
  22. Probably one for graduate admissions and one for the department.
  23. I'm not sure which educational level you are at right now, so this may or may not help you at all. I'm an undergraduate senior and have presented at quite a few conferences, I've listed the three most significant on my CV -- one local, one regional, and one regional/national. The third was represented mostly by schools in the region, but it was open to the nation. It was held in Oklahoma; however, many of us were from other states. For example, two of us were from the Midatlantic/Northeast. In any case, it was open to both undergraduate and graduate students with papers in linguistics. It's difficult to generalize my experiences with all of these conferences. Sometimes there's good food, and sometimes there isn't. Sometimes the other presenters are academic snobs, and sometimes they aren't. For example, I went outside for a walk at one conference to avoid the snobbery. On the other hand, I met a wonderful Cameroonian lady and a Nigerian man at ACAL a few years ago; we spent the day hanging out and talking about linguistics. If you're not comfortable talking in front of a group of people, you might want to start with that first. It's easier if you know what you want to discuss and have reflected it appropriately in your slides. Do not read directly off the presentation, and make sure to follow those old rules, e.g. limit each slide to three or four bulleted points. But, above all, make sure you go to these conferences without a chip on your shoulder. This also includes not undermining other presenters by nitpicking little mistakes.
  24. Not yet. The application deadlines haven't even passed at some schools yet.
