  1. Just lo let you guys know, there is a free version of SAS, SAS studio, that works also on the iPad. I don't work for SAS, I just really like SAS studio.
  2. Yes, get the extra outfit. Yes, be mindful of what's "appropriate". But then, if you want to wear yoga pants and UGGs, go for it. Just be productive though; if you look lazy you can't be lazy.
  3. I would go to Paris and then take the train to go to London. It is really manageable.
  4. I think you need to : -focus less on the negative -focus more on the process If you volunteer as RA, well, first of all you can put it on your CV, talk about it on your SOP, and just live the experience and see how you like it. Then if you don't apply or you don't get in this cycle, you can keep working as RA, gain more experience and maybe present a poster or attend a conference. This is a general useful resource: http://psychology.barnard.edu/sites/default/files/inline/gradstudyhandout.pdf Don't be scared! Most people apply more than once. It is a number game, and largely imponderable.
  5. Thank you GeoDUDE! This is super helpful.
  6. Since they are both unfunded masters and one is your top choice I would say go for it, but see what other people say. Good luck!
  7. You are more than OK, but keep working on the application! There are tons of qualified applicants and 99% of them don't have publications, but they have very good SOPs, LORs etc.
  8. Academia can be great, but it can also be a very tough place to be so it's better you try to catch up with the "academia related-knowledge". I know that's what you are doing now. Just a word of advice.
  9. It is not too much a matter of "state" Vs "private" school, but a matter of which tier the school belongs to. Make sure to study the stats of the school you are applying to.
  10. Definitely you can get into a top program without a publication, don't worry about that.
  11. I think that your profile is quite strong. Do you have good LORs? It all depends on what you will do this year to strengthen your application. Even if you decide to wait I would definitely try one or two places to get a feel for the process.
  12. Actually there are other reasons. I realized that using the Kindle and the IPad I was experiencing a loss of focus when reading newspapers and books - I was feeling kind of restless and could not focus on an article or a chapter, I felt I had to 'jump' to the next one! So I felt I had lost that sense of calm that reading used to give me. That's why I have stopped using them, and I tend to stay away from touch-screen devices for the same reason. Just a personal preference, I am sure that many people do not experience that.
  13. Gre verbal score does not matter too much. I would wait till the end of August/early September to contact professors, but you can start working on a general draft for your SOP. Have a look at Bolger's research at Columbia, he studies close relationships.
  14. I think that in the long term paper is better. I had a Kindle and then an IPad, and I don't use them anymore. For a novel a Kindle would be OK, but for real work I need paper (and a pencil).
  15. I think that"s a good decision. I can suggest you a couple of resources to review (I am kind of passionate about stats). This is a great book, and very readable: "Stats, Data and Models" by De Veaux, Velleman and Bock. After you have gone through it (or another intro stats book) I suggest: "Applied Linear Regression Models" by Kutner, Nachtsheim and Neter. Here you can just read the first four chapters about regression with one predictor variable. Hope this helps!
  16. Don't worry! Theory and methods are not that hard. Again I think stats is really important, in particular if you want to go for a Phd. How about getting a tutor for the summer to review the intro stats material, or auditing a course? Honestly I think that it's much better to get a B in an advanced stats course than an A+ in Family and no stats at all. I read this on an university website once and I think it is true.
  17. If you know Python, you can find programs online to do that.
  18. Definitely if possible consult a therapist, it's worth it in the long term. Sometimes it takes a bit to fins the right one, but don't give up. In the meanwhile there are excellent self-help resources like workbooks etc. that apply CBT principles. Anxiety is very treatable.
  19. I would definitely go for the stats course. It's going to start in September, right? Review some stats before starting, but don't worry too much, it is not as bas as it seems. In particular, review the last chapters of whatever your intro stats book was: regression, analysis of variance, multiple regression. It is worth it. It is better to tackle stats as soon as you can. Good luck!
  20. You can also try Discovering Statistics using R by Andy Field. Springer has tons of books on R and you might be able to access many of them for free if you have a university account: http://link.springer.com
  21. Definitely some phone interviews are going to be around that time.
  22. When you write about "getting a Phd in three years", be careful that in the US it is not easy to transfer credits from a master to a phd program. If you get into the NSSR phd program then you can complete it into three years, but it is not going to be that easy with a different Phd program in the US. That said, if you think there is a better research fit at the NSSR and you can afford it go for it.
  23. I would say, go to the place where you think you'll be happier.
  24. Thanks! The part about the personal statement is great.
