  1. I don't think it is too late, but it depends on the program. It is customary for Psychology, were you are accepted into a specific lab, but less so for the humanities. I suggest you post or make a search on your specific program forum.
  2. Yes, I did the same as shadowclaw. I tried to send POIs brief and simple emails with all the information they needed. I added, usually in parenthesis "I attach my CV for your reference". It takes just a click to open it.
  3. I guess about 5 days, so consider 10/14 days total.
  4. For what concerns the GRE, yes, the very last day is about two weeks before the deadline, but give yourself a little margin, it is a good habit I think. For what concerns your chances, your GPA is a little low for those top schools, but it could still be OK depending on the rest of your application. What matters I think is which classes are bringing the GPA down. Anyway I suggest you also apply to other schools or go for a Master first. Good luck!
  5. Facebook, iPhones, iPads, iPods etc...
  6. I would also email again or call - sometimes it takes some time to get an answer form them.
  7. To install SAS (by the way I love SAS) on a Mac is a bit of a headache; all the other programs run fine.
  8. Actually for a master program or MSW program I don't think there is the same urgency to contact advisors; follow ashieppo72's advice.
  9. Yes it would - as long as she is on the tenure track (which I assume she is).
  10. I think your GPA/GRE put you above the cutoff without problems; the admissions depends on the rest of your application. By the way I have similar stats; I sent my CV to professors while inquiring about grad school at Harvard, Yale etc. and they all encouraged me to apply. As I said, then getting in is a different matter.
  11. I would say the first one, because a score in the high sixties looks good.
  12. Hi everybody, I am an international student slowly writing her statement! English is not my first language, so I work with advisors at the writing center of my university. We work mostly on content and flow. My advisor suggest I contact a proofreading service to make sure everything is perfect. She said just proofreading should not be too expensive, about $25 an hour. I guess though that most services charge bypager. Anyway, can anybody recommend a good proofreading service?
  13. I would go for the two editors and the professor. It is important to have at least one academic reference. Good luck!
  14. Yes, don't worry about the GRE. focus on improving your application.
  15. I am not in a Phd, but I think that the level of the Probability and Inference courses in a Phd program is much higher than the level of the courses in an undergraduate program. That's what you need RA for. I think you should try to contact professor or grad students at the institutions you are interested in and ask them.
  16. I agree, if one can afford it, always better to apply. You might get in, and, in case you don't get in, it is a big advantage for next year.
  17. From what you wrote I think that you should take Advanced Calculus. Inference is conceptually easy (much easier than probability IMHO), and you could look at it by yourself or take an online/summer class.
  18. I am sure you did. I did not know that you had another recommender with a Phd.
  19. Sorry, I don't have an answer to your specific question, but I think that if you get into a Phd stats program, it is assumed that you know calculus and Linear Algebra and you are not going to take them again.
  20. Have you taken (or planning to take) Real Analysis?
  21. What are your target schools?
  22. have you read "The Phd grind"? It is a great, realistic account of a phd experience in CS (and how to make the best of it): http://www.pgbovine.net/PhD-memoir/pguo-PhD-grind.pdf
  23. By direct experience I can tell you that you definitely have a chance. Don't worry! Keep polishing your application.
  24. Well, you could do it even as a full-time students in a traditional program (a friend of mine is doing it, but of course I understand it is not easy).
