    haha. quite hilarious.

to the OP: if it was only verbal, you're fine. sure it might look bad from the employer's perspective, but if it's not what you want to do, then the hell with it. if you think that by working that job, and re-applying a couple years later will make you a better candidate, and can get into good programs, then think about it. perhaps even take the job offer. but if you aren't sure that doing the job will do you any better, then don't do it. opportunities to attend grad schools come by very rarely, and you are a very lucky and smart person. so, utilize it. once you finish your degree, perhaps you will get chances of crossing better bridges.
and like everyone else around here, this is just my opinion. go with your guts.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, they say. A funded offer at a top 20 school is a pretty good offer and ultimately, you will be judged by the quality of your research not by the school you went to (or at least I like to think so), so I'd definitely suggest you go with the offers you have now, rather than wait out a year for a top 10 offer that may or may not come.

It's definitely a good idea to reply and say thanks and to confirm that you're interested in the program and in finding out more about the program and research taking place there, even if this program is not your top choice. Hopefully you'd get the opportunity to talk with some of the profs there, if not in person, then on the phone, and the conversations can help you to make your choice on where to go even if you decide to go somewhere else.

eklavya reacted to HatedByTheRegulars in What to wear for admitted student visits?
When I visit the institutions I was accepted to, I plan on wearing their school colors. I think doing this will show a great amount of respect, reverence, and admiration for (1) the faculty, and (2) the institution. I have purchased lapel pins from the schools I was accepted to (I bought these online), and I plan on incorporating them into the ensembles I've selected to wear...I am an early 20s male. I plan on wearing (1) blazer, (2) slacks, (3) button down shirt, (4) tie. I like this topic.... :-)

For "less formal events," I plan on wearing a (1) polo shirt (in one of the institutional colors), (2) slacks.

First, you're either ignorant or arrogant to call Michigan a second (or third)-tier school, especially coming from someone who got owned by Arizona State and community college. Michigan is a top program, public or private and you should be proud that you graduated from there.

Yes, there is use trying to distinguish between these three objectively. The current research areas faculty at each of these places are doing could be worlds different; if your research interests don't match up, then collegiality and placement are the least of your worries- you're going to have a hell of a time (in the bad way). If that's the case you might as well be going to a third-rate regional school.

Unfortunately some programs are pretty bad at this. There was a thread on here last year where an applicant got his rejection for the Fall in August and he replied with an angry email. They're like that date that tells you they're gonna call you, but they don't. This is rare though, and you will most likely hear back from them (hopefully positive news). Good luck!

It is a huge deal in the anthropology/archeology field. If you have tattoos you are recommended to hide them. I have seen people at conferences with visible tattoos not get introduced to certain people by their adviser based on this. Its embarrassing for all parties if you have visible tattoos based on the unprofessional attitude it provides. Luckily I have no tattoos but a lot of my friends do, and they cover them up for every conference they attend. Also most of them will cover up their tattoos for school based on wanted to only portray the upmost professionalism they can. However, for department functions like bbq or christmas parties they don't cover their tattoos.

Im sorry if a lot of people don't like my previous post, but it is the truth. Reason why most people with the tattoos don't see it is because the academic field is full of two face people. They would never say something to the individual but professors behind their back talk plenty. I was privilege on a few conferences to be including in this. Professors ridicule other professors for allowing their students to be unprofessional like piercing, having tattoos, how they act, and/or how they dress. Mind you I have only been to the big very formal conferences but I figure everyone on here would have the goal of working for a big university if you went into academics. Also, I am sorry if you fell I'm cool since I have tattoos and no one will stop me for this. I know plenty of those people in previous programs and current programs. They never/don't knew/know what is said about them but if it came down to two people from the program applying, professors would write a very strong recommendation for the professional one and an average recommendation for the unprofessional one. Just be professional at conferences and don't embarrass professors. If you have sleeve tats so what wear a long sleeve at formal events. I know my friends who cover them up for class might be overkill but they dont want their tats affecting their lives in later life.

As for my lucky I don't have tats comment, I meant no disrespect. Why I said I felt lucky is because when I was 18 I almost got an ugly, non-coverable tat and to this day I dont know why I didn't get it but I am thanlful my 18 year old self made the decision not to get it. I know I would of hated it from the second I got it. So for me it was lucky, for others it is a personal decision and one that I know a lot of people think a lot about it before they get it. And I didn't mean to imply someone was unlucky if they have a tat. Just me I would of gotten it for the wrong reasons and thus I am lucky I didn't get it.

TOEFL isn't like a prescription drug or food items that have certain hard deadlines of expiration. Few months give or take on the two years of 'deadline' is going to be just fine. But it is always good to ask your department and/or the graduate admission office.

In your specific case edost, I think you'll be fine.

Can't believe we don't have a thread dedicated to Chuck Norris!! No wonder life is boring as hell during the waiting period! (Why? Cuz Chuck Norris ain't here to keep us company, y'all!!)

Anyhoo, the obvious question to ponder about, while I/we are stuck in this limbo, is, how would Chuck Norris go through the application and admission process?

    1. Chuck Norris doesn't fill out the application forms. He stares at them till they finish up and pay after themselves.
    2. Personal statement of Chuck Norris: "Me".
    3. Chuck Norris never accepts offers made by any schools because he is tired of being the only smart dawg on campus.
    5. If Chuck Norris doesn't get accepted, he simply calls up the admission office and says "No".
    6. Chuck Norris got rejected at all schools he applied to. But the adcomms haven't gathered the courage to break the news to him.
    7. While on a campus visit, the graduate student who was supposed to pick Chuck Norris up from the airport didn't show up. Enraged, Chuck Norris roundhouse kicked the whole city and dropped it far away in the ocean. People say that's how the Liliput came to be.
    8. There are no PoIs for Chuck Norris. There is only CNoI for the POIs.
    9. When asked what his career goals are, Chuck Norris answered "To be Chuck Norris".
    10. Chuck Norris didn't get into any Eco/Evo program because no professors was willing to buy the idea that the mass extinction of dinosaurs was due to chuck norrisaurus and no meteor.
    11. Chuck Norris was instantly hired by the math program because he could divide by zero.
    12. Chuck Norris doesn't wait during the whole application process. He goes back to the future and gets his degree.
    13. Chuck Norris was let go from the immunology program. Not because he caught the diseases, but because he crushed them with his bare hands after catching them.
    14. Chuck Norris once possessed satan. To investigate how, the religion program was created.
    15. When applying for physical fitness programs, Chuck Norris was asked how many push ups he could do. He answered "All of them".
    16. Chuck Norris was invited for recruiting weekend because, well, Chuck Norris needed to recruit workers.
    17. Chuck Norris was once called to the Dean's office because the Dean was in trouble.
    18. There is no 'Middle Name' form field in the applications given to Chuck Norris to fill out. Because the schools are smart enough to know that nothing should come between Chuck Norris.
    19. Chuck Norris doesn't contact PoIs. He pokes them in facebook.
    20. PoIs don't poke back Chuck Norris on facebook. Who in their right mind would finger Chuck Norris?

First, how much $ or euros are we talking here?
Also, try this - fly to Frankfurt first. I remember paying about 20 euros for this flight about 2 years ago. Then get tickets from big/cheap airlines that fly regularly from Frankfurt to the US. Few that come to my mind are Air India, Cathay Pacific, Delta, American Airlines and such. If flying directly to Minneapolis is expensive, choose other airports as your port of entry and then get another plane to take you to Minneapolis. Seattle, Denver, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Los Angeles, New York, etc all can be good options. I think I paid about 500$ to fly from Frankfurt to Denver in June (can't remember the airlines). Just keep looking.. you'll get a good deal.
