Thanksgiving means seeing your family...
TravelBug92 replied to aldoushuxley's topic in Waiting it Out
"The programs you're applying to are all a year long? And why are they so far away, you won't be able to come back for the holidays next year!" Maybe they don't think I considered that when I was looking at schools? Who knows... -
I'm not going to lie, I got super giddy after I hit that "submit" button! I also felt completely paranoid that I forgot to complete part of it! Shockingly I heard back from one of my schools within 3 days(!), and another one about a week later! Still waiting on two more, and find myself constantly checking my email! haha

Hi there! I've applied to Durham University (MSc Developmental Psychopathology), Swansea University (MSc Abnormal and Clinical Psychology), University of York (MSc Development, Disorders, and Clinical Practice), and University of Stirling (MSc Child Development) for next fall! I was so nervous about getting the applications in that mine were in by November 9th! I might have been/just be a biiit worried about getting accepted to schools abroad (hahaha) but I've heard back from two so far and both have been offers so I'm ecstatic! Waiting for the other two, however, not so much fun! All the programs I applied to are masters programs, so funding is going to be super fun there! But hey, I've been accepted!

Well at least for my area (Psychology), when I told people that I was considering Rutgers at the beginning of my search the typical response from people was "Wow! they have a really good Psych program!" I do have family that went to Rutgers and they rag on it too haha.
-
Best of luck! Right now just focus on what is right in front of you and before you know it, you'll be hearing from the schools!

That makes more sense then, finances when it comes to education are HUGE (unfortunately...). Did you ask if there was a way at Pitt to test out of stats or would that be a no-go? If you are really panicking, you can try contacting the admissions and OSU and ask when you might be able to expect to hear from them by. They might not respond, but if they do you'll be able to calm down a bit. I wouldn't panic just yet! It's only been a few weeks!

Is it different than central Scotland (Stirling)? When I was there I definitely needed clothing for multiple seasons (haha).

Is there a particular reason you NEED to get into Ohio State? You've already done better than a large number of people out there by getting into a graduate program (congrats!). It might not be a while until you hear from them, so just hang in there! I agree with Sigaba about the comment about not getting into a grad school, it is rude to them and maybe to the others who applied to the same program but didn't get in. I do somewhat understand where you're coming from, though. The schools I applied to said they give you an answer within 3-6 weeks and it's into the 4th week for two of them! Even though I got into my top choice I'm still freaking out about the other two!

Graduate student dating/relationship poll
TravelBug92 replied to RedPill's topic in Officially Grads
I might be a really weird case, but I'm currently in my last year as an undergrad, will be attending graduate school in the UK next year, and am engaged. There is no way on earth I would consider getting married before graduate school, I don't need the stress of planning a wedding during my senior year! My fiancé and I already discussed what we think would be best for us, and we agreed that we would get married after we finish our degrees, be it 3 or 7 years down the road. I also wouldn't even want to think about having a family now! The school I'll likely be going to has housing for families, but I'm assuming that those individual are older than 21/22 years old! In my opinion, as long as I'm not 40 when I finish grad school (and I hope to god it doesn't take that long!), I think having children can wait. -

A question about the UK system
TravelBug92 replied to moderatedbliss's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I feel like it varies by school. One of mine (Swansea) said that I have four weeks, but Durham gave me a specific date to respond by. It'll tell you on the offer letter when the response is needed. Best of luck! Steph -
Hello! Next fall I'll be attending a uni in the UK (likely Northern England) and will be there for at least a year straight, so I'll need enough space for clothing/shoes for all seasons. I'm currently looking for luggage sets that I might enjoy having, but my problem is I'm not sure what size would be good for a year. I studied abroad for a semester last year and took a fairly large suitcase (about 28 inches by 18 inches by 12 inches I think) and a carry-on sized, and both were completely packed - for just a quarter of the time I'll be there for my masters program. I was wondering if anyone had some input on what sized luggage/luggage sets would be conducive for my needs, because I am completely stumped! Steph

(after getting into first choice school) "I'm really anxious to hear from the other schools I applied to." "I applied to (insert multiple highly ranked schools in my field) but I have a snowball's chance in hell of getting in there." "I can't afford to go out this weekend, I have like $1000 worth of graduate school applications to pay for." (not me, but a friend applying to 13 programs)

What schools are you looking at for PhDs? Depending on the school, they may look at your MS GPA and consider that more than undergrad, but I'm not sure. If you haven't given the program you're interested in and particular schools too much thought yet, that is going to be something really need to look into, some application deadlines are approaching fast! It's also going to depend on GRE scores, experience, and LORs, so with the information you give here it's hard to say what your chances are whatsoever of being admitted to PhD programs anywhere.

I just found out that I got into Durham University for next year! I was wondering what I might be able to expect out of the city and the uni as well. I studied at the University of Stirling last year so I think I have some idea of what smaller cities are like (I could be completely off, but I can only work with what I've got, right?). Any tidbits about Durham as I begin hearing from other schools?

Honors in the UK vs US
TravelBug92 replied to ProTrans's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I absolutely agree with everyone on here, converting the GPA yourself is fairly pointless. What I did to see if my GPA was high enough was I contacted the pg admissions counsellors at the schools I am interested (unless it explicitly states on the program page what their US equivalent is), and they told me whether or not my GPA is at/above the minimum requirement, because there really is no logical way to convert the grades. From what I've been told by the counsellors, a 2:1 is typically around a 3.3/3.4 and a 1st is about a 3.7/3.8. I haven't seen any that say that the minimum is 2:2, but I'm guessing it's around a 3.0/3.1 GPA. Best of luck! -

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
TravelBug92 replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
"I'm sure you'll get in somewhere! You applied to the same amount of schools I did for undergrad and I got into them!" "Why aren't you looking at [insert high-ranked school, but in something I'm not looking in to]?" "You really like to have your ass kicked, don't you?" "Ha. Have fun with those loans!" Tell me something I don't know. -
I'm a Psychology student at a really small liberal arts school in New Hampshire (St. Anselm College), and I already know that I want to get a Masters at a school in the UK. I already know what schools I am applying to, and I am going through an organization called Across the Pond. I'll be applying to Stirling, York, Durham, Winchester, and Swansea. I am debating on applying to Edinburgh. I am applying to developmental psychology/ abnormal psychology type programs. I am wondering what my chances might be. I have a 3.55 GPA, and am in the top 25% of my school, and top 20% of my class, I'm a member of Psi Chi (the international honor society in Psychology) and Delta Epsilon Sigma (a Catholic university equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa). My school is known for it's rigorous academics which is why my GPA isn't very high, but my ranking is. I studied abroad in Stirling last spring (which ignited my desire to study abroad for graduate school) and I am wondering if that might increase my chances there. I'm not sure what other information you all might need, but if you can, please help me figure out my chances of getting in! Thanks! Steph
